Interesting. Bet that gets a number of adverse comments from a certain section!
Must admit I am not sure there is a value for money benefit in this. Seems a strange choice.

That's going to kick up a big stink. Council funds being used to help Wasps.

Indeed as the judo is only for a couple of days.  I thought it would be better spent on setting up things like sporting clubs and try to get youths off the streets.

As a tax payer Iím not too pleased.  I donít see how this will benefit the city or our club. Will this increase the value of the Rioch, again probably note.

Will we get more people through the door, probably not.  Does this  show how bad our finances are ?????

Funds are from government, not council funds. Not really sure why it needs it to be fair.

Government decides where they're spent or council?

If it's anything like down here then it's the development board that decides which projects get the go ahead.  We have had an eclectic mix announced down here.  I gather from what our local paper has published, that infrastructure projects that are quick, 'big and / or noticeable' and 'ready to go' are prioritised over anything else. Need and usefulness seem to be well down the list.

Directly supporting the commonwealth games, I see no issue with it, its Coventry's premier venue.

That's an impressive way of enclosing, what is effectively, the back door.

Looks impressive and should show the arena and Coventry in a decent light.

If you look at Bobby Bridges' reports on Twitter, yes it has!

I must admit, I find it a bit unfair on Wasps to be receiving flak because it's for the Commonwealth games - it's not like the council has just handed a free £5m to Wasps.

Ah but don't let facts get in the way of a good bit of vitriol.

I think people are misintepreting the funding. Its not Cov council tax money funding Wasps. Its govt money that councils (or a temp development board) have been allocated to get medium size construction projects up and running almost immediately to help boost local economies around the country.

There is a community aspect to the Ricoh Arena as it attracts non-rugby related commerce from outside the area.

I wouldn't be at all surprised  if CCC had in some way given some assurances in developing the Arena to secure Commonwealth Games events.

But let's not pretend that hosting the Commonwealth Games at the Ricoh would be some sort of benevolent gesture by Wasps for the benefit of all of Coventry.  It will be a massive commercial boost for Wasps as well as for the city as a whole.

I doubt Wasps made a bid to host events.. it was probably CCC who enquired first, then ran it by Wasps. It seems sensible to then upgrade the facilities being used for the events taking place.

The outside of the atrium is probably being redeveloped to process bar coded tickets or cards before entry to the main building (i.e. before the steps up)..

Its not like Wasps are getting a new pitch, seating, and a new motif nailed onto the west stand.

Ticket sales proceeds will presumably go to the organising body and then any scraps fed back to Wasps to cover overheads.

Wasps will hope to make money by selling space outside the stadium to food vendors etc.

I'm not sure I'd be interested in watching Judo but perhaps wrestling..
