For me this puts Shields in real doubt for the RWC. A real shame for him. From Wasps point of view it could mean we have him rested and ready for the start of the season.

I would have thought it severely hurts his chances. I think he would have had difficulty securing a slot anyway- certainly not a 100% certainty pick. His flexibility would be an asset to England in a squad, though. Not entirely sure of his place in our pecking order either when all are fit.
