Problem is we looked fine with Rowlands and Matthews. We know Launchbury and Gaskell are quality. So we need a short term fix, not really a long term one. Also, if we go and get a replacement now what was the point of signing Vukasinovic.

Watching Vuka in the A game, he simply hasn't got the bulk or strength needed.

Looks like Cardall and Vukasinovic plus Shields (if fit) or short term cover. I watch the whole A team game against Wanderers. Cardall did well with his chargedown try and worked his socks off. Vukasinovic showed strength in defence under the posts winning a crucial turnover. He also had a try disallowed for foot in touch. At 112kg he still looks fast and athletic. With injury blight we do need cover for short and long term and also keep developing our younster for the future.

Not going to be an option this season but we are in desperate need of someone from the big gnarly Saffa mould to compliment Joe.

Totally agree Heathen!  Simmonds seems to be performing well for Quins - much better then when he was with us MHO.

He was quite good for us, just injury prone. He's spent a huge amount of time injured for Quins too i believe.

I'd like to think that Launch's injury wasn't too serious and he'll be back out on the pitch before the month is out.

Without wishing to hijack the thread too much, I think our recruitment will be more focused  on specific quality rather than quantity. The reason for this statement is that Dai was quoted in an interview in the summer stating that very few contracts were up this coming summer so the general squad turnover would be a lot less... in the region of 5 players only.

I have no idea if we're spending up to the cap or up to a set budget, so not going to make assumptions on that. Therefore, working to those same parameters, I'm guessing its dependant on what contracts are up and the amount of wages it will free up.

Not seen anything of Vukasinovic so can't pass judgement on whether he'll make a long term impact on the squad or be a one season player from the championship. So I guess (keeping it focused on SR as per the thread), its a question of do we feel Launch, Gaskell and Rowlands are a big enough core to allow Cardell & Flament time to develop (not forgetting Matthews of course, but view him as a fringe player)? Do we think bringing in a Nakarawa calibre player would help compliment and drive the core without hindering Flament & Cardell?

I feel such a player is required. Launchbury is likely to be away with England at points. factoring injuries and rotation... a top quality SR would compliment rather than hinder IMHO. I would love for us to target Nick Isiekwe… players a mobile style that suits what we're trying to get back to and has some serious size to him.

I don't rate Isiekwe as much, outside of the Sarries structure i don't he'd be any better than alot of players, plus I couldnt watch that vomit inducing celebration every time we won a knock on.
I only count Gaskell as a fringe player myself due to him only being available for half a season at best. Nakawara would be a perfect fit only because he has attributes that not many players have and could drive development in those around him...
I don't believe it will happen, I think we'll try to push through our current crisis.

I agree we will try and ride storm with our second-row options. Nakawara has been in talks with Sale, confirmed by Diamond, if we enter the race then it will be a lottery and a premium will be attached to what he wants to earn as he has something on the table. I am sure he would be a good acquisition but Sale are ahead of us in dialogue.
It was fine when I left it.....

We definitely need to sign a quality 2nd rower, Launchbury is class, I like Gaskell but he is injured too much. Rowlands is ok but he is 28 now so unlikely to improve. Happy for him to be a squad player.

Cardell is only 22, so he could really step up but can we wait 2/3 seasons. I do think a quality lock will change a lot for us, improve our scrum, line out and add the psychical aspect to our much needed game

We have 7 locks on our books. We will not recruit another with a long term contract. A short term contract would still take time to setup, by which time some of the walking wounded will be back. European games would be an issue as we have to give notice of injury cover, and we wouldn't be in time. So the next two games we have what we have. Joe should be back by the week after.

Don't panic Mr Mannering. Because there is nothing Wasps can do. It is what it is.

Fair point Hymenoptera, perhaps Sarries players are a risk of once outside of their domination structure, they could perform quite differently.

I agree Nelly, I don't see any short term signings coming in unless the injuries get even worse! I'm thinking more about next season as we're about to reach the 'window'.

We have a big crop of youngsters recently graduated, a high number of 'squad players' so would like to see us target a handful of truly top class players. SR being one.

There is talk of Tigers having a huge number of player contracts up for renewal.... I think we can count ourselves lucky not to be facing that scenario! Lets utilise this unfamiliar situation where the number of departures will be minimal and can really focus the recruitment in key areas.

Agreed. I think we'll make do and mend for the next two weeks which pretty much looks like Vukasinovic and Cardall with some poor soul on the bench hoping not to come in out of position. After that we may have Shields and Launchbury ready. Not sure how long Rowlands and Matthews are out for.

I can't see Tibo having a bad concussion as he completed the game. The statement at the end of last week was a little ambiguous. Expect him and Cardell at the least. Edinburgh has monsters anyway so good fun for whoever.

But we enjoy a good panic NWW:
- new DOR or assistant
- what’s up with Dan Robson
- is Sopoaga coming or going
- we need better wingers
- the referees are against us
- all our second rows are injured
And as for this web site!!

Dai putting Ben Morris up as a possibility for second row, played there before for Nottingham apparently.
