Team of the decade.
« on: December 30, 2019, 02:23:21 PM »
Just seen that as we move towards the 20's Rugby Pass has put together a Wasps starting 15 of the decade. Agree with some of their picks but mine would be;
Mullan
Taylor
Brookes

Launchbury
Wentzel

Willis
Carr
Smith

Robson
Gopperth

Flutey (bit of a stretch)
Beale

Varndell
Piatau
Wade

Some difficult leave outs such as Jones, Betsen, Daly, Shaw, Simpson, Cipriani, Smith, Le Roux and Cittadini.

Coincidentally, Bobby Bridge has published the results of the Best Wasps XV of Ricoh Arena era (2014-19) poll as chosen by us.

Bobby Bridge solves the 12 and Gopperth conundrum by playing Cips at 10 and Jimmy at 12.
Hard to argue with that given that we were at our most lethal with that lineup

If I'm picking individuals in each position, I'd find it hard to pick Wentzel at lock ahead of Shaw.
However, if I'm picking a genuine team and require a partner for Launchbury, then Wentzel is an awesome shout.
I still remember how we went from worst lineout in the league to the best, literally overnight.... solely due to Marco Wentzel.
Love that man

I'm a bit baffled that he's put Beale on the wing? Fullback or centre yes, but wing? Surely he should swap Piatau and Beale?

Wentzel is an unsung hero of our worst period. An immense player.
Let me tell you something cucumber

Just my opinion, these things are a bit of fun. Thinking about them at their best rather than on average.

Mullan
Ash (any throwing issues sorted by including Wentzel I hope. I just can't leave him out). This was hard
Brookes- this was hard, too

Launch
Wentzel  - so much choice..

Willis
Young
Hughes (I know, but for two years prior to selection for England he was awesome). Again, so, so much choice.

Robson
Cipriani

Wade
Jimmy
Daly (with a heavy heart)
Varndell
Beale

Seriously hard at fifteen. So many choices in the back three. Only Wade is unarguable for me in that lot.
Seriously hard for me to not include Shaw, Smith or Betsen...

Still all a bit of fun.

Would have to go with Simpson at 9 in team of the decade as he was there throughout (all but the final few months) and played his best rugby for most of those years, only really falling behind Robson in the last couple of seasons.

Agree with Wentzel comments above. Impossible to leave him out.

Agree about Wentzel. Didnt he even play injured in the game against falcons in final game of season. Or around that time.

It's a really tricky call

I'd struggle leave Fester and Masi out, they were both immense when we needed it more than ever.

And technically Lewsey played in 2011, so that complicates things...

Yes he played that match against his consultant's advice and without insurance. For that level of commitment alone I consider him an all-time great.

Without out disagreeing how pivotal for Wasps he was, does Wetzel creep into the last decade?

Its a hard call in so many positions

Looking back to the 2010/11 squad (say) I'd be wanting to think about Tom Rees, Joe W, Sam Jones, Dom W, Hugo S and Tim Payne

But so long as Chris and Tom are the wingers.....I'm fairly easy!
