Why do they do it?
« on: February 01, 2020, 06:05:42 PM »
If you place the ball on the ground gripping it in two hands, you will reliably score a try.

I nearly had a coronary when Robson put the ball down with one hand last week, successfully as it happens.

Hogg dropped the ball today playing as captain for his country.

If I was the coach, I would fine the player a months wages for ballsing it up when over the try line.

[Yes I do want Scotland to win]

Schoolboy error, could be the difference in Scotland winning or losing today but the turnovers Ireland keep winning is more like to be the deciding factor in this game.

Schoolboy perhaps, but why are professionals, Internationals, doing it? Willie did it a couple of seasons ago.

What is going through the head?

Unless your hand is capable of gripping more than half the circumference of the ball, you are not in control. That is physics.

Yes, intensely frustrating. Why not just slide in? Two poor teams on show. Ireland just generally and the Scots good but error strewn. Hogg will kick himself as the Scots should have won.

Didn't Freddie Burns do the same for Bath?

They simply don't want to bruise their precious bodies going down, and can't be @rsed with the effort it takes to get back up?

Forwards simply fall over the line and say, 'Meh, whatever.'

Worse, he was celebrating before putting the ball down and was caught by a defender

Is this not just human nature though?
Some kind of built in need to make things look easy / casual.

We all do so many things in life that either feel more comfortable, or more natural, rather than necessarily what's best / safest.

It's not just rugby players that make fundamental mistakes like this. The same occurs in every sport.
Golfers have made air shots when trying to tap in a ball that's hanging over the hole
Snooker players have missed the simplest of pots by not giving the pot the same level of concentration as every other shot.
Darts players miss the big number segment when they're focusing too much on their next throw
Footballers have made huge mistakes when thinking a pass back to the goal keeper couldn't possibly go wrong

All these things are virtually impossible to do wrong if the same level of control or concentration is used for everything, but it's human nature not to do that.
When something seems so simple to complete we naturally give it less focus and that will cause a problem 1 in a 1000 times.... Unfortunately for hogg it was in a very important game
