I was under the impression that when live sport was cancelled at the end of the year, BT were within their rights to recall a percentage of the money for last season.
They ultimately decided to allow the clubs to keep the money.
That was at a time when we didn't really know when any live sport was likely to return
So, I agree with hymenoptera that BT definitely seemed to play the role of the good guys.
It may be that they knew, or agreed a deal off the back of it, to allow them to show everything if sport was played behind closed doors.
However, the public message was (I think) that the clubs could keep all the TV money even when there wasn't any televised matches
