This worries me with Alfie

He seemed to have a number of injuries at the end of last year.
2 hamstring injuries and something else (quad?)

Is it a case of a young man's body being pushed too hard?

Cricket limits the number of overs bowled according to the age of the athlete, building up to a peak at 24. This allows the bone density of the neural arch [lumbar spine] to achieve the optimal strength with reduced risk of stress fractures which take a long time to heal and can recur.

There is probably a similar process occurring with ligaments/tendons i.e. a reaction to stress. The cumulative effect of training/sequential games, the specific stresses of the sport, the physique of the player [and the use of steroids] may all predispose to structural failure.

But the other side of this is that anyone can turn their ankle.

I think of Manu Tuilagi who had numerous seemingly unrelated injuries.
Eventually, it starts to seem too coincidental

Hopefully this was just one of those things that could happen to anyone at any time

Back row injuries (Vialanu, Shields, T Willis, Oghre ) and international call ups (J Willis, Lauch, Rowlands) have also meant he has probably had too play more than ideal as well.
I have included second row call ups as the likes of gaskell and cardall might have been able to provide back row cover too, similar to Oghre as an injury who could cover back row.

Also as previously mentioned he is not long out of age grade rugby where there are seasonal restrictions into full time professional training/ playing.

Alfieā€™s injury will allow Tom Willis to get another run of games.

His enforced rest will have done him some good and I expect him to come back a better player.

As well as possibly overplaying him we've got to be careful about over using him when he does play. Most set plays involved him carrying to contact yesterday and that's on top of him doing it in the loose. Players like him can be just as valuable as decoys. That said he strikes me as someone who is difficult to keep out of the game!

Lee did mention on Sunday that Alfie was due a rest after all the game time recently and that may now come sooner rather than later.

Re Alfie. Do Wasps and indeed Alfie still see his priority as being hooker in the future? He's been as/more effective than some very good backrow operators and learned Number 8 play really quickly so I wonder if he'd be better off (perhaps) as a 6 longer term? Also it's not like he's likely to get hooker time for us in the near future given our resources there.

Could be the next Smashley, especially if he grows his hair out
