BBC Prem League Table - am I going mad?
« on: February 16, 2021, 08:48:39 PM »
I was idly looking at the league table on the BBC website and something didn't look right with the points.  Down to sale it looks OK but after that its a bit weird. I assume (hope for the sake of my sanity) its Covid related:

Quins W5 (20) D1 (2) BP4 = 26 but shows 28.
Saints W5 (20) D0      BP4 = 24 but shows 26
Wasps W5 (20) D0      BP4 = 24 and shows 24

And this one really is puzzling

Newcastle W5 (20) D0 BP2 =22 but shows 23!

The rest don't make sense either.

If its Covid points shouldn't the "win" show up in the win column which it appears to do, and the "losing" 2 points in the BP column?

But where does the Falcon's odd point come from?

Yours,

Puzzled of North Dorset

PS And I 've only had 1 glass of wine

GP table is the same but the 2 pts that get awarded for "losing" a Covid fixture skew the points.

BiND, you have every right to be confused with the Covid points allocation system. The overall points in the BBC & PR tables are correct but here are the issues:

In the case of Quins & Saints you omitted to include the 2 points ‘loss’ for Covid cancelled games (1 each) hence why you are two points off for each.

For Newcastle, you actually spotted an error in the BBC table as Newcastle only secured one BP (a LBP against Exeter) and not two as shown (PR table is correct). Also similar to the above you omitted to include the 2 points ‘loss’ for their Covid cancelled game against Saints last weekend.

I tried to show the full breakdown below:

W/D/L - denotes results from games played
CW/CL - denotes Covid ‘win’ or ‘loss’

Harlequins: W5 (20), D1 (2), L2, BP4 (4), CW0 (0), CL1 (2) = 28 points

Northampton: W3 (12), D0 (0), L3, BP4 (4), CW2 (8 ), CL1 (2) = 26 points

Newcastle: W4 (16), D0 (0), L3, BP1 (1), CW1 (4), CL1 (2) = 23 points

I hope that helps & solves the mystery/confusion.

I suggest you demand your TV license fee back from the BBC for that unacceptable error!  ;D

Thanks both.

I thought it was the Covid "losing" points, perhaps they should be shown in the BP column.

The Falcons error means I'm only half mad :)

I note that the BBC says they aren't responsible for any changes so I suppose that means no licence fee refund :(

There was also something odd on the Table that BT sport put up after the game on Sunday. It had 11 teams having played 9 games and one only 8, which couldn't have been correct?

It would have been a temporary error though.

One reason why I have a link to the table on the PRL site - would assume that is always correct. https://www.premiershiprugby.com/gallagher-premiership-rugby/league-table/.

It may well have been that PRL hadn't confirmed the points distribution for Newcastle v Northampton.
