Win/loss ratios with current Premiership Refs
« on: February 21, 2021, 03:22:14 PM »
I've been working out what our win/loss ratios are for each ref still in the top flight, going back to 2007/08.

It makes for interesting reading:

Ref   M   W   D   L   Win %   Lose %
Anthony Woodthorpe   1   1   0   0   100.00%   0.00%
Tom Foley   16   14   0   2   87.50%   12.50%
Karl Dickson   5   4   1   0   80.00%   0.00%
Ian Tempest   13   9   0   4   69.23%   30.77%
Craig Maxwell-Keys   18   12   0   6   66.67%   33.33%
Christophe Ridley   5   3   0   2   60.00%   40.00%
Luke Pearce   24   12   0   12   50.00%   50.00%
Wayne Barnes   25   12   0   13   48.00%   52.00%
Matthew Carley   16   7   0   9   43.75%   56.25%
Andrew Jackson   4   1   0   3   25.00%   75.00%
Hamish Smales   1   0   0   1   0.00%   100.00%
Adam Leal   1   0   0   1   0.00%   100.00%

Some of the "baddies" aren't so bad after all.

It’s  why I won’t have a word said against Karl Dickson.

I thought we have had Hamish a couple of times, or did it just fell twice as bad?

I think it was just that he made enough mistakes to fill two games (easily).

He's been a regular touch judge for us, along with Adam Leal.

That's quite interesting, thanks.

Looking at the totals our win ratio is 58% so that's Luke Pearce and below.

However, as we saw this week, our loses are more to do with our bad play and/or opponent's  good play rather than the ref. I suppose if you want to blame a ref you'd need to look at games where there was only one score difference. If you're consistently on the wrong end of those there might be a case to answer.

Thanks for posting MarleyWasp. Very interesting reading.
Whilst I don’t think for 1 second that CMK was the reason we lost ( we are completely to blame for that performance), my heart sinks whenever I see he is officiating our games. It’s his constant stop/start style, it ruins the spectacle in my opinion. We don’t seem to fare much better with Barnes judging by your analysis , but at least the watch is more enjoyable.

A big +1 to MarleyWasp

Me too re CMK, it's stop start and random pedantry, especially with the scrum. You could see that "must whistle" feeling in him when he gave a penalty against us for rolling after being tackled - it was nothing out of the ordinary - only to ignore a roll and seal minutes later. I realise the breakdown is hard to ref, but you do need a feel for the game....

So many variables to this, but is definitely interesting.

e.g. Our win ratio under Barnes might not be great, but that may well be because we’ve been against stronger opposition, or its a much more competitive fixture.

Similarly, with someone like, say, Foley.  Is this because of his style, or because he generally gets sent to ref us when it’s a nothing game, or like a Wasps vs bottom of the table type fixture?

With Barnes, he has done a number of our matches with tougher opposition.

With Foley it's not so clear cut. His last two Wasps matches were against Exeter and Bristol...

I completely agree, CMK makes viewing a game hard work. I'd hazard a guess our wins when he is officiating is despite of his decision making rather than due to it.

I'd be interested to know what his penalty count percentages are against Wasps compared to our opposition.

Given I worked this out whilst watching TV it was not the most accurate and it turned out I'd made a mistake with Karl Dickson. I therefore decided to do a comphrensive check going as far back as possible for League, Cup and European games, which turned out to be back as far as the 1998/99 season. That's 738 games, although two have seen the referee replaced. In those cases I've marked it as one match for both.

In order of win percentage, the full table is as follows (Current RFU and European officials in bold):

Referee            P   W   D   L   Win %
Adam Jones              1   1   0   0   100%
