Genuinely thought he'd get away without even a citing.

I find the charges interesting. I don't see any arguement over intentionality; it was the most deliberate gouge I've seen since David Attoub's 70 week ban in 2009/10. Attoub had some mitigation in that play was still going in so there was a small element of being in the heat of the moment. Carreras doesn't have that defence. On the balance of probability the video should be enough to prove intent.

I'm therefore surprised that they've gone with the lesser charge in case that fails as one of recklessness. I'd expected contact with the eye area or all three. I guess the medical report from Wasps is conclusive as to where his fingers were.

There don't appear to be any offences deemed so  severe that the maximum reduction available is less than 50%, however it is at the panel's discretion to not give the maximum reduction.
