Commentators seemingly not impressed with the ref.
Sounds like Newcastle would have been very annoyed to have lost that but it was there for us for the taking
The ref is massively out of his depth.

Yup, he'll need the TMO to tell him if he wants tea or coffee.
The TMO will sleep tonight he had 2 jobs today.

I watched the game on Peacock.
Wasps lost the game through poor ball retention.
That’s it.
The amount of times the ball slipped out of their hands in good positions was many.
As opposed to Newcastle who had fewer opportunities but kept hold of the ball on a wet and windy day.

I can’t fault the effort put in by every Wasps player. They are pumped up and playing for each other.
I don’t want to put a dampner on this performance. It’s not a match to try and chastise individual players.
It’s just that we tried to play a slightly more expansive game than Newcastle and would have won relatively easily (in trying conditions) if we hadn’t treated the ball like a bar of soap.

Let’s just remember we’ve had a very dry past few months gearing up for these games.
Maybe Newcastle were better prepared - both mentally and physically - for these types of conditions.
Definitely a learning curve for this team this season.

It was Goppeth who got a finger in the eye by Penny.
Probably not intentional. But definitely red.

A few scrum issues that could have been tightened up.
Frustration for all the guys.
We needed to be more clinical.

I was sure that the inside pass just before Budgies' second try was distinctly forward. Officials said no clear evidence >:(

I said before the off that I would be happy to come away with something, which we did. Despite training on our plastic pitch during the week, bounce of the ball was vicious and totally unpredictable.

Whatever we say about the Refs performance, I don't think anyone can argue about the red card, given contact with the eye area is the threshold for a red card: https://twitter.com/w2aps/status/1444333481564250120?s=19

I joked on Twitter that maybe the reason for the BBC Radio Newcastle commentators views were the result of the Falcons players practicing their technique on them. I hadn't seen the video at that point. Now I have I think I may be onto something.

Edit: Screenshot attached. Looks like Penny's pinky finger is in Jimmy's eye to me.

IF we got away with no major injuries on that pitch, that’s as good as a win for me.

Game management at the end was poor. Cost us the game. Shades of last season there.

If the ball is like a bar of soap, stick it up your jumper in the pack and play down time, not ping it wide.
