Gloucester v Wasps: Post Match Thoughts.
« on: April 02, 2022, 05:07:57 PM »
Great escape!

A win on the road is never to be sniffed at!

Is Dobby our new drop kick specialist?

What a win! Built on determination and keeps us in the hunt for a top 8 finish. Brave at the end to compete against a 5 metre attacking line out, very much a s##t or bust moment and luckily it fell our side. However we were not without our problems once again. We were turned over with frightening regularity, and to concede nigh on 20 penalties on many other days should of seen us dead and buried (although that is testament to our effort to get a win despite this). Defence was in and out throughout but did enough. Some players need to improve, West got a bit of a lesson today. Atkinson needs to be more decisive and Frosty's loss of discipline could of cost us. To say it will be a long review session is an understatement and the lads need to be smarter on the rules and tighter on their discipline. When the dust settles they need to know more is expected and higher standards need obtaining if we really want to finish top 8, have a run in the challenge cup and push on for titles domestically and in Europe next season.

But the above is for Mondays review, tonight is all about celebrating the win, realising we have got the away form monkey off our collective backs, sing our hearts out and enjoy a beer or 3!

Chris

Carley and the three officials had an absolute shocker, Scrum calls for Wasps went to Glaws and sending hookers off a joke…. Final lineout seemed to be TMO calling for penalty for in at the side !!

I’m really hoping Will Porter can help attack the fringes.
We’ve been poor in that area of late.
Would love to see him bringing the likes of Alfie, Elliot, Paulo and Jack into the game, getting our offloading game going and building momentum and territory.
Get them committing penalties if they slow things down.

And obviously as a side, we need to repel everything they throw at us.
Big day of tackling.

I was really happy with the progress we have made these past few weeks.
Introducing rusty players back into the fold.
They are now finding their feet. Jack was superb.

But I really liked how they started attaché fringes again.
Porter kept the pace up….and every set piece was contested well…even if we didn’t get the right decisions at times.

I’m just most impressed by the fact the team kept their heads and saw out the win.
Everyone played their part.
Let’s grow together and move upwards together.

Great win…even if some of our own fans keep finding fault in the past two games.
Wins = confidence.
Confidence = better performances.

Onwards and upwards.

Not a really a post match thought because I had it during the match reading the match thread.

To those calling for us to go out and buy and experienced 10, how do you think your ideal player got that experience?

And will you say the same every time we bring a young player through who has potential but then struggles for a season or two?

We may have had about 20 penalties against us but Carley and his crew really didn't have much of a clue. I don't know which position you used to play, Chris. I suspect a back for Tom West didn't get taught a lesson by Balmain because he was infringing at every scrum and finding that he could get away with it, just continued.

You are correct Ross I was a back (had to keep my hair in place and my shirt clean). My criticism of West is based purely on how he managed Balmain. He was boring in and driving upward. It was clear Carley believed it was the hookers (incorrectly so). This is where experience would of meant a lot. He, either directly to Carley or -more correctly- through Launchers to speak to sir, should of called attention to it as soon as it was happening, but unless I missed it not a word was said. Fair play to Balmain for getting away with it. I dream of a day when Scrums become a simple bind correctly and push hard and straight contest, but until that happens it is these little moments that can make big impacts.

I'm not sure that Carley is much of a listener. At the first 2 scrums, the TMO or is it the AR called 'red,red,red', but he let Glos play on with possession. At the second scrum, once again 'red,red,red' was called and Wasps got penalised :o Go figure.

Three wins in eight days is great news for the club.

Wasps were the better team and it would have been a travesty if we had lost.

Very impressed by Porter after messing up a certain try in the first half when - despite having both hands free - he went for the one handed pass out of the back of his hand. Despite that  I think he had his best game for the first team?

We waited a very long time to see Fifita steal one of their line outs but it was worth waiting for. Great performances by all the forwards. I thought Jacob played very well too and I’m unhappy with some of the criticism levelled at him.

Well done everyone.

I'll bite. Because you're admitting you'll sacrifice more matches now if you choose to exclusively use 2 inexperienced fly halves than if you had at least 1 experienced fly half.
