You can't be certain, so all internal fixation should be perfect or as near as possible.
For the rest of us, a small malalignment would make no difference. Otherwise rotation/shortening at the ankle is bad news.
I have operated on top level athletes for 30 + years and I can see no excuse for anything other than a perfect technical result. There is usually one problem to address, in a fit and healthy patient, and there is no time pressure.
