Kucera on instead of Minozzi.

I haven’t heard of young Kucera - is he likely to breakthrough this season?

He is an 18 yo from Beaconsfied RFC. Same club as the Logan offspring.

Not much mention of Mills
Did he play at 10 when Charlie went off?
Did he get any time at 12?

Here is a report from Bobby. Don't know if there will be another to come. It looks like Mills went straight to 10 when Charlie went off with a dead leg.

Wasps kicked off their pre-season campaign with an emphatic 10-try victory over Doncaster Knights.

The Gallagher Premiership visitors to Castle Park showed their class and ruthless edge in the first period registering seven tries.

Matteo Minozzi, Will Porter, Biyi Alo, Dan Frost, Brad Shields and a brace from Josh Bassett kept the scoreboard ticking over for Lee Blackett's men.

Without Paolo Odogwu and Alfie Barbeary to call upon for the second-half following their withdrawals from the 30-man squad named, more points were added after the interval as Ali Crossdale and Dan Robson crossed and Minozzi grabbed a second.

The gulf in class was sizeable as the Black and Golds turned the screw at scrum time, burgled lineouts and took almost every attacking opportunity they created.

Playing only his second game in nine months, it didn't take long for Minozzi to remind people why he was once named in a Six Nations team of the tournament. After the forwards had put in the hard yards to get Doncaster on the backfoot, scrum-half Porter switched play, Charlie Atkinson drew his man and the diminutive Italian arrived on a perfect angle to glide into the left corner.

Nizaam Carr was replaced allowing Brad Shields an earlier-than-expect runout. The England international immediately had an impact, helping steal two lineouts in quick succession. The second effort saw the flanker pounce on loose ball and skilfully draw the last defender and free Porter on a rapid 50-metre scorching run to the line.

Charlie Atkinson's sublime crossfield kick landed in the arms of the onrushing Bassett to crash through three defenders for Wasps' third of the evening.

Three more tries were to be registered before the break as Frost rumbled over from close range and Bassett grabbed his second from long range after smart work from Sam Spink.

Doncaster had their moments and gained a couple of entries into the 22, only for their lineout ball to be poached on each occasion.

Wasps coped with losing their only fit fly-half Atkinson before the break as Ryan Mills arrived ahead of schedule - as the forwards turned the screw to add more points.

Firstly, tighthead prop Alo muscled over then, deep into stoppage time after a probing Minozzi touchfinder, it was Shields' turn to reach over.

Only five Wasps players remained on the pitch entering the second period as the likes of Dan Robson, John Ryan and Ali Crossdale entered proceedings.

It took a little while for the reshaped team to find their feet but they added an eighth try 12 minutes after the restart, recovering from Connor Edwards' sublime 50:22 to turn the ball over and counter. Smart work from Olly Hartley and Luke Mehson advanced Wasps upfield and the turnaround was complete when Crossdale put Minozzi in for his second.

The final two tries had Robson's fingerprints all over them as he first put in a delicious grubber for Crossdale to put on the afterburners and win the foot race to ground the ball. Then he sensed indecision at the back of a Doncaster ruck to pounce, hack ahead and comfortably win the foot race to score a converted try that brought up the half century of points.

Doncaster showed spirit and grit to grind their way into a late promising field position but couldn't manage to wrestle their way over as Tom Cruse clinched a breakdown turnover close to his goaline.

Wasps now move onto the much sterner test of a trip to United Rugby Championship side the Dragons in a week's time as preparations continue heading into the Gallagher Premiership season opener against Gloucester at Kingsholm on Sunday, September 11.

Isn't it nice to have Wasps rugby back? I am now thoroughly looking forward to having less free time at the weekend  ;D

That was a great way to start the season off. Standard disclaimer that Doncaster are just a very decent Championship side who are also in pre-season so we should very much expect to beat them, but...

Three biggest positives

Our D - Caveat as above but to go anywhere and 'nil' a side is a good achievement. Donny put us under pressure a few times and especially at the end and our defence stood firm each time. We were without many of our better breakdown operators (Jack, Gabe, Alfie and Lauch) yet still went hard, were disruptive and reasonably disciplined.

Set piece/scrum - Line out and maul was good, Cardall coming into his own and went well as caller. The scrum however was imperious: considering Hislop was a weak link at the scrum last year and EM-M is a 4th choice TH playing LH I thought we did really well here and it showed how much pre-season work has gone into it. As West, Martinez and Koch come into contention it should hopefully give us a great platform to attack from.

Minozzi - Such a tough few years for Matteo, arriving as such a bright talent and then facing lockdown in a foreign country, injuries and the eye issue that must have been very frightening, he was a forgotten man. After last night he's put himself in a good position to be our starting 15.

Other positives

Charlie Atkinson - Park the place kicks for now. We know that Charlie has the parts to his game to be an exceptional fly-half, he just needs to put them all together on a consistent basis. He looked full of confidence, excellent decision making, good kick for Josh. An lot to like. This is the first season he's starting as our first choice 10, I'm really hoping he shows how good he can be and stays at that level.

Scrum halves - It's a shame Sam is out for a few months but Dan and Will both had good games. Porter came of age last year and I'm hoping that he builds on that again this year. Dan looked awesome though; he seems to have developed into such an intelligent player who makes good decisions. It's going to be good to see them push each other all season.

Ryan Mills - He didn't have a stand out game. In fact when he was playing 10 there was a lot of variation in first receiver but he played most of the game and it was great to see him out there and looking fit. I think he has a lot to do to win fans over after the troubles he has had but he put his hand up to paly a position he hasn't played for a good few years and managed it well and I think he will be an important part of the squad this year.

Improvements

Place kicking - Obviously. We left 14 points out there. Admittedly there were some tough kicks but we need our kicker to be at least 70%+, ideally 75%+. Needs work, probably needs a dedicated kicking coach.

Handling - Yes, pre-season but still a few too many little errors. Forwards need to be able to pass and catch or attacks break down. Better than a lot of last year but still a bit of work.

End of last season I managed to talk to Minozzi, and he indicated  the main reason that he was not being used was the eye was still worrying the medical staff, but he was certain he would be back this season. Looks like he was correct!

I'm not too worried about him "being peppered with high balls, as he showed how well he could deal with them as Italy's FB.

Looks like we were using Minozzi and  Odendaal as playmakers, which together with Mills, Atkinson and Dan/Will could make it really confusing for opposition teams.

My main concern this season isn't any particular position - more the place kicks. Currently neither Atkinson nor Umaga are absolutely reliable. We need to recruit someone like Miller!

Hopefully we’ll see some footage of the tries today.
Would like to see some of the breaks mentioned as well as Atkinson’s kick to Bassett.
