Rest Period Farce Continues.
« on: September 16, 2022, 01:24:20 PM »
Extract from article in this morning's DT.

Harlequins have been left confused and frustrated ahead of this weekend’s London derby after they were barred from picking Marcus Smith, even though Saracens will welcome back five England stars.

Owen Farrell, Maro Itoje and Billy Vunipola all start for Mark McCall’s side with Mako Vunipola and Jamie George named among the replacements. Each of these men toured Australia in July and featured in a hard-fought Test series alongside Smith.

However, the 23-year-old fly-half has not been granted special dispensation to appear in what promises to be a tantalising Premiership fixture on Saturday at the Twickenham Stoop, risking further debate over the integrity of rest protocols for elite players.

I read "ballsed" as "biased"......I'd be very pissed if Quins.

Still like to know how those 5 England players fit within the cap.....

It might look like a farce, but we have no idea what planned rest periods both teams have put in place for their England players. Pat Lams explanation of how he got Genge playing in the first game was a good one. Put a proper plan in place, share with the England hierarchy & if they agree to it, all's good.
It may be that Quinns rest plan hasn't been approved & the Sarries one has. Who knows?

But hey, much better to suggest a conspiracy to help Sarries :)

But hey, much better and easier to have no special dispensations whatsoever ;)

That wouldn't bother me. So long as it is the same for everyone.

I’m not suggesting any conspiracy but surely it would just be better to say if you toured you can’t play until x. Say the same to everyone. Very simple and avoids all the associated ridiculousness that teams go through.

Cue Eddie selecting Farrell at 10 against Argentina with Marcus Smith not in the squad as he's undercooked and lacking game time. All part of the plan...
