So a couple of people disliked Foley’s refeering. Please explain what he did wrong compared to other referees. I thought it was an exciting games especially with Bath improving in the second half. They have a good acquisition from Worcester.

Two things I saw from the start before I switched off, both of which were brought to his attention. Gloucs ruck on their 22, player joins the back to make the snake. hangs on with his finger tips, if that. Bath players asks if it is out, which, as the players is not bound, it is ... he says not. Now, I watched carefully, at every similar ruck, Bath bind on properly and firmly, Gloucs do not. It means Gloucs can use one player less to make the same length snake. Huge number of times Gloucester tackling player got in the way to either slow the ball down or enable the jackal. Not a word said most of the time.

Gloucs lineout on the Bath 5m. Poor throw and only just caught, players Gloucs players bind on before he is down, passes ball directly to last player to bind at the back, directly over the top of the maul. Foley says not a thing. It goes on. He simply wasn't applying the laws. Bath captain asks and is shut down. On that second, the consequential fast break from the maul (which is why the law does not allow that direct to the back pass) causes Bath to get a yellow card ...

You can't play the game the way you trained if the ref won't play by the laws.

I enjoyed the game, it was good entertainment but the problem with Foley was that he didn’t ref to the laws. The 5m line out NWW mentioned was the worst bit - he actually screamed to the Glaws player to “play away”. So he knew they’d infringed but let them go. I agree it’s not just him. Offside now seems optional and the breakdown is like the Wild West. To be fair, to give refs and new supporters any chance a simplification of the laws needs to happen.

I am not sure that simplification is the answer. If they were savagely enforced it might at least make the cheating coaches think twice.

Referees are too often lauded for having empathy with the game and allowing many transgressions to go unpunished.
Referees are often panned for being whistle happy.

Yet some fans/critics feel the other way, and then you have some in the middle.

Ultimately some people will see a referee as terrible while others see them as excellent.

I've got to the point where I ignore the referee and just accept their decisions.
I find it's one less thing to get upset about in life

+1, especially the breakdown. WE put a reminder out a year or  so back but it's like it never happened. Emphasising the Laws cat breakdown and esp ruck.
