Some of Wasps' biggest names could be on the move ahead of the club entering administration

Premiership rivals target Joe Launchbury and Jack Willis after Wasps administration notice
Wasps have already received enquiries from rival Premiership clubs for England internationals Joe Launchbury and Jack Willis after the club announced it will enter administration in the coming days.

The Coventry-based club was suspended from the Premiership on Wednesday after it was forced to withdraw from Saturday’s match against Exeter Chiefs, and it is understood they will have that sanction made permanent if they cannot fulfil the fixture with Newcastle Falcons at the end of the month.

Wasps are understood to be exploring the possibility of loaning players to Premiership clubs if they are relegated to the Championship next season, which should be automatic after entering administration unless the club can successfully appeal on the grounds of a “no fault” insolvency, which would offer the likes of Launchbury and Willis a chance to maintain their Premiership careers before returning to the club if they were promoted for the following season.

Telegraph Sport can also reveal that academy players have already been told to try and find options elsewhere ahead of the club entering administration by Monday.

Launchbury, the Wasps club captain, made his first-team debut 11 years ago and has remained at the club ever since, going through the club's last financial crisis in 2012 when Wasps were narrowly saved from an HMRC winding-up petition before their move to Coventry.

Willis meanwhile has been one of the top talents produced by Wasps in recent years, featuring in England's series win over Australia last summer, and unsurprisingly is commanding significant interest from Premiership rivals.

With salary caps filled by most clubs at this stage of the season Premiership sides will only be able to bring in Wasps players using the £400,000 injury dispensation provided to each club over the season, as Bath have done in recent weeks with Worcester players Ollie Lawrence (who has since signed a long-term Bath contract after Worcester players' contracts were terminated), Ted Hill, Fergus Lee-Warner and Valery Morozov.

As a result of that limited cap space Wasps players will be faced with looking for moves to the RFU Championship - Will Chudley, the former Worcester scrum-half, completed a move to Coventry on Wednesday - as well as France and Japan.

There is currently no special dispensation in place from the Rugby Football Union allowing Worcester or Wasps players to move to France and remain eligible for England selection, meaning that Wasps' England hopefuls including Launchbury, Willis and Alfie Barbeary would have to remain in England to be eligible for Eddie Jones' squad ahead of the Rugby World Cup.

An RFU spokesperson said: "Discussions are ongoing with key stakeholders around player eligibility for the Rugby World Cup and guidance will be offered to players and clubs in the coming weeks."

After this weekend's fixture with Exeter Chiefs was cancelled, players and staff were told to leave the club's training ground in Henley-in-Arden. The squad have been advised to return on Monday for an update.

Wednesday's statement from Wasps Holdings

Holdings Ltd - overseeing the men’s and women’s rugby teams, the netball team and the stadium - said that there was "likely to be insufficient time to find a solvent solution for the companies within the group", with administration therefore likely "with a view to concluding deals shortly thereafter".

While potential investors are likely to insist that Wasps retain their lucrative ‘P share’, worth in excess of £9m, there is a real prospect of the other Premiership clubs buying the share from Wasps, therefore cutting off the club's access to central funding.

Nick Eastwood, the Wasps chief executive, is no longer a director of the club's holding company following a termination of appointment along with another board member, Robert Gray, on Wednesday.

Launchbury has been one of my favorite players for over 10 years and I would only wish him the very best of luck, such a gentleman. if he has to leave then I would say Quins would be a nice fit for him. Play good rugby and as long as it wasn't sarries or Tigers. Willis to london Irish seems a bit odd if the reports are true

Wasn't Joe cut from Quins academy back in his teenage years?

Even so, with Pearson playing well and being a direct competitor for and England slot LI doesn't make the most sense. He won't be short of offers.

The players cannot do much other than talk to other clubs, because their salaries were paid last month, and they would have to wait until they are not paid at the end of this month. They might have a termination clause in the case of formal insolvency, but it would appear that said formal insolvency has yet to happen (much to my surprise), AFAIK.

Nelly I'm pretty sure I read that the club have told the players to discuss loan deals with other club. Reading so much stuff can't remember where i saw it
