The Once a Wasp 1st XV
« on: January 26, 2019, 11:51:30 AM »
It's no secret that a lot of us used to (or indeed still do) play the game. So I thought it might be fun to see if we can form a complete team.

I am what can only be described as a utility forward.  I played 2nd row at school as I was taller than most of my friends, though whenever the opportunity arose I shuffled my way to the back row.  When I played later I tended to either be a 6 or 7, but did once cover LH against a visiting international team, I couldn't walk the next day, but it was a lot of fun (and we won).  If I was to describe my style it would be like Haskell but slower and with fewer ball skills ;)  I can tackle, and clear out a ruck, I've even stolen a ball once or twice...

So I'm gonna put myself down as a 6.  I'm happy to move if someone deserves it more.

Well I was principally hooker but I did play tight head and flanker - either side, we played left and right in those days.

You can have 2, it's the only forward position I never played!

Suits me, though I found flanker surprisingly easy to play, after the front row :)

Full back.  Played it for Wasps teams in late 60’s early 70’s.

Lock, No8, but usually LHP

At 6'4, I was usually a bit tall for prop at the low level I played at. However, most teams I played for were always short of props so I played where needed

I did have 2 games at fly half when recovering from a serious knee injury and the captain was a bit too scared to put me in the pack.
All I learnt from that is that I'm not a 10

Crash ball from 10 was actually quite amusing though

fly-half me.... although with buggered knees and a shoulder that’ll dislocated if I pass left I may be a tad porous in defence. Maybe I need to change my profile name to £5!!

Loose-head prop.

Rolling subs may be the order of the day. 15 minutes each?

I don't think I could last for 2 minutes. I am grossly overweight and unfit, but on the road back to gorgeousness (was never, ever there). Been going swimming now for over a year once a week and have now upped that to twice a week. Did a two hour coached session in the gym today (first time really in decades, to be a weekly session for the time being, with a work towards twice a week in two month's time, then three times a week a few months later. Can he get back to 13 stone? Can he get fit again? Time will tell.

Right now a lot of muscles are aching.

Someone's beaten me to it by offering to be a sub so I'll stick to wing - back in the time when wings threw in to lineouts.
Worse playing experience. Playing for Ealing Thirds at Henley and we were the last of three games to finish on a wet & muddy November afternoon. So the previous teams beat us to the communal baths. Not a pretty sight! Thank goodness for the jugs of beer.
