Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Season End
« on: March 16, 2020, 10:49:34 AM »
Been thinking about this in respect to football (especially with Leeds being an important part of my family’s sporting interest).

I’d say let’s not worry about next season, we have a season in progress so why don’t we finish it when we can at a reasonable rate, have a good break for an off season and then plan how to reset the sporting calendar.

I understand the issues with contracts often ending in June/July but I’m sure most clubs would be open to extending them until the season ends or maybe just allowing a mid season transfer week where players move to their new clubs.

Saves all conflict as you can’t argue about something that hasn’t happened yet.

I think longevity is the main focus. With Mills’ injury record, it would be good to have the pair of them. With Gopps not being required to play every week and maybe giving more scope to work on the coaching side, we could make the most of his ability and experience for more than just next year.

Maybe with less reliance on Mills to be first choice 12 we will also lower his risk of injury.

I don’t care if our defence is flaky, really missed the you can score 25 cause we’ll score 35 mindset

Great performance across the board, players look happy and confident and it’s really showing

Brilliant drop goal, looks like the Harlem Wasptrotters are here to stay. Brilliantly entertaining and looking solid in most areas.

I think the other point is that he hasn’t been with the England squad for the past month with Marler and Genge performing fantastically without him.

Eddie probs doesn’t feel like he needs him in the squad having missed that amount of training etc

Looking at how good he’s been at 15 and the difference in Minozzis performances for Italy on the wing compared to at 15, would love to see if they could both be in our back 3 for the future.

It’s amazing what a lack of relegation pressure can do to you. Think we seem to have stumbled across a system that gets the most out of the players. On paper we all knew the squad is more than good enough for the top 6, now we have performances to match.

Umaga has been a revelation and it’s no surprise that Jimmy’s availability has improved us. Also looks like Dobby is back to his old self. I can see us getting top 4 if we keep this form up.

I think Odogwu becoming a 12 is unlikely as he is so effective out wide and we perform much better with a proper distributor at 12. Spink might get more of an opportunity, we might recall Will Simmonds (scores a cracking try for Nottingham at the weekend) but I think Lima may do some covering at 12 and Miller played for the A team there too.

I think Miller is a bit of an unsung hero for us, covers so many positions and always gives his all.

He’s a proper clubman. Leadership when he’s on the field too should not go unnoticed.

Think it’s really enabled us to play a SR based on the team we’re against. More power pick Rowlands, more mobility/line out pick Gaskell

That rather supposes that Gaskell manages to play more than one or two games in a row without getting crocked for months, which is what has been going on for some great time. Matthews has proved far more consistent, but is neither power nor mobile. If you want mobile, pick Tibo.
Exactly

It’s a real shame we struggle with injuries in the second row as our depth would make them the best collection in the league (bar EAs) if there were all fit

As frustrating as it’s been, were slap bang in the middle of the season. 11 played, 11 to go. Season is far from over and looking at the table, we could get top 4 if we play like we did on Friday for the rest of the season.

I bought my tix very early and while they had a deal on (6 tix for the price of 5) they were the £20 ones with limited availability. Wasn’t much of the ground open even when they first went on sale.

With Watson having played a lot of rugby recently and also appearing much more comfortable on the wing, might be an interesting proposal to have Lima at 15. I like the way he can run in broken field and having an extra playmaker has often done us good (Cips, Gopps, Beale/WLR)
