Good team.

Willis off the bench usually adds stability in the second half, we'll need that for sure.

I would agree in the absence of ZZ, Sops would probably be my choice too.

Wasps prop Simon McIntyre will return to the starting line-up for this Friday night’s Gallagher Premiership Round 4 clash against his former club Sale Sharks at the AJ Bell Stadium (kick-off 7.45pm).

McIntyre, who has yet to feature this season following a hernia operation, is named at loosehead to partner Kieran Brookes and Tommy Taylor in the front-row – the latter who will also be coming up against his former employers.

Charlie Matthews replaces James Gaskell (shoulder) in the second-row alongside Will Rowlands, while Brad Shields, Nizaam Carr and Sione Vailanu occupy the back-row.

Another former Sale player in Paolo Odogwu starts, as he keeps his place in the back-three next to Matteo Minozzi and Zach Kibirige, while Juan de Jongh replaces the injured Malakai Fekitoa (hand) to partner Jimmy Gopperth in the centres.

Dan Robson will lead the side from scrum-half after scoring two tries in the opening three league matches, alongside Lima Sopoaga at stand-off, whose 15 points last weekend saw him pass the 200-point milestone for the Club.

Jack Willis returns after a laceration to his knee to be named among the replacements, while Tom Cruse is also set for his 50th Premiership appearance in Wasps colours from the bench.

Wasps Director of Rugby Dai Young said: “There were a lot of pleasing aspects to our performance last weekend against Bath but now we have to back that up.

“Sale is always a difficult place to go and they are a side littered with top-class players and will no doubt be competing at the top of the table throughout this season.

“We pushed them all the way a few weeks ago when we went up there in the Cup, so hopefully we can produce an 80-minute performance when we head up this Friday and come away with the right result.”

No sign of Jake C-W in their squad. Is he injured?

VG to have Chesty back.

Nice to have SM and JW back. I think they'll drop the high ball on our back three quite a bit. If we can secure it and run it back we could get some joy there. Our bench looks stronger so if we are in it after an hour it could be a good night.

If JCW is injured then it won't come as a surpise to us.

Flament part of the 23 again. I doubt he can be promoted to the senior squad mid-season but there's been very little sign of Theo V.

Wasps obviously like what they see and its a heart warming to see someone succeed having not followed the normal conveyor belt to becoming a professional rugby player

But ... as he has not been in anyone else's academy, and he is young enough and has joined ours, he becomes home grown for us.

Only home grown if he joins before he's 18 I think?

Shugs,

Hate to be that guy, last season we beat them at Sale on a Saturday. Season before we lost at Sale on a Friday (Cips and Robson double headbut with Faf match).

To do with the cap at least in part I'd have thought.  Senior squad members' salaries all contribute to the cap.  If he's eligible to be registered as an academy player then makes sense to keep him there as that falls outside the cap, but can still play for the 1st XV.

Is there a PRL ceiling as to what a club can pay academy players? Is there a time limit on how long a player can be in an academy at the same club?

There must be or else Sarries would be plying with only an "academy" base team of Lions and other internationals

Yes it was all down to Saracens, everything good in rugby is down to Saracens

Why is Henry Slade playing for exeter and Luke c-d on the bench and we can't play Launchbury
Title: Re: Team's up
Post by: baldpaul101 on November 08, 2019, 01:42:17 PM
I don't there any reason outside of Wasps why Launchbury isn't playing. My understanding was that Wasps gave him the time off, not England demanded it.
Title: Re: Team's up
Post by: DGP Wasp on November 08, 2019, 01:48:24 PM
Launch not playing is Wasps's choice.  Dai apparently allowed him a week off with the family post WC.  I was hoping we'd see him on the bench.

Given that Baxter has pulled few punches in the wake of the Sarries shenanigans this week, he may be making a point, that due to the relative lack of depth in their squad from operating within the cap, some of us can ill afford the luxury of resting players.
Title: Re: Team's up
Post by: Westy68 on November 08, 2019, 02:34:00 PM
I except resting and I thought you had to give certain players 2 weeks but as Henry Slade played in the final and launchbury didn't really play much, can we afford to lose another match considering how tough this game will be. Launchbury will not be tired.
Title: Re: Team's up
Post by: Raggs on November 08, 2019, 02:58:38 PM
Slade was only a sub for the last two.

Exeter tend to play lowest denominator rugby anyway, so it's not like they'll need to spend time adapting.

Keep in mind Westy that although Launch didn’t have much game time in Japan, he would have gone through all the training sessions and all the intense conditioning. Meaning he’s not had an off season. So think it could be wise to give him a break to recharge both his batteries and mind.
Title: Re: Team's up
Post by: AKWasp on November 08, 2019, 04:13:20 PM
Think England have an agreement of a certain number of weeks break (maybe 2 for the players who played and 1 for those who got less game time) that must be taken within the first 6 weeks they return.

Remember a few seasons ago Dai asked for Launch to play a few games for Wasps while we were short on 2nd rows with the premise that he would rest him once some players got fit.

It may be that Baxter feels he can do without Slade in Europe or there are easier games ahead in the prem than this weekend where as Dai would rather have Launch back for Europe especially as we seem to have a couple of SRs in decent form and fitness currently.

Also let us not forget Launch has a family and has not seen them for months (I think one England Rugby "WAG" said she had not seen her other half since June with only odd weekends). He also has spent zero time with our team and needs fitting in time in training (where undoubtably he will rip it up). We will give him a good welcome in Bordeaux next week!

I can't see spending an afternoon on the pitch will impact 'family time'. If he was fit and willing i'd have liked to have seen him in the game.

Probably not. But as he's unfortunately not turning out for isle of Wight rugby clubs firsts, I'm guessing he'd probably have been expected to be at training etc during the week, and traveling with the team to the match and back. So I'm guessing it would have been a bit more than just an afternoon or indeed evening, away.

I think it's the right call, and playing Slade etc is the wrong call. Apart from being away from home, they have been on a massive high, then a huge low, then home and jet lagged. I bet they are mentally exhausted. I don't begrudge him a week or so off, it may pay dividends later.

You can be in the academy up to age 24 but the moment you are paid £30k a year you are no longer academy
