Eight first-team players are named in the Wasps A matchday 23 for tonight’s Round 9 Premiership Rugby Shield match against Worcester Cavaliers at Sixways (kick-off 7.30pm).

Kieran Brookes, Tom West, Kearnan Myall, Alex Rieder, Michael Le Bourgeois and Ross Neal all start while Charlie Matthews and Antonio Harris are named among the replacements.

Brookes and West join skipper Gabriel Oghre in the front row while Academy lock Tim Cardall partners Myall in the second row. James Seabrook and Tom Willis line up with Rieder in the back row.

Academy half-back combination Will Porter and Jacob Umaga start with Le Bourgeois and Sam Spink in the centres.

In the back three, Neal, who scored a try and assisted three more against Leicester Tigers A last time out, is joined by Cameron Anderson and Callum Sirker.

Academy duo Sirker and Anderson both thoroughly impressed in the recent wins over Northampton Wanderers and Leicester - Sirker in particular ran in six tries across the two fixtures while Anderson was instrumental in Wasps’ ferocious attack that put ten tries on the Tigers.

Entry to the match is £7.50 for adults and free for under 17s. There is also free on-site parking at Sixways.

Try scorers so far:

Antonio Harris
Jacob Umaga
Tim Cardall
Callum Sirker

Umaga converted three, the last one from the touchline bounced off the post and missed. Did someone mention it is raining? Thunderstorm. Lots of lightning around too apparently. I didn't go (not too far on my motorbike); there was a really big thunderstorm where I live also.

Sounds like another good win although we don't know what type of team Wuss put out.

For whatever reason Wasps seem to be now putting out an A team based on on the competition's philosphy i.e. mostly academy players.. a handful of senior squad players (either coming back from injury or just getting game time) with the occasional guest player.

I hope Dai is able to take this through to the next season's Premiership Cup (if its taking place?) and A games

I think Dai realises that the way they went about the PremCup this year was throwing youngsters at wolves. Plus injuries throughout hit quantity of players. I suspect next season the PremCup which starts a few weeks before the premiership will be used to integrate the senior squad not off to the WC. The A fixtures will also be interesting.

Sirker quite speedy.

Umaga really seems to do the deception well. It's key to stopping the defence from just blitzing out the back and killing the move.

That Sirker try is something else!!!!!

We have been running that move for years, most effectively off Cipriani. Bassett and Daly have regularly made line breaks with that love but no one has run it it like that from the left wing!!!!

Sirker - that try was v serious wheels, only Wade or a young Varndell could get close to that sort of extravagance - really good top speed as well as moves and the like. Wow!

Great try...but the Worc 15 was as quick in the race to the line?

Great try...but the Worc 15 was as quick in the race to the line?

Pretty obvious from the video that Sirker was easing up from 10 metres out knowing that the try was in the bag even taking into consideration the covering defender had the angle on him! What the video also doesn't really show you is the work Sirker did before coming in off the left wing to take the pass out the back so he would be perfectly entitled to be feeling a little knackered toward the end of his run in.

To all that were in attendance that evening it was almost universally remarked by supporters (both Wasps and Worcester) that they couldn't recall seeing somebody cover the ground as quick as Sirker in scoring this try!

You're very welcome Hymenoptera.

Just as an aside, I overheard a Wasps player talking to somebody whom I assumed to be a male family member saying that Sirker was officially the quickest player in the Club and had been clocked at a top speed of 10.5 metres per second in the previous Shield encounter with Leicester!

That equates to a speed of 37.8 km/h and, to put that speed into context, the fastest a player in the recent Hong Kong leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series was officially clocked at 36 km/h. At an elite level, where margins are generally pretty small, that difference is very significant and could explain why Sirker is so devastating:

If true, that's insane. Johnny May clocked a 10.49m/s recently, to give some easily comparable context.

Wade went over 11 m/s

The really, really quick guys would be getting 10.5 or 10.6 while Christian is regularly getting 11 and sometimes hitting 11.1 and 11.2

That's interesting as Wade himself has said that Carlin Isles (USA 7s & Olympic qualified sprinter) is the fastest rugby player in the world - Isles appears in the video link I originally posted of the top 4 fastest players at this years' Hong Kong leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Here's the article where Wade talks about this subject:

One of the tries Sirker scored in the 1st half against Tigers you could see him change gear as he obviously decided top speed was the key, so assume it was the one he clocked the highest speed.

I've seen him in a number of A-League games and I would say that it is only the last few he has really stepped upto the plate, in some of the earlier A Games he was quite anonymous which at the time was disappointing as when he played Prem 7's at the start of the season he was amazing.

If they both maintain their quoted top speed - that isn't true is it?

I'd expect someone who was first a sprinter to be the fastest. The ones who Wade quotes are all excellent wingers, Varndell was decently quick too, that season they scored loads was fun. Wade stopped doing "straight" athletics as a junior - decent junior times - the GPS numbers for him quoted are very good indeed and I think we'd all agree, someone we'd prefer to be playing for our team! The key, apparently to a good 100m time, which I suppose is less important than acceleration for rugby? is that the winner loses least speed after 60m or so?

Think it’s been said that Sirker has still been adapting to the 15s game which would make sense considering the A league had a break where he could work on his game before coming back with a bang for this block.

Think there’s also something to be said about the way the team are playing- they’re putting players into space and Umaga is central to that.

Lastly there’s a good balance of players, half academy, half senior players needing game time and no guests. Shows some sort of collective and continuity that can’t be underestimated.
