Title: Siya Kolisi
Post by: JonnyD on October 03, 2020, 09:58:31 PM
Ruck.co.uk has us after him as our marquee signing for next season.
Montpellier also interested.

Not sure how this will work with Shields, Young and the Willis Bros already signed up and Vailanu only one season in

It would work bloody well.

He is as hard as nails, and a leader.

Can't see it. At the minute he wouldn't get in!

Ruck.co.uk is absolute rubbish.

They're the guys who had us signing lozowski for restart/next season. I'd take what they say with no confidence.

Not saying I don't rate him either. But given our back row options not sure we need him? Depth at 6 I guess with Shields?

Also if we couldn't keep Carr how can we sign Kolisi?

Would be a signing much bigger than just on the pitch but as mentioned previously can't see it unless the likes of Nizaam and WLR put in a good word for the club.

Its great to think that someone with his stature would want to play for us, but I'm not sure we need any more internationals, assuming he still expects to play for SA? If he doesn't even better.

Given the way internationals are going to be affecting the coming season what we need are good solid club players to cover for our internationals (and injures), the sort of player who knows they aren't going to get called up but still gives  everything.

If he wants to come and Sopps is moving on....then yes please!

x1000

What a player to bring in.
Think of the level of leadership and experience he would bring to a young squad.
And he would attract new fans too.

Joe is a wonderful ambassador for this club, but he can’t do it all himself.
We still lack a bit of stealy hard-nosed leadership.
The guy has won a World Cup, for gawd’s sake.

What a signing that would be.
And a great statement too.

If Wasps are to once again progress to the knockout stages of Europe, they need a couple of big players like this.

Bloke in North Dorset,

That's a good point. I always saw our academy players to be the solid reliable backbone of the team, and the marquee/international signings to be icing on an already good team. See Exeter and how they've developed their squad. From a point of view of leadership and motivation he's absolutely one of the most influential players in the world. Jack and Launch can't do it by themselves!

A WC winning Capt wouldn't be cheap (when most clubs are struggling to survive) and he'd be away with SA for a 3rd of the year at least.

Sounds like an agent trying to create interest by throwing various club names into the press.

Agreed. He's a great role model and would also attract a lot of interest in the club from youngsters, especially young black kids, a demographic that rugby hasn't really tapped in to so there's bound to be some latent talent going missing.

Me too, The Ruck has a reputation for generating (IMHO) fantasy clickbait stories.

Can't see it myself. Despite all the plus points it really doesn't add up.

Likely fiction, but lovely if true. There's certainly potential link from Nemo recommending, and Willie too.

Would see it as a sort of George Smith type signing, iconic player that should help improve those around him.

Would certainly be a big statement if true.  Not sure I can see it though in all honesty and would expect him to more than likely find himself playing in France.

I agree it's unlikely to happen but what I don't agree on is we don't need need him.

Any side in club rugby can be improved upon by signing a world class flanker who has just captained his country to a World Cup final win.

This may make sense from a playing point of view but with the game's finances in such a parlous state, and with the likelihood that he won't come cheap, I think it would be a wrong move.

If the vaccine doesn't come quickly enough and crowds of a size which would sustain the game are not allowed to watch the game for, say, another six to nine months, I think we could see many clubs go to the wall. We've been close enough for me not to want to go within a mile of that happening again.

Can’t see it happening.
We have moved away from the model of galacticos and towards a model of grow your own.
If there is any money to be invested - and I don’t think there is - it should go towards further developing the Academy.

We have some top class back row players and we still have the likes of Alfie and Gaby who are more than good enough to play there.

Whilst this seems unlikely, did Shields' contract extension actually get confirmed? Would hate to lose him, but...

I also read somewhere that there are a bunch of top WC-winning Saffers on the market (incl. Kolisi), stuffed by combination of coronavirus, Super Rugby imploding, and French clubs having less capacity/funds for non-FQPs. Would guess Jaguares, and maybe Aussies, on the market in bulk as well...

Regardless of Sops' future in Coventry, doesn't the priority need to be a sucessor to Gopps? I can't even think of strong, potentially available marquee candidate, though I thought Miller again did really will stepping in as 12, i.e. has more to offer than employed to date.

Mills already in to cover Gops.

Sopoaga is still with us next season, whether he can be shifted in the wage structure so that another marquee can come in remains to be seen.
Shields was in the list of re-signings a while ago, assume we have him until at least the end of next June

Managed to forget all three of those with the split-season!

I like Mills, but early days and not yet obviously holding a candle to Gops, yet. Gops clearly has ingredient X (like Alex King and Fraser Waters), but maybe we don't need like-for-like if Blackett taking a deeper/broader more 'squad' and ongoing developmental approach than in the recent past, incl. baking in multiple playmakers. Not clued up on who's coming through academy on this front...

TBH I thought our team was pretty good 12 months ago, just not quite clicking as it needed too, but close. Now, with some stuff to learn, we have 40+ players who can switch in and out of the matchday squad pretty well. Why might we thing it worth throwing megabucks after potential stardust with what we already have?

Lima tweeted last week that he’d watched Chasing The Sun, the documentary that follows the Springboks from about 18-24 months from the World Cup to the Final and was raving about it.

It’s not available in the Uk off of any of the streaming platforms but if you google it there’s a Reddit thread with some alright links to download and watch.

Watched it back to back on Friday evening and it’s brilliant - some of the stories and thinking are heart-warming and ingenious.

Well worth a watch.

A decent amount of input from WLR too including one part where he tells the coaches he’s not sure he’s good enough.

https://www.rugbypass.com/news/can-you-imagine-siya-kolisi-living-in-cov-the-rugby-pod-on-the-wasps-in-for-springboks-skipper-rumour-south-africa/

Rugby Pod addressed this rumour, which has been mentioned by Ruck (rubbish fantasy rugby) again. Goode highly doubts Kolisi would go to Wasps and expects he goes to France (like we all expect).

But when quizzed about Devoto and Stooke he said something along the lines of "no comment and Devoto didn't meet Blackett before January" kind of thing. He usually replies "no comment" to players we're linked with.

Chances are Kolisi won’t be leaving South Africa .

Are you sure? If so, there is, more importantly, a chance that Malakai will still be here.

Think this was from last season, even though October, when there was speculation Lima was off.
Pretty sure he’ll be off at the end of this season, with a baby on the way I’d probably want to get back to the safety of NZ or to more money in France
