Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Kent!
« on: October 24, 2023, 08:14:21 AM »
I think, like some, the away games will be a regular thing with the odd home game, having been season ticket holders since the 1st match at the Ricoh I don't see us being STH again (in Kent, if 6ways happens that may be different).
I used to go to Brands Hatch a lot (and looking at the maps went past the planned site every time) and used to use the M1 route before I gave up and took the longer (145 vs 125miles), but usually quicker M40 route home, regularly the traffic home was a nightmare due to Dartford and I think that will be a big negative for a lot who come from the eastern side of the country.

I enjoyed listening to Cips's interview with Jim Hamilton. Doesn't sound like he's been too complimentary of Dai in his book either though.

Just catching up with this interview this morning. Danny comes across really well, a couple of comments about Dai.

Where are you seeing these messages that good news is coming?

The comment was attributed to Scrivener by someone who was speaking to him at an event at the weekend.

Wonder if Daly is headed south either at or near Pau, him and Dobby were very good friends.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: On more pleasant matters. Rugby WC Fra v NZ

I disagree. I thought Carley was as good and as consistent as he was in our games. Oh, wait, he wasn't that good was he?

In fact, he let Wales get away with so much. Fiji were robbed by him.

There was also an incident in the Saffa V Scotland game where the ref and TMO both missed a clear red card, were even asked to check it, and didn't. Was it Wiese standing up in a tackle, or was it Kriel? Clear head contact, no mitigation. The ref and officials also missed repeated and obvious offsides as the Saffa defence jumped on the Scots before the ball was out. Very poor I thought. Some refs clearly are not up to the job at hand.

Standard of refereeing is still an issue.

There was so much poor referee decisions in that Scotland game, other than the Red that was missed the one that annoyed me most was the great counter ruck Scotland got in the 1st half got ready to pick up the ball when, I think Etzebeth, throws the ball back to his retreating players, the ref states it was knocked back!
Didn't help that Scotland butchered to excellent try scoring opportunities, the 1st of which would have put them in the lead early on.

Wonder what Borthwick will do when Baby Farrell is available, does he drop Ford to the bench or is it back to the age old Ford/Farrell 10/12.
Assume 100% Farrell will be playing.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Baxter talks some sense
« on: September 08, 2023, 08:38:00 AM »
Not sure I agree he is talking sense, he's just having another whine about the latest topics.

A lot of the narrative he is currently complaining about was started by him with his 'we need a 10 team league to survive' .

Plus I don't get the Premiership is the most competitive, there were a number of results last year where the winning margins were huge, as teams put out weaker squads if they thought it was a match they wouldn't win etc.

I always liked Baxter but in the last 2 years he has gone so far down in my estimation I tend to ignore him now.
Premiership Rugby, in my opinion, can fall apart and the quicker the better, they allowed 3 of their teams to disappear without doing anything. And basically prevented them from having any opportunity to regroup.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Alapati Leiua
« on: August 07, 2023, 08:24:58 AM »
Always like Alapati, great player who unfortunately spent too long injured with Wasps but a lovely guy who came and played touch rugby with us a few times at Broadstreet all off his own back.

Always felt it was a shame what happened with injury and getting dropped by the French club after he left Bristol.

Spotted the following post on the Bristol RN board. Good to hear he has found a club in NZ to continue playing.

Quote
Alapati scored 2 tries on the wing for North Harbour against my team, Hawkes Bay. Good to see him in action again.

Scotland v Italy this Saturday. Anyone know if Paolo may get picked?

Was offered a family of four ticket for 52 quid for this match - RFU take note.

England v Fiji - ?45 for an adult to watch a World Cup warm up match vs a Tier 2 nation. Laughable. Lots of tickets available and doesn't look like they've opened the Upper Tier.

Just under 50k at Murrayfield, even in the 6 nations Italy tickets are a slow seller so for a world cup warm up game that's pretty good.

Danny Cips for those who may not be familiar with his Wasps' nick name ;) His autobiography "Who am I?" is out on September 14th .

Could be an interesting read if he's being open and honest.

As an aside, I see Viaplay are in big trouble and pulling out the UK market, not good for the URC

It feels more and more like it's 1, or at least 1 for this next season.

After that maybe it's 3 or 4.

There seem to be comments occasionally form Scriv's Pudsey etc that it's not over but it's becoming harder to have any faith.

I guess the interesting thing will be what happens to Irish, as they are done from the Prem, but with deadlines set and missed for Wasps, they can't give them a new later deadline so I can't see how they can join the Championship, so are they the same as Wasps or are they being given a lifeline for the following season?

last I saw they were looking to extend their time there to allow the rebuild at their own training ground

What a surprise, if I was BT Sport I would be doing the same, this is a vast amount of booked airtime for next, and this past, seasons that is now empty and they need to find something else to fill it.

I've seen comments from a Tiggers fan saying they will still be able to show as many matches as they didn't show them all anyway, completely missing the fact in a 13 team league there are 26 playing weekends, whilst in a 10 team league there are only 18. Both then have the additional 2 for semi's and Final.

So with 3 live matches per weekend and approx 4hrs of live broadcast per match plus a few extra hours of highlights and Rugby tonight, they could be losing around 16hrs of broadcasting per weekend.
Based on 16hrs per weekend their total (excluding finals) is 416hrs with 13 teams, 288hrs with 10 teams.
I'd be looking for a big rebate.

This is what the Prem 10 seem to forget, the broadcast money won't stay the same when the number of hours and weekends greatly reduces.

I agree, any league where the winner is a foregone conclusion is boring.  I done get the hype around the Premier league in football. Man City are way ahead of the rest and will win again next year.  Interestingly they have also been charged with financial doping, and like Saracens, are likely to get away more or less scot free. And they media just ignore that and continue to fawn over them.

Football won't suffer if Man City continue to win year after year, the media will see to that and it is more likely to help the lower leagues as proper fans seek proper football.  Rugby doesn't have that luxury,

This is the over riding issue. Teams come and go and dominate, whatever the sport, look at F1, there are many era's where certain teams dominate, people will make boring comments and the fans of said teams will be happy,

the issue with the 2 premier leagues and ships is the fact teams have cheated their way to the top, that being the case people who support the other teams will be very unhappy, a different situation to teams who dominate legally.

Rugby is a mess because of that team cheating and other teams running at their max to try and keep up, I was surprised to hear Irish were closest to the cap in recent years (all be it a soft cap, or flexible if you are sarries). Also the fact they cheated, got found out but still kept their tainted titles, still the media and certain fans think they were hard done by.
Going back to F1, the year Schumacher tried to take out Villeneuve to win the championship, he had his championship finish null and voided, he kept the wins, which were largely fair and square but not his second place in the championship after he tried to cheat his way to the win.

Thanks for the link, it's not great from their owner.

From what I've read the fans were fully behind the owner, sounds like that has now been well and truly tarnished.
