This guy talks a lot of sense.

In the current climate, he is the right guy to lead the business through very turbulent times.

It must have been fortunate for Wasps that Stuart Cain may have already decided to jump ship to a new job as CEO of Warks CCC, as serious redundancy £££ may have been in the offing.

Really like listening to Vaughan, talks a lot of sense and it’s clear why Gloucester folk hold him in such high regard.
Also pleased our approach now is to focus on a solid squad in unity with quality coaching that pushes us on as a squad rather than bringing in glacticos. Whilst I love those days of Beale WLR etc throwing it around, I think most of us here wanted a slightly different approach and it looks like we’ll be focused on that way now

The thing about the galactico era I enjoyed was the style, the high scoring, not the names.  There is no reason why we can't replicate that with our current approach. Indeed, the last few games bought those high scoring TBP days back with a bang. Hopefully there won't be enough support for the Bristol position. Sarries, Bristol, Bath I guess would be obvious ones to watch, maybe Sale? That might be enough to scupper common sense.

I have a feeling common sense will be scuppered. Exeter appear against it too.

Chiefs would be an issue. Mind you, I have always felt their sponsorship deal to be dubious. Maybe if the others voted against that kind of arrangement their tune would change.

Yes touted as the only club in the black but only because of Tony Rowe's heavy sponsorship.

This makes me a little uncomfortable. We have to be honest and accept we were 100% culpable in the rapid inflation of wages post 2015, including big money marquees. We didn’t seem concerned at the time that the likes of Wuss, Sale, Newcastle and others couldn’t keep up with the big spending of the top 4/5 clubs.

Err welcome to the forum! Perhaps introducing yourself would be a good idea before making a critical post against our club?

Precisely what I mean.

The cap was increased after the breaches were swept under the carpet, in an attempt to keep certain clubs sweet. Wasps were the last standouts in an attempt to insist that a full investigation take place and be made public.

I'll not hold anything against any club for spending upto the cap. I will hold plenty against those who've repeatedly and deliberately broken the cap, and place the blame firmly at their doorstep.

So you hold Saracens entirely to blame for the wage inflation that has left nearly every club in the league operating at a loss?

Nope. I hold Bath equally to blame as Sarries, and then have no doubt that numerous other clubs hold some culpability in accepting the money that those clubs paid out for them to keep their silence. I'm quite pleased about the fact that Wasps were refusing it and wanting a proper investigation. I believe Harlequins shared our position too.

I disagree with SV that reducing the overall levels of the cap would, on balance, be good for the league. While there are still multiple clubs willing and able to spend up to it then it should remain as is imo. I don’t think that’s me being critical of the club.

In fact, I would praise our management for clearly making some sensible business decisions over the last 12 months or so to reduce our budget to more affordable levels. And as we saw over the latter part of this season it’s certainly possible to still compete on a reduced wage spend.

If the cap stays just as high we end up with a couple of situations in my mind.

A) Most clubs cut their cloth, a few still spend big, and the league becomes a lot less interesting due to less competitiveness.

B) Clubs continue as they are, and we risk having some large casualties as clubs go bust. They will claim they can't afford not to spend, since getting into the top 6 (and top 4 etc) is worth so much money to them, that they'd be risking more by not spending big. Which is where we are now.

And B is the trap that too many fall into. In a 12 team league, then even with everyone spending right up to the cap and splashing out big on marquee players, only half are ever going to make top 6, two thirds will not be in the play offs and as things stand one will find themselves playing the following season against Ampthill, Jersey and Doncaster rather than Clermont, Toulouse and Leinster.

So as long as there's a handful of rich owners willing to continue ploughing more and more of their own cash into otherwise totally unsustainable rugby clubs, then the pragmatic majority just has to suck it up??
I think you may have missed the point of the salary cap.

It is a trap, but without spending you more or less guarantee you won't make it.
