Well that took a while to confirm.
Welcome John.

Good news.

Great signing, long delay on this, perhaps down to Munster waiting to announce a replacement.
Saw JTAs wife on her Instagram back in NZ for a wedding and whilst out for lunch, said something along the lines of ‘will be able to do this more when I’m home’. If JTA is heading back to NZ he could go straight back on time for some ITM and then wait for super rugby until after Christmas so maybe no announcement will come on him until a list of departing players is named.
Alo signed a new deal last year so assumed he’ll stay as well as Millar-Mills as 4th choice TH but wonder if having Scholtz is one prop too many on the wage bill.

BB comments.
Wasps sign Munster prop John Ryan ahead of 2022/23 Gallagher Premiership season
He follows Vincent Koch who agreed a move from Saracens

Dang that's some serious depth at tighthead. Our forward pack is looking pretty fantastic going into next season.

Sure is - being a warmth to the heart of this old prop. and indeed - out front 5 is looking excellent. The front row looks to have more going for it than one or two international teams....!!!
-
Wonder if this week with no game might be the information release week.
Sounded like ST were upcoming so they need news to get people interested.

So front row roster next season is possibly
TH : Koch, Ryan, Alo, Miller-Mills
Hooker : Cruse, Oghre, Frost
LH : West, Harris, Hislop
Have I missed anyone?

Martinez at LH.

Is Van Vuuren likely to be retained? Perfect 4th choice guy in my opinion and we need 4 hookers.
So either we take on another youngster as
Eckersley still has 2 more years at uni, or a first choice Championship player who’s happy to come in as 4th choice with us

The last championship hooker we took on is mounting a serious challenge to be first choice IMO ;D

For me Frost has been a great signing, who is still very young and is likely to improve a lot more. For me already 1st choice

Frosty edges it for me. If he hadn't been out injured for a few weeks, I think he would have already cemented the #1 spot.

Quality signing, adding more steel to our front row options. We will be very a powerful scrummaging side which seems to be a pre-requisite for any team with Top 4 ambitions.
Yeehah 🐝👏⭐️💥

I think the key upside is taking the officiating as much out of the equations as possible. Even if we need to hold the opposition up due to some dodgy officiating - it's worth it to get regular, clean, quick ball on our own put in.
-
It may not be intentional but some refs will look at our front row and award pens based on that - it happens.
-
Ryan at 33 and Koch at 32 could be very beneficial for eachother here in extending their careers.
Koch plays a hell of a lot of minutes for Sarries accompanied with the rigours of international rugby. Together they can rotate easily and we do not lose a lot at all.
There is still plenty of rugby for Alo and M-M to have as well as Hardwick coming through on that side.
They are two certified winners as well so will bring that mentality and culture with them. Hope we have them on two year deals at least.
-
There could be a minimum of 2 extra league games next season plus the expectation of making it in to the latter stages of the European Championship means that depth is needed. Looking at it the other way round, you need that depth to succeed in the latter stages of the European Championship and to make the top 4 of the Premiership. So yes, plenty of game time for all.

I see this as Blackett saying that he can sort the backs out with minimal recruitment, providing the forward pack is dominant.
We see at other clubs that a dominant pack can make some comparatively average back lines look very good.
We also know that Blackett's primary role in the past has been a skills/backs/attack coach.
On paper, we should have a very very strong forward pack next season.
Not just a strong scrummaging unit, but one that should be strong in open play and at the breakdown too.
If that does translate to our half backs getting a fraction more time at each play, then we have no excuses if our backs struggle to create much next season.
I look forward to seeing the results

It's how England were doing there recent best before they started trying to get too funky.....Most sides, club or international, can place themselves at an advantage by having a solid set piece, a dynamic back row and options to take ball forwards. I think that Wasps have been at their best when the pack has delivered, back in the day and indeed on our run to the Prem final
It's part of the frustration with England that they reject the basics and appear surprised by the outcomes....If we can secure our power up front - then a lot of the rest falls into place.

Tim Payne was always much maligned by referees. Double yellow in one game.

Does anyone think this is the a singular signing or do we think more to be announced? Came out the blue a little even though we all thought this was a done deal.

I'm not sure about if we'll get some announcements this week or not, but can I say after Alo re-signed I assumed John Ryan rumour wasn't true because it was such insane depth at tighthead. So didn't think it was an absolute given he'd signed. Glad I was wrong there.

Given there have been comments form Lee saying other signing had been made but not announced I would expect some more. Hopefully announced as part of a strategy to encourage season ticket sales?

Having confirmed the signings of Koch, Ryan, Odendaal and Kiran McDonald (and the academy upgrades) l think next season's squad looks terrific so can't imagine many more coming through the door.
Because I'm greedy, Haydon-Wood would be a real bonus and perhaps one more centre eg Piers O'Connor?

Greed is good ;D

definitely wouldn't mind another centre, also would like Josh Bassett to get back to form, he just can't buy a try at the moment
-
Blackett spoke last week about wanting another ‘hard running back’ but also how we were pretty well set at 12 for next year so assume not a 12.
-
Pretty well set at 12?
We may have plenty of 12s on the books but we haven't had a game changer there for a while.

I'm inclined to agree. Whilst Odendaal and Hartley (in particular Hartley) look promising, I'm really not sure that's enough. We also have Simonds who's potentially good, and Mills who's made of glass. Really not confident.
-
Flip it round though. Exclude Esterhuizen and where are the game changing 12’s?? I certainly can’t think of many. England don’t have any. Odendaal/Hartley/Mills/Le Bourgeois might be as good as most get.

Tbf that's a good point about game changing 12's. I guess it's because Gopperth has been so so good over the years it's difficult to replace.
That said Odendaal jury's out until he's here, Hartley/Simonds potentially good but unproven, Le Bourgeois is someone who's hinted at quality but mainly ok, and Mills is perfect apart from injury rate. So yeah, a lot depending on Odendaal, Hartley and Simonds. My money is on Hartley weirdly enough.
-
We've also had Ben Jacobs in the past who was excellent for us at 12, without really being a stand out name.
We don't need a Ma'a Nonu or a Tana Umaga.
We just need someone who fits with whatever our game plan at 12 will be next season.
