Title: Match Thread
Post by: Neils on December 04, 2021, 01:23:45 PM
OK another day another game.

Hopefully no last minute changes this week. The team that trained gets to play the game - please.

Hope all going have/had a safe journey.

COYW.

This is going to be very tight - played out on the awful plastic. We have to hope no-one in the back division gets injured. Great to have the scrummaging ability of West back. Get ready for a nail biter.

Umaga brushed aside like you would swat a fly. A cardboard cutout would have done better. Score at half time is flattering to Wasps.

How many times when things break up with a potential knock on or similar do the wasps players just stop.

Umaga also missed the last touch kick from his 25, to gift Wuss their third try. It's his 3rd missed touch and just too many.
Feel for the lad but match after match this is crucifying the team as no.10 is the lynchpin

Whilst possibly being covid-averse the missing of tackles is worrying.
Title: Re: Match Thread
Post by: Shugs on December 04, 2021, 03:55:22 PM
Too many errors. Not doing the basics and loads of pens. That’s pretty poor. Defence has been ok. The forwards must be tearing their hair out with our backs - just do the basics.

Vailanu never played like that when he was with us.  Why is it that we get players who don't perform for us and then go elsewhere and do good things?  Alapati was another.  Also a number of hopefuls we signed, some of who never even made appearances for us, it seems to me.

Since last week's thread, I have been watching him carefully. Worcester are targeting him and Porter with as much pressure as they can muster, and they both look harried and nervous. Good tactic by Worcester. To explain, almost every set piece the movement is to assume we have earned the right to go wide. We haven't, not by a long stretch. It makes it easy to defend when you do the same thing over and over. Simply drift wide and clobber the outside centre or winger.

And as for Kibirige. He simply runs at someone and falls over. Not even at speed. Watson confirms my view he is gone after this season. Our backs, right now, with the exception of Bassett and Gopperth, are simply not playing even slightly well. I do not count McHenry, as he is not really part of our squad, and isn't doing so badly.

Can't wait for Robson, Fekitoa, Crossdale, Odogwu and Atkinson is all I can say.

What we be an improvement, the second half? I seriously doubt it. At this rate we might get more than 8 tries put on us at this rate.

More pens. More mistakes. No basics. 32-14. Worcester have had this handed to them.

Blew it in the 1st half, we controlled Van Der Merwe in the 2nd half and actually had some good spells, but too many times it ends with a spilled ball.
A number of players working hard, Willis, Bassett, Frost all played very well, the 2 9's did okay but we are missing Robson to get the control.
Not sure what we need to do at 10. Too many missed touch, too may loose passes, but some good play at times, it's the inconsistency that needs sorting out. I think we would be seeing Charlie more if he was fit.

So what excuse can we roll out this week. Tired players? Injuries? We were unlucky? Or will it be oh the boys put everything in and were unlucky in the end, they never gave up, we could have nicked it at the end. This sums us up let’s give teams a massive lead and then try and claw it back. It’s just not good enough

Listened to it on the radio. Very poor.

It sounds like Jacob didn’t tighten up his game and made silly mistakes again. I heard McHenry mentioned once and Kibirige probably three times. Our backs are poor.

You don't have to make kicks from far out wide if you don't let the opposition have a free go at scoring for half the game. It was like watching one of those comedy dad's games with little kids as van de Meuwre ran his tries in, with players diving randomly in or out of his way.

Whether you agree or not, VDM is an international and Lions winger. Kept him pretty well shackled in the 2nd half but by then the damage was done :-[

Lol, classy.

The fact is that the team we put out had plenty of ability. It was at least as good as the team that put Sarries to the sword not so long ago.

I suggested that Jacob was not hitting his potential and was repeatedly told it wasn't his fault. His mistakes were all down to not having a good enough pack, or an injured 12.

He, like many others, are playing well under their potential and I don't agree that if we just carry on the same way as we have all season it will magically improve.

We have some brilliant players, many of whom were in that squad. If we aren't allowed to discuss why things may be going wrong there is little point in having a site dedicated to discussing the team.

Completely agree Vespula. There is a clear distinction for me. Anyone who wears the shirt gets unconditional 100% backing but that doesn’t mean we can’t discuss their performances. Every player is giving their all but we’re not good enough right now in the absolute basics.

Happy to discuss. However, I'm not sure that posters, and I certainly didn't say "it wasn't his fault." In the main, my impression was - and what I said - that posters felt that there were mitigating circumstances that made playing well harder.

So - if we get on the same page I'd be more than happy to discuss the form/input of any player.

Colin Allen was a back row signed as injury cover 20 years ago. Was pretty dreadful at his best and we never saw him at his best. He was released after a season and the general expectation was his career would go downhill fast. He proved the expectation right and joined the British Bobsleigh team.

Last seen as a strength and conditioning coach in Italy

The one thing that was novel in yesterday’s game was that we got penalised for not hooking at the scrum. Presume this means we must have put the ball in reasonably straight.

For all the doom and gloom merchants on here I should point out that Colin Allan was an emergency signing along with our saviour in 2001-2 season, Ian Jones, due to a significant injury crisis, including a long term injury to our captain Lol. We had to use a lot of younger squad players too. A bit like this season maybe?

The fact is we won the Premiership the following 3 seasons after that and bagged 2 European trophies too!

As a squad, those who emerge alive after a year like this come out the other side as hardened veterans. But, I suspect we will see quite an attrition rate, of players who will not get a new contract.
Title: Re: Match Thread
Post by: Shugs on December 05, 2021, 01:07:43 PM
Do you think so. I have mentally got Mills, Watson, Minozzi and Vukasinovic down in my head as very unlikely. In the could be at risk I suppose I’d put in Fekitoa (maybe his choice), Alo and possibly Scholtz depending on the length of deal he signed. I worry for the likes of Spink and Simonds who can’t seem to stay injury free and we know we are losing Young. Not sure Hougaard has signed for more than a year either. I suppose on reflection that is quite a big list.
Title: Re: Match Thread
Post by: mike909 on December 05, 2021, 01:22:31 PM
Re centres - I think the plan seemed to be that first choice would be Mills and Fek with Booj and and Jimmy providing cover and "horses for courses" selections - allowing rotation at 10 and 12 especially. With Odogwu coming through, it would have allowed more rotation and further selection for specific purposes.

We've struggled with player fitness over the last several years meaning Booj got stick too often (it seemed to me....) for being available and having to play before acclimatised to the Prem. And Jimmy has had to play too many games when I think we'd have wanted him to be edging towards a player/coach role (or similar)

Going forwards, we look like we will need two centres as Mills looks fragile and Fek is prob off and perhaps a winger and FB cover too if we perhaps lose Minozzi and prob Watson? It will be v helpful if and when Miller and Odogwu return ditto Robson and we prob need Crossdale regularly fit and delivering too.

But any team will struggle with 18 first team squad injuries merely with rotation and familiar combinations. If we learn the game management lessons that such problems teach then it will be positive going forwards.

Fair enough. Though the academy guys need to get game time soon. I like Crossdale a lot, but I suppose my selfish thinking is just how Le Roux, Piutau and Beale made us so much more dangerous!

Suppose it’s like anywhere else on the pitch. If Crossdale, Miller and Mehson are fit we’re fine at FB. The same with Bassett and Kibirige. If not you’re dipping in to the youngsters. The flip side is you sign someone else and the youngsters get no game time!

At the start of the season I voiced my concerns about the hooker position. I said cruse couldn’t play every game, Gaby wasn’t good enough and we just didn’t know about Frost. How wrong I was and how pleased I am to admit it. Gaby seems to have ironed out his errors and is at the moment very consistent, Frost is a revelation and must be pushing to be first choice and Cruse is as dependable as ever just unlucky with his concussions. Oh to be so stocked in other positions.
