Wasps Rugby Discussion / Kent!
« on: October 23, 2023, 04:04:30 PM »
https://wasps.co.uk/club-announcements/wasps-announces-plans-for-new-stadium-development-in-kent/

The club is actively engaged with Sevenoaks District Council to identify a suitable location and ensure that the development meets both the needs of the club and the broader community.

Building on the rich 156-year history of Wasps, this move signifies a new chapter in the club's journey, reaffirming its commitment to professional rugby. In a statement on 17 October the club discussed its strategic journey since October 2022. Having faced significant challenges with regulation and funding, the club has persisted with its determination to revive Wasps at the highest possible level.

As the development progresses through its planning stages, Wasps will be actively exploring temporary facilities to underpin its operations in Kent. Whilst determined to establish a base in the southeast of England, the club has also agreed an option of utilising Worcester Warriors? Sixways ground for both training and playing purposes, without in anyway replacing Worcester Warriors RFC and indeed committed to assisting their return to competitive rugby.

A Wasps spokesperson said: "The journey of Wasps has been one of passion, resilience, and commitment to the game. Our determination to secure a new, sustainable future for the club has never been stronger. By working with Sevenoaks District Council, we hope to build a long-lasting legacy that acknowledges our storied past and charts an ambitious future.

...

As a Cov Wasps fan, that's a hell of a trek for "home games"!

Well, a welcome update which tells us nothing concrete other than "we're still working on it".

For which I am grateful of course - that people are committed and real time and effort (and presumably cold, hard cash) is being expended on something many of us may have thought was dead.

Asks more questions than it answers, possibly. When? Where? Who?

It's a chink of light at the end of a particularly dark, bleak tunnel though.

Tibo starts for France against the ABs on Friday.  Congrats to him - go well.

In a similar vein, Paolo is on the bench for the Azzuri against Namibia. So pleased for him.

The URC angle is intriguing. I seem to remember one of the Wasps announcements just after admin saying something like (I paraphrase) "we'll be back, but it might not be under the RFU". Can't find the exact piece I'm thinking of though.

That was what my mind went to. It was a club statement on 18 May headlined 'Our exit from the Rugby Football Union'.

Exactly that. Well played. Better memory skills than mine, clearly.

Highlighted in Facebook?

?As an aside, we have also been informed that there has been interest from a former owner of Wasps RFC in buying Sixways with the intention of trying to run a URC franchise at the stadium.?

Saw this too. Interesting. I'm assuming CH is the "former owner".

Might be a merger with one of the ailing Welsh regions being floated? Worcester is close-ish to the border!

Yeah, great news. Forza!

Buggered about by Eddie, Eng training camps and then discarded. Now he's off the RWC.

Brilliant stuff for him.

I think one of the big differences here is that England actually challenged the decision to issue the red card.

Normally the player / union will plead guilty and the punishment will be reduced as a result; challenging the issuance of the card itself is very rare as you run the risk of an increased ban.

It look like, in this case, England decided the likely ban would be 4-5 games, and the risk of an additional one was worth the risk of rolling the dice and challenging the red card.

Couple that with expensive legal representation and a panel possibly inclined to lenience anyway and it becomes feasible.

NB. I'm not defending the approach - it was a red card all day long.

Is this a SH versus NH view of his actions.

Potentially? I've seen some SH citings overturned where NH would normally ban... the fact the panel was (all?) Australian might point to that.

Makes the whole consistency question more pertinent then...

Also massively undermines the new "bunker" review system.

They have 10 mins to make a proper decision in terms of affecting the game - and then are found not to have done so. Farrell should not have been red carded, should have come back on after 10 mins and restored England to 15 (I think, at that point).

Complete cock up.

Everyone waiting with expectation for the first RC for a high tackle in the RWC now....

Or a player listed as "unattached", I think.

I remember Jason Robinson was "unattached" in 2007

You're absolutely right - still listed as such on the Wikipedia page, too:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_Rugby_World_Cup_squads

I'm of the same mind about the squad, really. Pretty "meh". Still big questions over first choice half backs, despite there being three of each.

I've also heard the rumour that Tom is training reserve. Given Billy's fitness record I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Tom called into the squad before the tournament starts.

With the RWC squad being announced on Monday, I reckon it's safe to assume Jack is already inked in.

Likewise Arundell, Farrell etc.

This looks like a last-gasp opportunity for some to grab a spot.

Forza Paolo.

Tom Willis on the bench for England. With the RWC squad announced on Monday he's probably got to put it about when he gets on.

Big shake up at Racing.

Christian extends his contract.

Will Rowlands in.

Stuart Lancaster in.

Paul Stridgeon in.

............

They've also signed Henry Arundell. Got some pace in the backs.

The big signing is Siya Kolisi. Interesting they've not gone for a high-profile 10 to replace Finn Russel, instead bringing in the South Africa Tristan Tedder from Perpignan.
