Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: The Future

Does that mean he now owns the stadium?

Apparently.

So now owns 2 of the 3 bust clubs.

Almost like that is exactly what some of us predicted was his endgame when he made the deal for Wasps to play at sixways.

Cameron Anderson has signed for Quins from LS.

As a LS fan, pretty gutted but he was far too good to be playing semi-pro championship rugby

Stephen Jones tweeted that another club will likely go within a week.

Also Wasps quoted 232 players and 37 coaches available which I would suggest is based on actual numbers made jobless in recent times.

To be fair Stephen Jones also wrote an article about the crowds at this week's London 7s last week

I have wonderful memories from our Wasp days, however I felt the loss of our club when it initially folded, not now.

This feels like the right decision for me. We are rightly starting from the lowest level. Weirdly I am pleased as too many great historic clubs such as Richmond, Rugby, Coventry were given no truck when professionalism came and nor should we.

Yep. London scottish as well. Its 100 percent possible with patience and the right backing and support.

I doubt you'll ever see a prpfessional wasps club in yhe premiership again but if they can do what those clubs did they might actually find themselves becoming a properly sustainable community club at an appropriate level.

It's not just the DoR and players - it's the entire back room staff that would need to be put in place to support a professional rugby team, Doctors, medics, coaching staff, analysts, groundsmen, ticket office staff, match day security etc etc. And with no DOR in place they have noone to drive any of that.

Signing 30 random players with no plan is a recipe for disaster- they need a DoR in place with a vision and a strategy, and they have very little time to do it. I'd almost argue that getting a DoR in to drive all of that is almost more important than the ground situation, especially is solihull is a legitimate backup with rfu approval. If recruitment doesn't begin till after the May meeting, I'd argue it's actually too late at that point.

No wonder there were rumours the owners asked the rfu for a year's reprieve. If I was a betting man I wouldn't be putting any money on wasps being in the championship next year - it's nothing more than a pipe dream at the moment.

I'd have thought it would be a pretty easy one to get around even if a court found in favour of the players, considering selection for England is entirely subjective and down to the head coach. They could still just unofficially select only players playing in England (where the majority play) and who can prove otherwise that's not the 'best selection' considering its down to the head coach and 95% of rugby fans would disagree with who he selects regardless

Suspect quite a few of the signings will also be from championship or national one clubs.

Most players in the league are on shorter term deals, and there's normally plenty of movement between clubs at the end of the year - though that depends on how late wasps decide to leave it.

One of the things wasps will need is a bit of 'dog', your experienced championship players who have never quite made it to premiership level but have the required experience in the league. Some will be semi pro or amateur so won't break the bank.

For this to work you are going to need a thriving Championship at the very least.

Which simply doesn't exist with the lack of funding, lack of interest from sponsors and tv companies, and general all round dismissal from the rfu.

Gopps leaving Leicester - player/coach role with us perhaps? 2 birds 1 stone.

Interesting, I guess everyone's assumption was the reason he left Wasps was down to the 2 year playing contract and potential coaching role.

Potentially a year deal with an option for an extension that tigers didnt activate? Don't think tigers fans were particularly miffed to see him go as he hasnt been great for them. Time catches up with everyone I suppose - even someone as ageless as Jimmy!

If that is correct & Chris Holland has enabled the Atlas buyout to go ahead, that is NOT the same as just renting a stadium that would have remained empty otherwise.

Personally I am not comfortable with that at all.

Spot on. The whole thing stinks and sounds like a total stitch up.

I'd be seething if I was a Warriors fan, and its no surprise that the general sympathy across the sportnetwork messages boards is with them, while sympathy for wasps is withering (if it was even there at all).

If Holland has actively helped Atlas buy the club so Wasps can get a free stadium (a sale to Atlas which has effectively killed Worcester) then I hope Holland is prepared for new Wasps to become quickly the most hated club around.

We've been going to Trailfinders since the demise, and, yes, it can be a bit boring.

I made my first visit there for Scottish's game this season (where I've been going since Wasps went to Coventry). Was quite boring for me too with teh 50-nil scoreline in Ealings favour  :D

Was quite funny to watch England getting thrashed by France in the Ealing bar afterwards though!

Yeah, but who won the Championship this season - not Ealing.

Yep of course. Still think it would be incredibly dull being an Ealing fan regardless - where 80% of your games arent even competitive

The Ruck reckons Biyi to Trailfinders?

Saw that elsewhere but can't remember where. Also Jordy Reid to them. Building.

And RFU still wont let them up if they win the league next year. Must be so odd being an Ealing fan - knowing youll tonk everyone bar maybe 1/2 teams at the top by 50+ points every single week but can never progress beyond that level.

We (scottish) hammered richmond 49-3 in our relegation battle yesterday with a back line where 12-15 have all played for wasps at some point (simonds, Anderson, mehson and ingall).

No idea what their contract status is but a wasps phoenix club could do a lot worse than looking to resign Anderson and mehson who have been our best 2 backs by a mile this season - and far too good to be pottering around at the bottom of the table with us.

Yep, i said it on another thread the other day - the RFU despises the championship and would much rather it just went away.

I've supported/attended games at a championship club since wasps moved to coventry - its a great league, but one with plenty of frustrations at the governing body and how little they care about it/want to help it grow. The whole organisation and lack of clarity on promotion relegation is also a joke - I'm attending what is in essence our relegation play off this weekend. Absolutely huge game for both clubs but could all be irrelevant, as the RFU hasn't even confirmed if there is relegation next season. Its farcical.
