Title: The Pitch
Post by: Vespula Vulgaris on August 13, 2020, 11:05:08 AM
I was lucky enough to be at The Ricoh yesterday, and I managed a quick look at the pitch.

The groundstaff are certainly earning their money, it is looking amazing.

Excellent news. It certainly looked very green from the long distance photo put up a week or two back.

Getting a lot of rain today in the whole area, so hopefully both the Ricoh and Franklins Gardens are getting a bit softer.

I'd have happily played on it the way it was. It wasn't hard and dry at all. I suspect it has been heavily irrigated throughout the hot weather.

The pitch always looks good at this time of year.

Unlike other shared pitches eg Bristol Bears/City I’m not confident it stands up to the demands and pressures of scrummaging etc.

The Ricoh pitch was relayed just before the seson kicked off, it didn't really have time to settle, hence why it ripped up a bit last year.

However, it has not been used since early March & hasn't had concerts on it this year so I'd expect it to be in the best condition it has ever been.

Do they grow the grass a bit longer when there is no football being played on it? My memory of school rugby is of grass halfway up to my knees!

Just checked the respective rules.  Football grass cannot exceed 30mm in length.  Can't see anything in the rugby laws that stipulates grass length, just that "The playing surface must be safe" and "The permitted surface types are grass, sand, clay, snow or artificial turf"

I agree, my memories are of playing in longer grass, and with no roundball I'd like to see the Ricoh pitch a little longer.

Definitely longer than 30mm, but it could be getting a trim before next week.
