Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: It might not be over

Journalistic sensationalism aside this is probably no different to the way the Premier 15s works. Of course the devil will be in the detail and I've zero expectations in the RFU.

Unfortunately I think it is. A minimum requirement in the new tender process included developing a professional coaching resource to support players in training throughout the week so just look at some the teams for 23/24: Bristol Bears Women, Exeter Rugby Club, Ealing Trainfinders Women, Gloucester-Hartpury Women?s RFC , Harlequins FC, Leicester Tigers, Loughborough Lightning/Northampton Saints, Sale Women, Saracens. Worcester are the odd ones out.

The rugby in the Championship this year has been outstanding. This weekend is Ealing v Jersey, a title battle with winner takes nothing, and at the other end of the table Richmond v London Scottish, a relegation battle with loser stays where they are as the RFU haven't yet decided whether there will be relegation or not.  Add in Nat 1 where Rams, Sale and Cambridge are within 5 points of each other at the top and Cambridge have a game in hand.

This is the rugby I want to watch and the Premiership and England can go hang.

Any actual idea when the Championship matches start in 23/24.

After the World Cup I believe. During the World Cup are the pool stages of the Premiership/Championship Cup.

7
Yes, I think that would very likely happen.

As for killing pro rugby in England, possibly, but then what do teams outside the premiership get now from TV deals? If this went ahead money the RFU currently use to prop up the premiership could be diverted elsewhere.

My guess would be a premiership run along the lines of the Premier 15s. Clubs are invited to apply and must provide an assured bond of ?25/30/35m for 3/5/7 (whatever) years. Probably 8 teams so no games during international windows and no salary cap. If they get TV coverage they keep the money. In effect a franchised league.

I could begrudgingly accept this provided it was not supported by central RFU funding in any way. That should go entirely to the remaining clubs and grass roots rugby to provide a proper meritocratic pyramid. Let the sugar daddies play together and we can all ignore them.

I'm beginning to think we need a sugar daddy league where they can do what they like with wage caps etc and which they can ring fence if they want, but no bail outs or other money from the RFU, and then for what is now the Championship to become the top of a meritocratic pyramid.

This.

8 franchised teams managed in the same way as the Premier 15s. Completely ringfenced and guaranteed financially by sugar daddies.

This is all a bit radical but in my opinion no news is because the RFU/PRL are completely clueless. They will continue with false platitudes and do nothing. This season I expect no promotion from the Championship, next season no Wasps or Worcester in the Championship and in the meantime 2 or 3 more premiership teams to go into administration.

My prediction (and I stress it's only a prediction) is that this is what the RFU/PRL want. The next Professional Game Agreement, due in 2024, will be announced with a massive fanfare as a completely ring fenced professional league of 8 teams with no salary cap,  will take the majority of funding and will be controlled by sugar daddies. It will be lauded as the saviour of english rugby (England). The RFU will pay lip service to the Championship - maybe 2 conferences of 8 semi-professional teams each. There will be token funding. Wasps, Worcester plus those who have fallen by the wayside in the meantime will be "allowed" back then.

I hope to God I'm wrong.
