Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Wasps update February 2024
« on: March 01, 2024, 09:43:54 AM »
I'm keen to see Wasps resurrected. And the URC would be an interesting prospect.

It offers some interesting challenges for a new the new entity, new fans may be more difficult to engage in a non domestic league. Attracting away fans makes the location even more important, firstly good transport links and a nearby airport, second an away weekend to an industrial estate near a motorway is no where near as attractive as a weekend in Dublin, Cardiff, Edinburgh etc.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Inews article - where did they all end up

The article says Will Simonds is at Chinnor. Although that is where he signed at initially he's been at London Scottish since mid way through last season.

Seems like they want to squeeze more money from a rapidly diminishing fan base (which will then likely shrink further an faster).

The stench of CVC is very strong with this one. F1 only recovered when CVC moved on.

Wales play as 4 teams and have not had a good few years.
France have many and have.
SA have players from all over and still look great.
Methinks too many here in England are seduced by the Irish model.

Exactly this. The Irish model is fine for them, but there is no ambition to grow the game. France have 3 or 4 professional leagues. Top 14 and Pro d2 are already 30 teams. More fans = more engagement = more revenue.

On top of that I would rather watch French Rugby over Irish (domestic or international)

For this to work the existing Prem teams need to be accept a short term financial hit in exchange for the long term improvement. It's been done before in NRL and NFL but whether the current cartel would be willing to accept  it is another thing.

Interesting, Sounds similar to the Welsh system too.

As much as I appreciate the effectiveness of the Irish system, I would rather English rugby replicated something similar to what has happened in France where the domestic game is growing alongside International success.

I think Searle was brought in as world cup cover before the injury

I see from the results that Pau were 10 all at half time, Dobby came on at 47 mins and they won 40-10...

Just checked in on the Provence website to see how Jimmy did this week, not on the score sheet. And they had a much closer match against Nevers 37-34. But I see they had over 6000 on a Thursday night to watch 2nd tier rugby! (I think it would have been televised too).

The RFU and PRL needs to take notice. Growing the pie needs to be the priority.
