It wasn't sustainable before Covid, and it isn't now.

This is the best gloss each club can put on the numbers, with a lot of jiggery pokery going on.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: We all knew this but from others it hurts

I may be in the minority but I have been watching Prem games & the quality is high & the rugby exciting. No its not the same when you don't have a team that you support involved, but its still worth watching IMO.
Sadly if Wasps hadn't gone under I think they would have continued to bump along at the bottom end of the table.

Personally I wonder how many of those ex-wasps players who are shining in their new clubs would have been blocked from getting game time by players who are now only squad players at their new clubs? Especially the younger ones. We will never know

Same. Although, the excitement is not there. I am enjoying watching the womens 6 Nations.

We now go to watch Ealing, and the black clouds of  crumb that constantly rise from the pitch really make you wonder how healthy they can be for the players.

Not!

There is no total proof it is carcinogenic, so to the RFU it is OK.

Just like lead in petrol. cigarettes, asbestos, repeatedly being knocked out with head injuries (just chuck a bucket of water on it).

Given the number of such pitches in use in schools,  community sports facilities, the cost of replacement will be horrendous, so better to ignore the problem until the lawsuits roll in, and then bleat that 'nobody told us'.

The Dutch banned these pitches years ago.

Caterpillars form because the opposing player can get so close to scrag the scrum half. My view is that players not properly bound and within a metre or so (maybe even well back, like at lineouts) of the back foot of the maul/breakdown should be deemed offside.

Where does Wade currently sit in the all time top try scorers table?

I think he is 5th:

1 Chris Ashton ? 101
2 Tom Varndell ? 92
3 Mark Cueto ? 90
4 Danny Care ? 85
5 Christian Wade ? 82
6 Jonny May ? 76
7 Steve Hanley ? 75
8 Matt Banahan ? 71
9 Mike Brown ? 70
10 Paul Sackey ? 69

I will probably equate them with MG cars. Although they share a name and badge, he current, Chinese, MG cars are no more related to the original MGs than the new Wasps will be to the Wasps teams I supported.

In the case of MG, that probably isn't a bad thing. Similarly, what made the final 'team' Wasps? It wasn't the ground, so that isn't at issue.

Oddly, it WAS the fans, sitting next to the same people week in and out. Moving such a long way to Kent, there is the possibility that many will know each other (by face if nothing else). But some, like me, will be missing except for the occasional away game that brings the match into travel range.

The back room staff? Lower down the order on the payscale, I doubt that they could afford to move to the South East. I doubt many who live around Coventry could make that move, property prices being what they are in Kent.

So, only the top staff, coaches, trainers maybe.

Players? Some might sign up. What level of skills and fitness would be needed, who knows? Likely a lower level than would be needed in the Premiership.

Too many variables. But, a hint of what Wasps is and were, a whiff? Yes, it will be there.

Irish on SM incensed by alledged illegal clearout by Eng that they claim should have been a straight red?

I watched the whole game quite closely. I did not see it neither did the Ref, ARef and the TMO.

Views of others on this?

It was Genge on Furlong just over halfway through the first half. It should have been a red. At speed, shoulder directly to head, no attempt to bind.

Video here:

https://twitter.com/aj_d___/status/1766514145334100073

Commentators see what the ref 'sees', after being instructed by the TV bosses to never contradict the ref. For example, if the ref says it wasn't forward, the commentators will say 'That was just about a flat pass,' or some such nonsense.

I can sort of see why the commentators are overlooking so much, and why the TV execs don't replay. Money. And they don't want to discourage the refs. Let's face it, we have all played in games where the ref has made some howlers, but its the game.

EDIT: The video was taken down.

Coventry comments reported -

And, just remember folks, Coventry never went bust and got demoted to the bottom most league. Oh, wait, they did go bust? Did they get kicked to the bottom? No. Short memories, people in glass houses.

Meritocracy my @r5e. Anywhere money is involved, there will be sharks and speakers of untruths.

Well, the would, wouldn't they? Not much love lost when it all went ####s up.

RugbyPass article  by the dubious Paul Smith also quoting the nasty Gilbert but worth a scan -

https://www.rugbypass.com/news/wasps-re-emergence-raises-more-questions-than-it-answers/

Paul Smith is an a*se with an axe to grind. Unpopular locally.

Very much so.

Makes me wonder how Mr Holland will get himself out of the EPIC and Sixways. Maybe the deal he has with Birmingham City will become permanent.

Then he will have a nice farm house there to sell also. I wonder if the contractors who did all that work ever got paid? I know that they had not been when Wasps folded.

Had no problem signing pledge. However, if new stadium is in Kent the likelihood of me attending home matches is virtually nil.

He makes the mistake of equating the number of fans to the viability and future of professional rugby.

Fans will not, cannot make a team financially viable. Not in rugby, football, tennis, cricket, golf, or whatever. Fans make an atmosphere, make a contribution, motivate the players during the game.

As such, any article that considers attendance an important factor is missing the point.

Fans are there to make TV coverage look good. To give the huge sums paid for the broadcast rights some legitimacy, to help justify the money big money sponsors and advertisers spend.

What amazes me is that he still lives in Leamington. I guess having his girls (I think he has two?) go to Warwick School (damned expensive) might be why.

Cars and most other vehicles are not engineered to run at or below 20 mph.

I don't think is correct any more. If you place your car in 3rd and drive at 20mph the engine will be virtually idling & you will be burning almost no fuel. There's less accelerating up to speed & braking again so less omissions & less wear & tear on your vehicle.

No engine is designed to idle and live long. If your engine spends most of its time at idle, it will die a very premature death. The one owner, little old lady who goes half a mile to church once a week is the worst one to buy a car off. The bearings will take a hammering, and the oil will soon have forbidden glitter (aluminium and copper flakes), leading to excessive wear on the cams, lifters, oil pump and many other parts, and oil passage and filter blockages.
