Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Let's start a Match Thread
« on: December 13, 2020, 11:00:07 AM »
I think we made hard work of it, although clicked for 10-15 mins in the second half which secured the 5 points.  Great to have Dan back and to see the scrum go so well, also another reasonable performance by Paolo and YY enjoying himself. However, Line out was still shaky (2 5m line outs in the first half botched) and Jimmy's kicking seems a worry (he probably needs a rest).

Mills and Fekitoa are hopefully not far off to give Jimmy a bit of down time.

Big test next week against Montpellier.

1st I thought we edged it performance wise and the result was fair.  We could have been further ahead had we not been so sloppy early on with the line out.

2nd half we started ok but really faultered with the yellow card not helping.

Overall, it could have gone either way and I am relieved that it fell to us in the end.  We do need to remember that while that was a second Bristol side we were also without a number of key players and had players who have been interrupted with England duties so.   I think Glos were much worse this weekend.

I don't expect that we will get much next week as we have a tight turn around and it is a tricky away game, but let's take the the points today and work on how we will pressure cips and the Glos forwards

I think the present prem rugby members will push for the two automatically promoted clubs to take this cost if there is one.  Otherwise why would you do it?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: The catepillar - my latest annoyance
« on: October 28, 2020, 09:03:40 AM »
The main problem with the caterpillar is that the ball will be in the ruck and a caterpillar forming. The ref will say use it and then allow the scrum half as long as it takes to roll the ball all the way to the end of the caterpillar. Which is well over the time alloted to actually distribute the ball.

If a side could deploy the caterpillar and move the ball on in sufficient time I'd be ok with it.  I don't think that is actually possible though.

I'm not sure why refs don't penalise the slow distribution from the ruck, unless the infrequent use puts them on the back foot.

Congratulations to Exeter, that game could have gone either way and I expect a lot of us will be reliving that line out at the end...  The call to take the line out long was a risk too far.  The conditions were not good for a classic final but the last two hours have flown by.

So proud of the Wasps team and club this season.  I think they can all hold their heads up high and this will have been a great learning experience for the younger players in the team and gives us some hunger for next season fingers crossed.

It looks like a balanced enough side and I'm still really excited to see the boys go tomorrow.

Albeit tomorrow excitement will have been replaced with nerves!

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Malakai Ruled Out
« on: October 23, 2020, 11:37:47 AM »
Malakai being out gives me an awful sense of deja vu reminding me of Beale being unfortunate last time we went to HQ.

Shame for Alfie as the experience would have been great for his development, that said, he will have plenty of opportunities.

The others will be missed but the whole squad have got us to the final and it fits that it continues to be a squad effort.

Even with full firepower Exeter are a machine and so hard to overcome.  The young squad that we have need to see this as a step in their development and go into this with the squad spirit that has been created.  Hopefully the experienced heads in Joe, Jimmy and Dan can help absorb some of the pressure.

I don't mind the grey one, although is it quite a change from the norm.  I do like the home kit, looks pretty smart.

They can appeal but someone has to pay for the costs if they want to take it far and they may have to stump up for any council/Wasps costs on the way.

I think this will seriously test his mettle, he has been riding high pretty much all his career and has jumped in with a couple of England and Sarries "untouchables".  However I don't see him himself as being so untouchable.

He clearly is a quality player but the last few years have seen him moved into a utility role and looking less and less effective in games.  It will show his class if he can rebuild to restore the upward curve.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: 7 Positive COVID tests
« on: October 20, 2020, 03:54:01 PM »
It has been reported in the local rag that additional positive results will indicate to PHE that the infection is not under control and they will request/enforce Wasps to forfeit.

We've got nowhere near the infections or spread that Sale had and it feels incredibly unjust if what is being reported is the case.  That said if there is a danger that we may field an infected player I can understand the nervousness.

Tomorrow will be a nervous day.  Apparently only 1 more positive result will see us be forced to cede the match.

Hopefully for the players and coaches sake they are all clear.

Slightly changed application of the rules than Sale experienced.

Let's hope those who have tested positive have had limited contact with the rest of the club.  I suppose we will see when the next round of testing takes place.
