Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Premiership/Top 14 tables at the end of 2023

Happy new year Wasps supporters.

To be honest I don't give a (insert favourite expletive here).

I haven't watched a Premiership match or read a Premiership match report or looked at the tables since our demise. Don't even know, or care, who won last season.

Interesting (and very sensible) location. Adjacent to the M20/M25 interchange. Not a bad run from HW IF the traffic flows are good!
We live near HW (well actually between Hughenden Valley and Prestwood) and often run round the M25 (both going North and South) to that junction, and it has always taken longer than it normally takes to get up the M40 to the Ricoh/CBS.

Yesterday I was pleased to go to a game and watch Leicester Tigers get destroyed.

OK it was a ladies match, but it still was a defeat for Leicester. :)

Yes the Premiership are keeping to their 10K ground capacity rule - which is a joke as the far more popular Premier League only require a 5.5K capacity ground.

If it took them about a year to decide on the "franchise" model for P2, and it was soundly rejected by the Championship clubs last month then I can't see how any agreed announcement will be ready for this month.

Officially URC TV is streamed by VIAPLAY in the UK, and is available on SKy and Prime. It is, however ?9.99/month.

There is an alternative which is free and quasi-legal.

https://vk.com/video/@rugbyonsofa

(Information is from a friend who works for the UK arm of a major anti-virus company)
VK is a Russian streaming site that has agreements with many of the continental, and further afield, tv sports broadcasters to allow them to stream their broadcasts. Officially it is for the Russian Federation, but Russian law allows unrestricted streaming outside of Russia. However not sure that the UK courts would agree!

The streams are virus free, but often they superimpose Russian commentry over the English/French/Italian commentry. They usually appear on the site just before the matches kick-off, and are in HD, if bandwidth, and original signal, allows.

Because of the technicalities of converting to streams they are usually between 5 and 10 mins behind real-time.

You can tell he is a barrister the way he analyses and gives his discisions.

Who remebers that match against Bathin 2020 when both our hookers were injured and Barnes, basically, talked Tom West out of playing as Hooker, as he hadn't played there since age group, and then explaining it well to everyone.

He has a sports-based legal firm, and, according to a KC friend would probably be a KC by now if he had concentrated less on his reffing.

Even if he doesn't become part of the dinner-party speaker circuit he has a bright future outside of the game.

From where I live it's nearer than the Ricoh/CBS by about 10 miles.

Estimated travelling time though is 35 mins longer by car (nearly 2 hours). However tht is Googles estimate for this evening - don't know what it would be like on a Saturday afternoon.

Can get, by train, to Swanley station though with only 4 changes involved - still will take nearly 3 hours though

So at the same time as the RFU are discussing the future of the Championship and Premiership 2, they are also talking about joining-up the remnants of the PRL with those from other countries.

Where will this leave "Premiership2" and those Clubs that may have seen it as a lifeline (such as the reformed Wasps, Ealing, Coventry)

There is also the soon to be free Kassam. Not too much information about what the owners want to do with it. Also can't remember how much surrounding land there might be for development.

Not sure about the Kassam. who, even though he sold the Club, he owns the stadium and surrounding area. Appears he wants to knock it down and develop more "Leisure" facilities.

Also a bit of a wind tunnel effect because of the "missing" stand

They finish their pool above Georgia - the team many people are touting to be included in the six nations.

A friend has suggested that any idea of the Saffers being added should be dropped, and it be expanded to 8 nations to include these two European nations.

The Rugby Football Union and Premiership Rugby are understood to have reached agreement on a radical overhaul of the control and management of leading England players as part of a wider ?128 million deal.

The new ?professional game partnership?, which is expected to be publicly unveiled in December, will see the current 45-man elite player squad (EPS) replaced by a new arrangement that will give England head coach Steve Borthwick much greater control of an inner core group of 20 players from the start of next season.

The stand-out feature of the new deal will enable Borthwick to have much greater oversight and input into both the conditioning, skills development and player load of an elite hand-picked group who will be identified as the foundation stones for the 2027 World Cup squad, in a new two-tier system that retains a larger EPS group.

The establishing of what is close to a ?hybrid contract? for England?s leading players would give Borthwick and the RFU more control and input into the playing and training load of his main players in return for greater compensation. It should also intensify competition among players within the England squad to secure a ?core? place.

?This is about creating a winning England and winning clubs,? said one senior source. ?It is a win-win for clubs and country.?

At present all clubs are paid ?40,000 for every player provided to England?s Elite Player Squad, regardless if they are an established starter or unused player.
?England coach will be held to a much greater account?

The deal, which is expected to see the RFU pay the 10 Premiership clubs around ?32million per year for the next four years, will also see Borthwick face greater accountability than his predecessor Eddie Jones, who was accused of paying ?lip service? to post-tournament reviews.

The extra scrutiny and transparency is to come in the form of a ?beefed up? professional game board, which includes representatives from the RFU, Premiership and Championship clubs and the players? union.

It is thought that it may include the appointment of an independent chair, and sources claim the new PGB will no longer be regarded as a talking shop.

?For the first time the England coach will have to be more transparent about his decisions and be held to a much greater account,? said one senior source close to the PGB. ?In future it will be able to bare its teeth. Eddie seemed to treat the PGB with disdain, those days are over.?

The deal will also see the scrapping of the widely discredited anonymous review panel, made up of RFU board and executive members, as well as former players and coaches, that was originally set up to hold Jones to account.

Borthwick is unlikely to resist greater accountability. Sources say it was his presentation to the PBG following England?s disastrous Six Nations campaign that provided an ?alarming wake-up call? to the failings of the current system.

Encouragingly, there appears to be much greater enthusiasm within the Premiership clubs to collaborate with the England project, after relations had completely broken-down during Jones?s seven-year tenure.

The new arrangement, which will kick in next year, should see England move much closer to much-vaunted Ireland?s high-performance programme which has enabled Andy Farrell?s side to move to No 1 in the world rankings despite a fraction of the player numbers and financial resources.

England, despite the ?200 million spent on the last eight-year professional game agreement, only had access to 25 players during a normal Test week, not enough for 15 v 15 training sessions ? a situation that does not affect Borthwick?s Ireland counterpart Andy Farrell. Clubs generously allowed the national team to retain 29 players during last season?s Six Nations but that was an exception to the rule.

A symptom of the failing of the current regime came when Borthwick warned at the end of the Six Nations campaign in March that his players were not fit enough to compete at the World Cup, but claimed he did not have the power to address the problem before the squad reassembled for the pre-tournament camp.

?Once the players leave on Sunday and return to their clubs, we have no control over them. We will have conversations with the players and with their clubs so we can give what we would like, but ultimately we don?t have any control over that,? said Borthwick.

?What we all want is a competitive, vibrant Premiership that produces the best possible players in a condition ready for Test rugby to be able to compete at the top of Test rugby. Because that is where we want to be. We don?t want multiple Six Nations with only a couple of wins. We want to be at the top of the championship.?

Talking to a few last night - IF (big if) the ghostly RFU Div 2 does arise and is by invitation who would sign up?
We felt very few of the existing Championship would put their names forward.
Wasps as a Franchise, maybe WW and possibly LI if there is anyone with the money left. Ealing but with Jersey gone we could only think Coventry with the money and desire. Possibly Scottish if the rumoured funding is available. Cornish Pirates are considering going part time but seem to have glimmers on their new stadium. Not sure the rest have a desire, funding or a stadium (last applies to Ealing too.

I do hope that PRL/RFU follow the same ground capacity rules as for the, more popular, Premier League football grounds: The ground must have a certified capacity of at least 5,000 which includes 2,000 seats.

Of course of they still insist on current rules staying then only Doncaster, as it stands will be allowed in the new Premiership 2, as they have planning permission to increase capacity, and they have recruited  wisely for this season.

Not so sure about L. Scottish, as they have to share with Richmond, and, like the majority of Championship clubs are semi-pro. The AAthletic ground only has a capacity of about 4000.

Same capacity applies to Cornish Pirates, but as stated can't see a semi-pro club being able to compete.

Coventry currently has a capacily of 4000, and has the ability to compete ok, but can't see them being able to increase capacity by more than 1000.

Ealing could easily compete, but can't see them being able to increase capacity much above 1000 more than the current 5,000 (2,200 seats). However they have put-in a few more, temporary, seats this season (a couple of hundred)  and do have the space for more using temporary stands. However those would be required to be moved on non-matchdays, as they would interfere with the othe pitches on site.
