Title: Bath Game Thread
Post by: Hymenoptera on November 02, 2019, 03:48:02 PM
My half time take away.
We should be well up, knock ons are absolutely killing us, at crucial moments too, Brad knocking on in what looked a certain try. Every time we get any momentum we knock on.
Sops off target, left 6 easy points out there.
Positives, we do look better with Gops, at last someone who can read the game and create something. The boys are putting in effort, that's for sure but the basics are lacking. Scrum has parity at least, arguably we have them there, line out decent.. I can see Mjnozzi causing problems later in the season.
I'm disappointing with the scoreboard but i'm more pleased with the performance thus far...the effort and energy are there.
One thing us Wasps fans have to accept this season is blatant yellows will not be given to our opposition...that said, this young ref has been good.

Personally I thought Lima had a good half and Odogwu is superb so far. Our big No 8 is a ball of energy and we just need to learn to follow him. All the pressure should have been more points but so far positive. Good to see the Lima- Jimmy axis working - last season could have been far better.
I'll take the rose tints off for now.

Looks a lot crisper so far and we could have been more up without mistakes. Lima looking good and playing a lot flatter. JG as first receiver more often than not. Front row have been effective and our 8 is carrying well.

Thats fair Neils, i'll go with that. Yes the 8, can we have a nickname for him cause I can't spell him, has looked like he's had 5 shreddied wheat for breakfast. Lima playing better for sure, there has been a bit of swapping as first receiver too, which mixes things up. Kill the errors and we should take this. As big as Barf pack are, we are more than matching them.
Been a critic of Dan this season but he's looking alot sharper.

Gaskell off...doesnt look good, shoulder injury. Will be a big loss, arguably MOM for the first half.

Awful passage of play, Odogwu misses Roko, bath move upfield, and from a wasps ruck, ZZ makes a shocking decision to produce the worst kick seen to man, 2 meters straight into the 9's hand...Bath grind to the line and in front.
Brookes taking Boyce to the cleaners so Bath make a change.

Couple of passages of offloading flowing play and I thought maybe... we’ve got our Wasps back???

Definitely a better performance, some inaccuracies that should decrease as this group play together more.

Lima and Jimmy were class, Sione an absolute beast- reminds me of Nathan, Paulo looks a real handful and Minozzi looks really really sharp.

Bring on Sale next week

Wow. Wasn’t expecting a win today so I’m very happy. It was vital to get a first win ASAP this season in my opinion and we have now done that. Hopefully it will breed confidence for the next few weeks and we are also due a fit Launchers back very soon. Onwards and upwards !

Don’t worry DK. I was in a bad place after 50 mins, but had a glass of wine and a peroni at HT which kicked in nicely. On on

A win's a win and in itself great

So how was it in reality? What can we take from the game overall?

Still a long way to go as still plenty of things not quite working or going to hand but as I have mentioned previously today again showed there is a group of players that really want to play for and with each other which is always an important start. Hopefully 9 10 12 13 15 get a few games together to build on the signs of promise today. Shields really vocal through the ref mic driving players onwards and put in a good shift himself along with rest of the back row.

Back from the game. It stopped raining about an hour before the game and started again at the final whistle.

Much debate among the players at that final penalty, but some observed if we kick it Bath got nil points. So it got kicked.

Sitting watching the players, I focused a lot on the backs to see how Minozzi and Jimmy fared. Jimmy ran the show, that much was obvious. And he made a big difference, offsetting what can only be called brain farts giving away so many penalties and coughing the all up so often. Seriously, how can so many players not know how to hold or catch a ball?

Kibirige, Odogwu and Minozzi all struggled with the high ball.

Overall? Better than any of the games so far this year by quite a margin, but a lot of improvement needed.

Grumble Grumble Grumble! Why didn’t we get a bonus point. >:(

Seriously, sounds like we are developing well. So let’s be positive.

Maybe we could have gone for the corner with that final penalty to try for the BP, what could possibly have gone wrong?  :)

Big improvement on last week, apart from ZuZu attempting a kick. Still some careless errors, and too many off-sides, but looked much more like a team. It would not be a proper afternoon at the Ricoh without the final five minutes of stress.

Veanu and Gaskell were excellent. Brad was everywhere, actually all the forwards fronted up but these 2 were particularly good. Mention for Rowlands too.
Gops made a huge difference and given he's been out for so long, was class. Paolo did ok, thats all, thought Kilbrige made ground everytime he had the ball, create him some space i think he'll do some damage. Minozzi showed enough to say he'll have something throughout the season.
One thing I really liked was JTA. When he came on he was a ball of energy, very vocal and created a voice that I think the team could buy into..he seems a character and put himself about in the 25 mins he had...he's grown on me, I think he'll bring something other than just a prop.

The performance was def something to hopefully build on. For bath, I thought Priestland had his best game in a Bath shirt, some of his kicks to touch were a bit special..

And a word for the L plate ref..I thought he was very good, non yellow aside. Time to retire of some muppets...Doyle

Ah, the reassuring glow of a W. That felt a lot better. Crisper, more fluent. Working back through the team I thought the front row were great (apart from ZZ's totally bizarre kick. Thought Rowland had a great game as did Gaskell and when TF came on he was solid. Back row - BS outstanding, SV not far behind and NC effective. Robson delivered quicker ball than last week. For me LS was great and let's not forget his place kicking. JG - excellent. Was the leader out there and made such a difference as first receiver. Fekitoa carried strongly and I think will be an asset. The back three line last looked lively going forward but I don't think we'll get away with playing that trio very often under the high ball. Minozzi looked dangerous. Overall much better. JG made a huge difference, our 8 looks like a real find and everything feels better with a W.

After a crappy summer with Mrs Notso getting diagnosed with breast cancer and Notso senior having kidney failure it was a pleasure to enjoy a Wasps performance more than worthy of the win. When they start catching some of these passes and following Vailanu through contact they will be very dangerous!

Well done to the players, glad to see them get a result for their efforts. Hope the injuries are not too serious.

Very similar thoughts as you, BNTR. A more complete performance. Iron out the unforced errors and we will be heading up the table. My thoughts are with you on the health issues - we have been there. Stay strong.

I watched the game on RugbyPass. During the second half, one of the commentators said that Dai had a bit of a 'clear out' after the first two games (losses) which was why Bassett, Mathews and De Jongh were not in the 23.  Don't know if he was actually correct, I'm only repeating what I heard.

A long day of rugby yesterday and good to be back at the Ricoh, first game of the season for me.

Gopperth definitely makes a big difference, Rowlands was good, Tommy Taylor also good.

For me we are off ‘head wise’ and hopefully the win will help that.

We need more confidence and I believe we will get better.

I have no idea where we will finish this season, that depends what is going on up top.

Much better and hopefully it will continue

Quote from the other half: "We have transformed from a team that only plays for the first 60 minutes to one that only plays for the last 60 mins."

Question - watched the highlights - did Jimmy stand at 10 quite a bit? Just seemed like that on the programme

Difficult to be too prescriptive off a highlights package - but it looked more coherent

Those at the game would be better placed to judge the following:

a) Glass half full - quite a few new players, just needed the guidance of Jimmy as "coach on the field" to being the best out the team and they'd hopefully push on now - with a little confidence restored

b) Glass half empty - needing the "ancient" Jimmy to pull a performance together from a bunch of seasoned internationals, super rugby players and Prem vets suggests everything is not quite lining up and its best not to take too much from one win

Personally, I'd still be concerned if it really did need Jimmy to make that much difference.

Thoughts?

I'd go a)-ish
Lots of new players, the more stability they have the faster they will bed in and Jimmy helps to bring a lot of that. If him being out of action in 3 months time means all falls apart then I am well wrong.

We still seem short of someone to stand in for Jimmy though.

A mix of a and b. Gopperth did well but it wasn't all about him. Sopoaga played a lot flatter (could argue due to JG). Vailanu punched holes and Shields was outstanding. Carr, Gaskell and Flament made heaps of tackles and Rowlands added ballast. Our back three ran and stepped well. Without a doubt Jimmy's presence helped but we were better overall. Our front row went well as well. He was great verbally as well. In answer to the 10 thing he was often first receiver but Sopoaga was also playing in traffic more which really helped us going forward.

Thanks. I'm torn - partly from not having seen this game - but having watched each minute of the previous 2. My concern was that experienced players were just not leading or playing as a team. Nor was there any apparent plan.

Jimmy's back and its like there was a plan of sorts and some control is back - not perfect. Its a problem for me, if Jimmy is the difference - rather than just a few teething probs that needed a little direction to work, such that Jimmy isn't vital.

I too would be concerned if Jimmy got damaged.
Title: Re: Bath Game Thread
Post by: mike909 on November 03, 2019, 02:36:16 PM
Thanks Shugs - I though Sops was playing flatter - its a question as of why I suppose.

As I said above - I'd be concerned if it really needed Jimmy to be the catalyst - it ought not to be an issue (playing as a team, leadership) for experienced quality individuals

I'm hoping (its always the hope...) that we can push on a little and gain the sort of confidence that allowed play like for Dan's try. I know team sports are always a bit weird - but I'm just fingers crossed on Jimmy staying fit!

Thanks VV and Heathen.

To my eye, I think a second real playmaker and organiser made a difference and it was hard know who Robson would pick. Making more of all the options, Vailanu, Minozzi and Odogwu who in particular looked to rattle the Bath defence. Enjoyed Cruse's try, took some nerve, looked close to an intercepted pass, perhaps a sign of confidence returning. Good to see Rowlands back as well, he is big and busy.

Robson is improving every game. In mitigation to Bath, they were on a third choice scrum half, welcome to the club! Well maybe they can join when they field a 5th choice!

Odd choice by bath to kick for penalty at the end and then try and run from their 22 on the restart. All out for the win I suppose, but ended costing them a point.

My thought was they were trying to guarantee the losing bonus, with the hope of getting another score.

I can be quite annoying when I am sat next to you at the match. I kept saying to my dad next to me, 'They can't kick it other than to touch - they have to play it or end the game.'

When the penalty was awarded, I actually shouted at those around me, including my dad, who got up to go, 'If we kick this it denies them the point.' A lot sat back down to watch. Then I could hear (on the RefLink) some of the Wasps players debating the same thing. 'Shall we risk missing and them catching it and running it down the field, to deny them the point?' It took a few seconds, then they all agreed it was worth it. I was relaying what I could hear of the debate to those around me who had by now sat back down. I can tell you there was a LOT of merriment when that kick went over.
