Title: Team v Quins?
Post by: Shugs on January 25, 2021, 02:20:24 PM
Bit of uncertainty with England call ups etc but all is far from lost. With some injury luck I reckon we could field something like this 23 on Sunday:

McIntyre
Cruse
Brookes
Gaskell
Cardall
Willis
Young
Shields
Porter
Umaga
Bassett
Gopperth
Fekitoa
Kibirige
Sopoaga

Bench
Harris
Taylor
JTA
Douglass
T Willis
Vellacott
Watson
Mills

Far from shabby!

Has there been confirmation that Fekitoa & Mills will be fit?
Assume also Minozzi will be available too?

Lasha Jaiani must be with the squad by now, but maybe only for few days or so if he had to do a 10-day quarantine. Probably too early even for a bench spot, but am looking forward to seeing him play at some point during the 6 nations window.

Malakai yes - https://www.rugbypass.com/news/malakai-fekitoa-has-shared-a-picture-to-gladden-the-hearts-of-all-wasps-fans/

Not sure about Ryan.

No, my mistake, might be a bit early for Mills. So could be Juan or possibly Atkinson.

As he has been based in Exeter I assume he has been ok from the outset.

Lasha flew to England before the end of last year. I believe he finished quarantine on the day his signing was announced.

Just to clarify. Last couple of paragraphs from Bobby's report (see other thread).

West will be unavailable for selection as he goes away for the England camp along with Paolo Odogwu and Dan Robson. Joe Launchbury has withdrawn from the squad with a stress fracture of his tibia that will rule him out for around six weeks.

Jack Willis, Jacob Umaga and Charlie Atkinson are in the 'shadow' England squad but will remain with Wasps and are available for club selection.

You may be correct Montague, but that article says "in the hope he could be in contention for selection when Wasps restart a January 31 Premiership game at home to Harlequins." it doesn't say he will be available....

I'd like to see Matteo back in the match day 23. Ryan Mills too.

Cheers, 8th January I think that was announced (on a quick google search), so he'll have been with us 3 weeks by the game. Could be enough if he's training out of his skin, but I guess more likely that he'll have to wait another couple of weeks.

Fair point, but the tweet from Malakai says he's in full training, and the previous updates from the club were that they were targeting the Quins game. So looks hopeful, but not definite I guess. DJ Juan should be available, so no need to rush him back.

For me, Juan De Jongh keeps his place in the team. I thought he was quietly impressive last time out.

When talking about West, Lee Blackett mentioned that he had already picked team to face Queens this morning.
Seems early to decide considering covid test results aren’t known till tomorrow and game isn’t till Sunday

Read that and wondered too. Seems quite early.

Isn't that fairly standard? They'll then spend the week working on systems, set piece, general tactics etc as a team.

Might have an idea in your head as to squad ,but considering these interesting times just seemed a bit early. Do we train on a Monday? I know they go in to be tested , but would have thought they might wait for results back before training.

Our new recruit from Georgia could prove to be a very useful acquisition. I would hope that he gets his opportunity to showcase his talents, sooner rather than later.

Even without those injured/ international duty players, I still fancy us to do better than average across the next six matches.

Do we still have the Cornish Pirate Caulfield?

So reading that I'd say De Jongh carries on at 13 with Jimmy at 12. Kibirige for Odogwu.

I like this:

Quote
Better news for Wasps comes in the form of winger Zach Kibirige, who has missed the last two games after being knocked out away at Sale Sharks.

"The two-week break came at a good time for him," said Blackett. "He passed everything a long time ago but it just didn't sit right with everyone at the club to just put him back two weeks after that injury.

"Now he is a few more weeks down the line and he is absolutely fine. He is back in full training now for the past four weeks."

The way he was laid out its hard to believe he would have been safe to play after 2 weeks no matter what the protocols say.

I was going to correct you, but I stand corrected. He is actually an immediate signing, I had absolutely no idea and assumed he was for next season, well spotted.

Think we're light at second row, and until Fekitoa is back we have lost a bit of game breaking. Juan won't let us down, but he won't have that same danger factor to maybe created space outside

So potentially it could who plays at lock with Jamma as the only ?

Big Mac, Cruse, Brookes, Jamma, ?, Willis, Young, Shields

Porter, Umaga

Bassett, Gopperth, de Jong, Kibirige

Sopaga

Harris, Taylor, JTA, ?, Willis Vellacott, Atkinson, MLB

I think it will be Cardall starting with Douglas on the bench.

What's been good about this squad since lockdown is that in adversity people have stood up and made their mark when needed. Hopefully this will be the same. Any team is going to miss Launchbury, Rowlands, West, Willis, Robson and Odogwu but the guys likely to come in look good enough to take their chance.

Yes you hope they can keep it going. Praying for no more injuries

Yes, that's the key isn't it. Injuries in a couple of key positions (lock, 12, 8) and we're struggling.

Morris has put in some good shift when he plays, 2nd row option if required with a similar workrate and contribution to Shields

Yup he was taken off with, I think, a groin strain.

I think before our win at the EA's last season with quite a tyro team, I'd have worried about what team we might put out. But assuming that the backs include Lima, Bassett, Zach, Jimmy and Jacob - we will score points and we have enough forwards to secure ball.

And we play like a squad now. Good opportunity to demonstrate that again.

If any more are called up we might as well play the Scots ourselves.
