Wasps Rugby Discussion / European Cup Strategy
« on: November 30, 2020, 02:20:37 PM »
Following on from a couple of other threads about the squad, injuries and expectations, we've not got 2 weekends of European Cup games coming up after Newcastle, how do folk think we should approach it?

Personally I feel our squad is stretched to breaking point already and we're only 2 games into the season. We simply can't afford to fight on 2 fronts and meanwhile we desperately need to get some experience into our younger players who are definitely going to be needed later on in the season. My preference is for key players to play no part whatsoever in the first 2 pool rounds, they have nothing to prove and everything to lose, and for other core players to be used as subs or as sparingly as possible. For me it's:

Key players (fully rested):

- Brookes, Harris, Taylor, Launchbury, Rowlands, Young, J Willis, Robson, Umaga, Gopperth, Kiberige, Bassett, Minozzi

Players to be used sparingly, off the bench, and preferably only when really needed:

- Cruse, JTA, Gaskell, Ohgre, Vellacott, De Jong

Main squad for selection:

- ZZ, West, Barbeary, Owlett, Alo, Cardall, Douglas, Vukasinovic, Morris, Curran, Tunney, Eckersley, Porter, Wolstenholme, Attkinson, Sopoaga, LeBou, Simonds, Odogwu, Sirker, Williams, Anderson

Understood (by me) to be injured:

- Fekitoa, McIntyre, Miller, Mills, Shields, Spink, Vailanu, Watson, Tom Willis

I wouldn't write that squad off against Dragons or even (at home) against Montpellier. If they get the results maybe we play some bigger names in the next set, but if not, I can live without European glory this year.
