That's the Dales. Always been a big rugby union area, Ilkley and Otley being 2 of the better known teams. One of my early RU heroes (even though I'm older than him) was Peter Winterbottom and he comes from that area.

 NWW,

Where in NY? My father ran a pub in Pickering in the late ?60 & ?70s and I went to school there before I joined the Army in ?72 and I know the area reasonably well.

We're not bound by European courts now, are we? Any decision would be at best advisory.
No we're not, unless we choose to be as apart of any agreements with the EU. However it does set a precedent that someone might want to argue in our own Supreme Court if they wanted to join another league.

If DR didn?t have control of the shares he couldn?t use them as collateral for the loan that fell apart at the last minute. That?s probably why it dragged on for so long.

It also looks why DR had no choice but to call the receivers in.

Has anyone seen any attendance figures for this season? Wasn?t the premise of the 10 team league that they would get more revenue?

Why would anyone make an upfront commitment to buy an ST? Those promises may be well meaning but they?re meaningless if the tax authorities or DCMS suddenly have a change of heart and they are looking at the same data and wondering if they will get paid.

I'm against central contracts but if they are introduced they should be limited to players who have a very good chance of playing in the next world cup. Farrell is 32 and whilst I know there have been players older than 36 but they are few and far between and he's no Johnny Sexton.

Does that BBC headline make sense to anyone?

Quote
Northampton Saints: Record ?21.96m turnover, despite before-tax loss of ?1.1m

Rugby dump at least makes some sense:

Quote
Releasing their financial figures today, Northampton Saints have recorded a loss of ?1.1 million before tax, despite a record annual turnover of ?21.96 million.

Without a close look at the books and all the footnotes its always hard to judge these things because of one-off and other costs. Increasing turnover has a cost in itself, the thing to look for is there a one off cost to get that new revenue level the new new normal.

Nonetheless, worrying times for players and staff.

I have used that VK site in the past but then switched to PRTV when it started.

I wouldn't touch it now for the reasons Ross gives.

Also a pleasure watching Treviso these days with Jacob, Paolo, Fekitoa, Watson and Minozzi all potential picks

Edinburgh v Benetton Treviso Friday evening, tempting to book a nice weekend in Edinburgh with a stop off on the way into the city.
Anyone know where I can watch this without signing up to a subscription channel? I don?t mind paying a one-off fee.

Not sure how it works or even if available in the UK but URC TV is an option.

Three ex Wasps playing for Treviso plus Vellacott on Edinburgh's bench.
Thanks. The ex Wasps  players are partly why I want to watch but also because I'm getting withdrawal symptoms.

When I saw this post and then the article headline my assumption was Newcastle because I had a look at the table earlier and saw they were bottom without a win. Six straight losses and only 3 BPs.

Can you kick a drop goal direct from a free kick?

A brief googling says no. So back to over rewards a weak or ineffective scrum. A front row of Makos here we come.
There's no reason why repeated offences couldn't be penalised by awarding a penalty.

#3 We've discussed this a number of times on here a good move.

5. Enforce ? and tighten ? the ruck ?use it? countdown

The easiest tweak of this list? Referees could be stricter with enforcing the ?use it? law, whereby a team must play the ball five seconds after the referee has deemed it available. As it stands, this often leads to the dreaded ?caterpillar ruck? ? which would be tough to define, and therefore ban, in itself ? so enforcing this law would disrupt its formation. Only a positive. Could the limit be lowered to three seconds, too? Or, perhaps, once the referee has called ?use it?, the ball is automatically out after five seconds, rather than a resulting scrum?

Once the ref has called use it nobody can join the ruck on either side, should stop the caterpillar and also give the SH a hurry up in case there's a a big push from the defending side that can't be countered,

@Neils & NWW

I agree, its hard to see a TV deal providing anywhere near the money the have in the past, rugby is only a schedule filler not a main draw to subscription TV. I would also expect there to be some fairly stiff claw back clauses around clubs dropping out and relegation.

I've said it before, but they might be better off in the long run seeing if ITV/C4 will pick it up and show live games, even if they have to give it away for a couple of years. Free to air rather than some dusty corner of yet another a subscription channel playing second or third fiddle to football would help rebuild fans bases, attract more kids to the game and be more appealing to sponsors if there a larger audience.
