Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: TIGERS FREE TICKETS
« on: October 22, 2022, 10:38:01 PM »
Dai was a disaster in his last 18 months. It was obvious that the style in 2017 was not what he wanted, it was what he got with fiver at 10 and a superstar back line, and put up with whilst we were winning.
Had Dai been Shaun, Danny would never have left, they were and are very close, and if there is one pivotal moment on the playing front, it was Danny going, and his replacement by a much more conservative 10. We would never have fallen as far in playing terms.

Couple of things I think need to be elaborated here.

Sopoaga was signed because Cipriani was being difficult in contract negotiations and he's been open with this. Cips wanted to play for England, but wanted Eddie's confirmation on that first. He waited until the end of the season and when picked for SA tour signed with an English club. Meanwhile Dai signed Sopoaga because he was available and genuinely a fantastic fly half, because Cipriani wouldn't commit until end of season. Dai's hand was forced.

And Dai absolutely wanted us to play exciting backs, because we did so before Cips even signed for us! Sopoaga being misused as a direct Cipriani replacement is indicative of Dai's desired play style. Then Umaga replacing Sopoaga further confirms this, because surprise, he played closer to Cipriani than Sops and Dai wanted that.

Listen Dai leaving ended up being good for us at the time (which I was against initially), but he wasn't god awful in his last few seasons. In his final season he was just incredibly inconsistent and felt like he micromanaged too much.

I am puzzled by some of the 'angry' responses here. I took this as a nice gesture from Tigers. Whenever I have visited them, the staff and fans have been nothing other than great.

I cannot say that I will be taking them up on the offer, but since Covid and my heart attack, I have had to severely curtail what I do and where I go outside my home.

I speak for myself, and probably a lot of fans. We are in pain, but please recognise that the club is where it is because it owes, according to Stephen Vaughan, over £100m. No one forced Wasps to get that far in to debt, it was choices made by the management since the 'dark days'. For the last few years, Wasps have been a corpse still walking. Could things have been different? Yes, we could have simply folded way back then instead.

But do not 'blame' the other clubs. Self interest is inevitable, as is bending of the rules. To misquote Barbossa, "The rules is more what you’d call ‘guidelines’ than actual rules."

Given the amount of players who were unable to get a club at the end of last season, I'm staggered so many of our players were able to find clubs. Hint of sarcasm, but also genuinely surprised.

"Martyn Phillips, the chairman of Premiership Rugby (PRL), explained last week that the league could not endorse a situation where clubs were able to shed debt in administration but retain full access to central funding, arguing it would create inequality and act as a bad precedent."

Whereas persistent cheating and largely getting away with it creates no inequality and acts as an excellent precedent of course.  All clubs are equal, but some are more equal than others.
.

We can't pay our players. Saracens paid their players too much. Clearly different situations. Ones cheating and another is complete collapse of a company.

Saracens were punished and in my opinion aren't cheating anymore. They are still unlikable as hell and I hate them. I think the prem have treated both situations correctly.

Clearly Saracens should've been stripped for assets and banned indefinitely. And our debt should've magically paid off. But sadly people, that isn't realistic!

All of the staff are redundant. I can’t see how a club emerges at all. The vultures were only (inevitably) interested in the real estate and our only hope (Armstrong bid) was squashed by the other teams. There’s nothing to be rescued now.

This just isn't true. The rules of the competition we were in were clear. Administration = relegation and forfeit of P shares. It wasn't a situation the rest of the clubs decided to get together and apply to us.

Hate what's happened but I ain't blaming the other teams.

And why was it OK for the EAs to blatantly cheat and then be given special dispensation, even be praised for helping rugby? If they can get special treatment why can't a club that has won more, and done more over the years also be given special treatment?

I'll bite. What special treatment were they provided that we aren't? We're potentially getting our players loaned out immediately, just like Saracens.

Also Saracens didn't struggle to pay their players, quite the opposite. Where as we will struggle to pay ours soon.

I hate Sarries, but it's delusional to act like they were treated better (in a completely different situation to ours) than us. What do we want the Prem to do? Pay off our debts?

I think it’s more to do with Saracens being able to keep their shares after being found guilty of ( imo) a bigger fault than maybe us and Worcester. At least we were trying to keep within rules as laid down by PRL .Both cases have brought PRL into disrepute. I know rules have been drawn up , probably differentiating the type of punishment, but to say the shares have no capital value is absolutely shite.  If they are to be taken back by PRL both clubs should receive payment . It’s a wonder Worcester owners didn’t approach CVC to buy their percentage.

See we need clarity on if we will keep our shares or not, or what the hell prem decide to do with shares as part of their restructuring of the league.

My perception is there are 13 teams with PRL shares. There was always 1 relegated who kept their shares, Saracens got relegated and kept their shares. I don't have any problems with this.

The 10 team league stuff being touted prior to our situation being officially revealed may be insensitive, but this is a potential chain reaction situation. The other clubs are nervous and desperately need to sort it out (and from stuff we've heard today, the championship as well). Our collapse alongside Worcester has sadly been the instigator for this massive realisation English club rugby is atrociously mismanaged.

Players leaving, they have an uncertain future and need to play for England or have a career. Pretty simple. I'd do the same for company in uncertainty.

The shares stuff honestly who knows as if there are less teams do they even gain anything? They're playing less etc.

I'm not surprised we've had no sympathy or support because Prem rugby and the gang have no money too. And I wouldn't expect them to bail any club out as a result.

The Saracens thing, I hate them and wish they had their titles stripped. And somewhat argue they weren't punished enough. But I honestly believe they're not cheating anymore. Why would they have that scrum half or let Koch leave if they have infinite money? Just again feel it's a completely different situation.

Premiership rugby financially is absolutely terrible and we happen to be in a worst of a bad situation. I honestly think it's a gamble that didn't pay off. I'm angry that Derek and the gang claimed we wouldn't be in administration. I'd rather this be Saracens, but it's not, it's my club.

My anger is firmly directed at the other premier rugby clubs over the handling of Wasps and Worcesters P share.

Can someone please explain this? I currently blame the club and COVID, why are we blaming other clubs?

Can we talk about our problems without bringing up Saracens for once? I hate em as much as anyone, but for god's sake people, it's not relevant to our predicament.

Except it is.

Not really. Wasps are about £90m in debt. SOME of that will be us trying to match their level of wages, but in the main we let the players go, or failed to recruit a specific player and recruited a different one.

I would guess at least £80m of the debt is on us. Half for the stadium. Maybe more if you include the interest on the bonds. A lot of the rest was Covid. And it has been Covid that provided the tipping point, combined with the global economic effect of the war in Ukraine hitting costs and income. Oh, and the SISU shenanigans (I doubt that they ever paid us our costs, and maybe now the money we owe them for the pitch repairs).

I completely agree Sarries cheating didn't help the league Wrt salaries of other clubs.

But for us right now that just isn't relevant compared to the scale of the stadium finances, the move from London, COVID etc.

Charlie was at 10 in The Telegraph's Team of the Week.

Deserved, genuinely becoming an all rounder, and somewhat a likeable version of Owen Farrell.

Stooke, Koch, Willis and a fit Launchbury today and we would have won by 25 points.

Potentially, but we just don't know. Was excited by Koch's arrival, until he was immediately removed.
