Title: Salary Cap Biting Again?
Post by: Rossm on July 17, 2022, 04:49:08 PM
Freddie Steward's Leicester Tigers contract talks stall

Report from Bobby Bridge with his Tigers' hat on.

I would have thought he may have left it a tad late to get another berth.

This late in the day, very few clubs will have any room in their salary cap for paying him what he wants. One suspects Tigers wanted him to play this additional year for the same money, and he said 'No.'

Which is why they signed Watson. Makes sense now. I wonder if any team has the space in the cap for him, and how many need a full back of his calibre. I know one team that could do with a full back like him ...

Just pondering, we have fullback issues.... Do we have the £ necessary?

I mean true, but he's also arguably best fullback in the league. Koch is off with SA, we're happy with him!

We’re happy whenever existing players get selected for England and nobody talks about not giving them contract extensions because they’re always away.

I’d be more than happy to see him come in and if he is away a lot that’s an opportunity for younger or maybe even older players to learn from him and then show what they’ve learned.

I would have him, worth a good salary, also very young

It would be a bit odd if the extension is for this season, would it be more likely to be for the end of this season, its not particularly clear in the article and as said on here would be very late for him and Tigers?
If it was for the end of next season as an extension then they would still be looking to wrap it up now given other clubs could come calling informally in the next few months then formally a bit like they lost Ford and Genge.

Lee has said that we are not up to the limit on the salary cap and would consider recruiting if the right player(s) became available.

This is for the end of next season so nothing to see here really.
Talks have stalled because it’s the off season, he’s been away and his stock has raised considerably again after this tour and Leicester will just have to pay for that, which I’m sure they will.
Think he’d be silly to move at this stage too.
