Title: Squad 2019/20
Post by: Heathen on June 11, 2019, 02:34:33 PM
Picking up on Raggs previous post and recent announcements,

It does look as this will be the senior squad for next season :

LH : ZZ, McIntyre, Harris, West

Hooker : Cruse, Taylor, Johnson, Oghre

TH : JTA, Brookes, Daniels, Owlett, Alo

Locks: Launchbury, Rowlands, Gaskell, Matthews, Garratt, Cardell, Vukasinovic

Back row : Shields, J. Willis, Young, Reider, Morris, T. Willis, Carr, Vailanu

Scrumhalf : Robson, Vellacott, Porter

Flyhalf : Sopoaga, Searle

Centre : MLB, Neal, JdJ, Fekitoa, Gopps, Spink

Wing : Watson, Bassett, Sirker, Kibirige, Odowu

Fullback : Miller, Minozzi, James

47 players in total. I guess that Rob Miller will also offer an option at 10 as well as FB.

Looking forward to the new season. RWC should not disrupt us as much at others. A good opportunity to hit the ground running come GP time with great opportunities to use the PRC as a testing bed for different combos and for players to put their hands up.

Roll on September.

Good question.  I guess nobody outside the club and Umaga know (if indeed they do).

Maybe when the NZ season is over in a month will we then hear about him I wonder?

Looks strong to me. The only chink is at 12 if Gopperth gets injured for me but we do have cover/options. Sweating on news of Minozzi and Robson's fitness. That will be crucial.

Someone on the other site has siad Robson is at Loughborough Uni with other players (some Wasps some Eng players) doing fitness training, so its sounding hopeful.

Dobby has appeared in footage on his own as well as on Daly and Marcus Watsons Instagram feeds of training at Loughborough, Anthony Watson is also there.

I wonder if that is an Eng training session as Ford was there.. but someone said they saw Sirker?? Maybe its just a summer camp hosted by Loughborough Uni that anyone can attend, but given the constant monitoring the players are under, I doubt England or Wasps would allow their players to take part in training without permission?

Could Sirker be there as part of England Sevens squad?

I can't see Sirker making himself available for Eng 7's have just been promoted to the senior squad.. maybe whoever said he was there was mistaken.. but the same person said Marcus was there as well. Doesn't the 3rd Watson brother play for Loughborough Uni.. maybe they all know each other via the 7's scene?

Over to Andermt to see if he can confirm who he's seen there or not.

I have to confess to being a little lost with our signings now. Can anyone do a like for like comparison (i.e. Daly out, replaced with Fekiota etc)?

Thanks, WallyWasp by name...

I was in Loughborough on Sunday too. Picking up my partner's son's stuff after he finished at the uni.

Didn't see any rugby players, but that was probably because we only went to his house and the pub 😀

Great Uni - I did my MSc. there - never been so fit! Good pubs and great countryside too

I did engineering, so haunted the pubs more than anything!

Theres nothing very odd about players arranging their own specific training. Remember Wasps players getting speed training with Margot Wells back in the day?

Robson, Daly & both Marcus & ANthony Watson are at a clinic being run by Speedworks

Sirker may be there, he's instagram shows he's in Loughborough Uni but no other evidence I can see

Yes looks like training the players had organised off their own backs.

Sirker was there originally with the Watson brothers and there was a post from the organiser saying he’d worked with Sirker for years.
Now it seems Daly, Ford and Robson are doing some work there.

Sirker has posted a picture of himself at Loughborough, nothing showing him with the others but an assumption could be made. As none of them are in any club branded kit I took it as something the players have put together themselves

I played cricket with many of the engineers - some of whom I am still in contact with in India! I did a Management MSc. - the Rec Man MSc which was popular in the day - and was interesting until I realised I didn't like the public much!

I enjoyed the pubs and got a free pass to the post grad ones - which was nice - the one I used to go to on the canal has been built on now!

Ahh, The Albion!  That was the only pub serving when the snow caused all the power in the town to go down for a few days.  Their Christmas Noggin was legendary!

I didn’t go to Loughborough but my brother in law did economics there, played golf for Loughborough (a decent 4 handicap) and also was in the ultimate Frisbee team! I don’t know they had a frisbee team.  :)

I don't think there is such a clear comparison. Dai has put together a bigger squad with lots of younger players and less superstars. I doubt anyone can (yet) kick like Daly or pull off a WLR type of tap on under pressure.

I fancy that every member of the squad will be challenged to take their game to the next level. Competition for shirts will be intense, especially from the younger guys in the squad.

Yep - that's the one - brain fart my end. The engineers took me there! It was an odd place but nice vinyl furniture from memory!

I appreciate it probably isn't as clear cut as that, but roughly speaking do we think that core areas that we have lost due to transfers/retirements/attempts to play NFL have been accounted for? Not knowing enough about some of our signings it would be good to see roughly how it has shaped up in the in vs the out in terms of positions and "like for like" players as it were.

As I said in my original post... I'm confused!

My overall feeling is that we have a better squad this coming season than we did the season just gone. There's a couple of positions that might need a bit of attention but we have a much larger squad than we've had in seasons.

A few players found form and fitness towards the end of this season, some will have gained another invaluable 12 months extra fitness, experience, and then we have a posse of eager young blood to add a bit of vitality and competition back into the squad.

We've lost 3 internationals and one former international .. but if you weren't aware of that fact beforehand, from watching their input, leadership and effect on team performance through the season.. would anyone have guessed?

Because of the academy input to the list, I like the balance of EQP and foreign flags against the incomers. Not quite as good as Bath, but certainly the right way round to my mind. 1 or 2 external hires to bring in "proven quality" is fine, but we really want to see a production line of talent in the years to come.

As an aside, interesting to see Tom Varndell off to HK to play in the Global Rapid Rugby series. Yet another comp to keep an eye on. His best days may be behind him, but can't blame him for jumping at the chance to experience something new before it ends.

I was an engineer, that is probably be why I liked the place.  When were you there?

1987/88

The guy who was in charge of post grade accommodation was an engineer and keen wicket keeper and their team (of engineers) was fun to play with in the summer. I mainly played cricket there - rugby was too high a standard! I didn't play again until 88/89 with a team of PE teachers back in Thames Valley.

A sports faculty lecturer got me and a student colleague to go and play for Quorn at cricket - which was fun - probably my favourite educational experience - shame it was only one year - but a good friend moved to not far off and I got to revisit a lot up to about 12 years ago. Been a long time since I last went

I was there 1987/91 so I would have been around at a similar time. I did Chemical Engineering, played rugby once for my hall (Elvyn Richards)but never cricket. We didn't really mix much with the post grad except in inter year course competitions.

Small world! I was in post grad accommodation - Just outside campus - a row of houses Borrowdale way?? So I was living with post grads many from India and all cricket mad. Needed a seam bowler!

The opportunity to play sports was mad - I played volleyball and all sorts as my class was basically 32 sports mad people - wanting to be involved in recreation professionally - so if you didn't fancy sports - you were def in the wrong place!

You are right. You could do almost anything.  I played mainly football and hockey and a bit of rugby (when sides were very very short of players!). Hockey was my thing back then and cycling. I recall even the hall standard was pretty good. I played for Derby 2nds, but only flirted with the 4ths at Loughborough.

I realised that I wasn't going to play cricket for the Uni when there were people in sponsored cars around! I played decent level league cricket but was nowhere near!

I only had a year - so it was running then cricket and drinking real ale!

I remember Steve Backley being there in his car.  We were playing football on the top pitch and I went to get the ball which had hit his car.  It said 'Steve Backley Javlin World Record Holder'.  The very next week the same happened, but in the meantime there had been a Diamond League (or whatever it was called then) meeting so the car read 'Steve Backley Former Javlin World Record Holder'!.  We did have a bit of a smile.
