Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Ex Wasps signing for new clubs

Because they’re cheats. Looking at the line ups there is at least 4 internationals on the bench as well. And lo and behold - they’re walking away with the league!
Saw a clip on Facebook the other day showing the top 10 earners in rugby union for 2022 and Saracens had two in there Owen and Mario, the article was quoting there salary in SA Rand but roughly equated to £1.7 million between them. Now that’s a very big chunk of their cap on two players

Similar to Bristol with Semi and Piatau

I haven't yet heard exactly what was said, but supposedly it was a 'Your Mum' type comment.  Childish and unneccessary and only caused the reaction it did because the guys Mum is unwell and in hospital back home in NZ.

If that is the case and if Marler didn't know this then a couple of weeks on the sidelines seems fair.  We can't keep on trying to steralise the game to death.

Launch has signed for Quins for next season.

Dan Robson is someone who hasn't signed elsewhere for next season (as far as i'm aware) and embodies what Wasps are all about.

From a selection perspective:

- Jettison Hill; I don't mind Coles/Ribbans but ideally Itoje, Lawes and Launchbury for me
- Balance out the back-row. I don't mind Lawes playing there for tactical reasons (vs SA for the lineout, for example) but not on a regular basis.  Wills needs to be involved for his turnover abilities.  I would also have Ben Earl back in the fold.  Dombrandt hasn't managed to match the magic at Club Level in an England shirt (but neither did Simmonds).  Personally, i'd be happy with a 6,7,8 or J.Willis, Curry and Earl with Billy on the bench, or Billy to start at 8 with Earl on the bench to provide cover.  Willis, Curry and Earl are all 80 minute players with a brilliant all-rounders
- Phase out Youngs and keep giving gaming to the string of talented 9s that we're producing; JvP, Quirke etc... If we want a 9 with a decent box kicking game, let's bring Spencer back into the hold
- Pick Farrell or Smith to start and the other on the bench
- The biggest conundrum is 12.  Who plays there? Lawrence/Slade not 12s but talented ball players.  Smith/Farrell hasn't really worked.  Dan Kelly is coming back from injury, but about all I can think of who is actually an English 12?
- Lots of options at 13 all who are very talented; can pick on form - Daly, Slade, Lawrence, Manu shows real depth
- Same with Wingers, pick them on form with an emphasis on pace.  I quite like Nowell, but not doing as much as he used to.  We've got an abundance of rapid wingers; May, Watson, OHC, Arundel, Radwan, Loader and that's before we get to the likes of Freeman, Nowell and Cokanasiga.  Steward is solid; but perhaps we keep Arundel on the bench to come on and frighten the life out of teams

Wasn't it the RFU who imposed the deadline in the first place?!

An incredible player and thoroughly likable guy.  His career was a real tale of two halves though and i'm still not sure whether the Simmo 2.0 we saw who seemed to spend more time box-kicking possession away and pondering options at the base of a ruck was due to Joe, Dai or England Coaches.

He was someone who played at a ferocious pace early on and the moment he saw a chink in the defence in front of him he was gone.  It was a lot of fun watching those days.

I think BT have grounds to kick up a stink this season, the product being supplied is not the product they thought they were getting. Admittedly that depends on the wording of the contract, but you can bet that they will be ultra-cautious for next season.

I think BT would be quite happy with the quality of the games they're showing at the moment.  The Prem games this season have largely been exciting with good rugby played.  That's great from a TV perspective.  We may well have a jaded view of the competition not being quite so good without us in it, but i'm not sure many non-Wasps/Warriors fans would agree with that.

BT opting to negotiate down their deal because of the number of teams involved being cut by 2 would likely exacerbate problems, than solve anything.  If they're seeking to re-negotiate because of an impact to subscriber/viewing figures then that's very different, but i've not read anything suggest there's been a hit on those.

Has anyone else?

I'm sure both CVC and PRL would be very keen for a bigger slice of the pie and can afford it.

I'm sure Sarries, Bath, Bristol will have no problems forking out the case to purchase.  But what about the rest.  Opens a bit of a can of worms...

Selfishly Oxford would be great.  Not too many 5k-10k Stadium options within a sensible distance of the EPIC.

Am I correct in thinking that it's a mandatory purchase split by % of shareholding by the remaining shareholders and for example, Sarries, Bath and Bristol can't buy extra portions of the Shares that, say, Irish and Falcons might not be able to afford to buy?

So is that £19.6m split via the 13 entities - 11 Clubs, PRL and CVC.

CVC own 30%, leaving £13.72m split between PRL and the 11 Clubs, which equates to approx £1.25m per club.

If the Telegraph article is to be believed, it's an extra £250k income per Club with the extra shareholding (although unclear if that's the combined extra income for both ours and Warriors P-Shares or £250k x2).

How are the Clubs paying for this?

Whilst I cannot warm to the personality of Jones, nor the micromanagement of the game by him and his team, I do not see Borthwick as a significant improvement in matters.

I'm torn on the whole scenario overall.  The lack of openness around why they feel like they're struggling for form is extremely frustrating.  They don't need to give the keys to the Kingdom tactically, but at least demonstrate that for the 80,000 people and sponsors putting not insignificant sums into the game that you're aware you've underperformed and how/why.

Genge almost seemed surprised on last weeks The Good, The Bad and The Rugby Pod that the England win rate in 2022 was 42%.  I'm not quite sure what he thought it would be?

Eddie says the results are his fault, Ellis says it's the players letting Eddie down and that they operate in a player-led environment.  He speaks about Eddie giving them several different ways to play depending on the opposition and that the playing group are able to use those on the pitch to change the game.

But, for 2022, watching the games it's been the same boring, predictable one-out type rugby or heavy kick-chase other than the last 10 mins or so of the first test vs Australia (when Oz were down to 14 and then 13 men) or the last 10 mins against NZ (who had a man in the bin during that period) and when both games were largely out of sight and England had nothing to lose.

Are the differences so nuanced that pundits and fans would struggle to notice? Or are they just not being used?

Genge is a forthright, hardworking old-fashioned honest bloke but weirdly seemed to suggest that their form had actually been pretty good - 'world beaters' for scoring 20 points in 9 minutes against the All Blacks was something he referenced.  He spoke about hating losing; but there was nothing to suggest the playing group recognised the uninspiring, predictable way that they're playing despite the talent available.

Love Gats, but they're welcome to him.  Not convinced he's the answer for England.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Our former tenants

Wasps had approached the council for a grant to undertake the work, as they were the owners. The council responded saying it was the responsibility of the tenants (leaseholders) to fix any issues. It was one of many reasons it all folded like a house of cards.

Was this what the mooted £13m grant application was for? (that was discussed but never formally applied for?)

Wasps had identified major issues at the stadium meaning it needed (at Least £20m) spending on it. That is why he got it so cheap.

This was reported by some of the SBT, but I don't think we ever saw anything publicaly referenced about it - Where has the figure come from and what's the issues at the Stadium?

Somewhat off topic, but having increased my watching of Top 14 rugby recently, I am sure that Elliot would have been better off going to a top French team rather than Saracens. Unless the real estate on offer was exceptional.

It'd be worth him going there now for sure.  Back then, think keeping his England place was more important.
