Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Tier 2 Update - RFU

I would sign up for that, and get to any games local to me (ish). As long as they have motorbike parking (you too Coddy)?

Definitely mate, luckily a motorbike can be parked practically anywhere.

I hope you are right Coddy, I really do. I also hadn't quite appreciated how low the attendance for Champ games is.

If you're referring to ealing they're a bit of a weird outlier as they're effectively a club elevated far beyond their support levels and infrastructure by virtue of having a sugar daddy owner bankrolling a squad they'd never be able to afford otherwise.

Average attendances for the season to date below - there's quite a varied number- but I think most are quite self explanatory for why they're high/low compared to the others!

Average Attendances:
Coventry 3440
Bedford 3063
Doncaster 1884
C. Pirates 1611
Cambridge 1411
Caldy 1182
Nottingham 1158
Ampthill 1069
Ealing 1008
Hartpury 994
L. Scottish 608

What's the source on that, Robson9? I'd be interested to see how Cov & Bedford stack up against Prem attendances for season to date.

Interesting numbers.

Yes those are legitimate numbers as taken from Wikipedia. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023%E2%80%9324_RFU_Championship

I apologise for underestimating Ealings support, they seem to either get well over 1100 or less than 800 suggesting a number of their supporters are probably bored watching them give the weaker teams a dicking.

I think Wasps would probably average 2-3 thousand a game in their first season back

What are you basing that on Coddy?

Not being argumentative, genuine question.

I'm thinking the new management team will pull out all the stops when it comes to marketing to attract new fans

I think a fair number of Wasps fans that didn't travel up from the South East will replace those lost from the West Midlands

I think the Wasps brand will attract a good number of away team supporters desperate to see their team beat us

There are still many supporters all over the country who won't have given up on Wasps and who still believe in the Once a Wasp, Always a Wasp
mantra.

All IMHO of course.

[ but IMO I Can't see Wasps, (or LI & Wuss) attracting the support necessary to make it worthwhile getting them into that "Tier 2"

Really? Even if Ealing Trailfinders are topping the league table every season with attendance figures of around 750?

I think Wasps would probably average 2-3 thousand a game in their first season back.

Most importantly at half time it could have been 3 English clubs in the semis - not quite the doom and gloom scenario some were forecasting

The doom and gloom is aimed at the millions of pounds the English sides are losing every year and not so much the quality of the playing squad.

I foresee a gradual decline for Saracens over the next 4-5 years.

After their recent tankings by Northampton and Bordeaux-Begles, I'm pretty certain it's well under way already.

I think the club has put too much time and effort for option 1 to happen.

I'd guess the RFU will put a big enough carrot or stick to the current championship sides to make option 2 happen

I think option 3 is less likely than option 2

Losing Irish and Wasps in particular won't help TV viewing figures.

You would think so, but possibly not:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/68625302

"Millions of fans have helped break viewership records this year"

Whatever spin they put on, it's obvious the viewing figures would of been higher with Wasps, Wuss and Irish
competing in the Premiership.

Who do you suggest then?

Farrell Snr doesn't seem to be doing a bad job.

I spoke to a person I know who has contacts inside at Worcester. He told me two separate people at Worcester said in past month URC is Wasps first choice, potentially taking a Welsh Franchise but RFU is fighting it to keep in new Prem structure. However some old friends in the Championship are fighting Wasps return there!

Very good news that a stadium and finances are in place.

So the RFU want us in a newly formed Prem 2 but a significant number of Championship clubs will fight that and Wasps want to join the URC but the RFU are fighting that.

Interesting times.

How are motor bikers managing, WWW?  We're waiting for them to arrive over the border from Abergavenny in massed hordes.  All doing  80 mph and going vvvvrrrrmmmmm.  Surely a motor bike going at 20 mph is going to fall over??

Wonky has reminded of an old joke

Is the motorbike still for sale?

Yes

What's the lowest you can go on it?

About 4mph, any less and I'll tip over!

www,
I only went once, but it was the day of the Valentine Day's massacre!

You lucky bugger! The only time I visited the place was when they beat us easily in a Play Off Semi Final.
