Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: England

What worries me us that when we get knocked out there will be another investigation into why we did so badly which comes to the conclusion that, far from being too Borthwickian, we weren't Borthwickian enough.

I say that partly tongue in cheek but there's more than an element of truth in there.

Ah yes, but for me that is not something to worry about. For the RWC, the damage was long ago done. Can it get rescued by the next RWC? Not sure. But we have enough time for 2031, assuming I am still around by then.

It's possible. Reinstating the age group emphasis would be a useful step regardless - to ensure that in '31 there are still good junior players coming through. Just like from 2008 onwards.

But for the next RWC, it will require some quite brave decisions on selection of players, central contracts or similar, relationships with clubs and perhaps a new coach. The damage was done mainly with a set of players that mostly ought not be in consideration for the next 6Ns, let alone the RWC 27.

England have lost a lot of talent by pee'ing people about, have done similar since 2019 with the assistant coaching team and were increasingly - it seems - drawn into a Jones master plan. When there really wasn't one.

So I'd hope by 6Ns next year, we've seen the back of Farrell, Youngs, Care, Manu, both Vuni's, Lawes, George, Cole, Marler, Daly and May. And we're looking at a very different selection and mindset. I don't think there's a lack of talent to be at least competent. It was 4 6N's ago we were last competent. And that was off the back of the RWC.

But damn all will happen without the RFU accepting that it's not the all seeing and all powerful visionaries they think they are. So, I'm not hopeful.

Several things come together with England - that really require a line in the sand if change is going to come....

The investment in age group especially from around 2006, led to England getting good results at JRWC and I saw a back three of Wade, Watson and Yarde tear apart a more than decent Wales U-20 team in the 6N's. It was very liberating to watch

Lancaster was starting to make progress. I think he was underrated. 80% 6Ns record and touring NZ, and beating them in a really good AI performance - before the RWC foul up. And that conveyor belt of player from the U-20's was handed over to Jones...Who was called a genius for winning one GS, but managed to also produce 3 of the equal worst 6Ns ever whilst seemed enthralled by the Sarries "mafia". All whilst pee'ing off players (my bias) like Dan R who were never given a chance. And giving games to players like Martin from Tigers when he's played less than 8 Prem games....

One really good (Japan-a-like) win in the RWC was allowed to reinforce the all powerful Jones' position. And that surely built the regime that had 17 assistant coaches over a short period and post 2020 a clear drop off in both performance and results and seemingly attitude within the camp. We got the hint with John Mitchell joining. And when Jones was sacked - Nick Evans reported (in Graniad article) that England had no systems and were lacking, generally.

And that allowance of all the good work done with junior/age group teams to go to waste whilst England played increasingly at the whim of the coach and we see the evidence of all those failings in a performance like that vs Samoa. England, an unlikeable and poorly performing team.

And if the rumours are correct for this w/e - Ford dropped, OF at 10 and Smith at 15....Seems like making it up as you go along - with the undropable Farrell at the heart of matters.

We'll only see if this was all "just for the RWC" when we see the squad for the 2024 6Ns. But the Jones/Sarries era has not made supporting England an easy gig.....

What struck me most was how the entertainment level rose each time Samoa had the ball and disappeared when England had it. There was a 10 minute period in the second half when we just reset scrum after scrum before Care went over. England are incredibly poor. They are dull into the bargain. Then throw in Farrell and Vunipola whining like children to the ref. We?ll get smashed by anyone a bit more clinical and possibly Fiji. The worst thing of all is I can?t get myself to be disappointed about it due to the way they play and behave.
That's fair. Being dull and poor really is tedious. I really was hoping they would score at the end, after that break!

Re the Sarries players - I suppose I ought not have been surprised - but OF seemed to be seeking out every bit of niggle and trying to wind up people who really didn't care. That we picked OF and Manu at 12 and 13 and then seemed surprised that the midfield wasn't going well indicated a team/coaching set up that really isn't looking at what is going on. Or there's a central clique that can't be dropped....

Farrell was substituted on 58 minutes with Borthwick clearly furious as he threw a pass. Youngs came on at 9 and 10 to tighten things up and Marcus Smiths stepometer read 7 once the 80 minutes was done.

Thank you for making a huge grin break out! That was v funny......

Base competence would do.....(in hope rather than expectation of course!)

But it does make me wonder what goes on at club training when when I see that and read something like this on the Beeb:

Quote
Scrum-half Danny Care says England have been working on their tackle technique every day as they look to improve their discipline for the upcoming World Cup.

I know for a lot of the older players they are having to change years, decades, of habit but the tackle laws got changed a at least a year ago and they should have had the habits changed by now. Its not like they're amateurs training once or maybe twice a week, its their full time job.

Indeed - but if you make a tackle like Farrell did - then it's deliberate. It was about height...but he still led with a shoulder and made no attempt to wrap. That's not been allowed for way more than year. And YouTube has loads of compilations of tackles v similar to that from last time. And he's of a temperament that made that decision to pole-axe Charlie. He's only ever had remorse when it suits. That was the sort of assault of someone who is deliberately taking people out, without regard to the laws. And i showed again last time out.

This was very interesting
Quote
It doesn?t mean Borthwick isn?t right for the job. He has clearly grown from a player to a coach. He over took a very wooden system left by Eddie. Which is a very tough job to get the players to unlearn what was ingrained in them
Since the 2020 6Ns when England used the backbone of the 2019 WC team to carry on the "focus". That WC team of course - being based on the one which did so well at U-20's level and was winning 80% of 6Ns games prior to the 2015 WC. And given what Lancaster has done since....perhaps we were unfortunate with that tournament's outcome. One which facilitated hiring jones. A man renown for short term gains but also for losing the dressing room and not liking challenge (Hence the turnover of coaches - all 17 of them....)

So that period from the Junior world cup wins/performances that left a legacy of players essentially ran out of steam almost the same time as "Peak Jones". And since the 100% and 91% win percentage years - it's been a record of decent years alongside (under Jones) three awful 6Ns (winning 2 of 5) a few opportune wins to "bolster the myth" but - for me - an underlying concern about a team that could win any game (if prepared like crazy for that one game - Jones' speciality - Japan vs SA, England vs NZ etc.) but was increasingly looking like it was being found out and ideas were running out?

I'm uncertain I have many ideas about anything in the short term. But England must look to the future from next 6Ns....

I've never really worked out what the problem is with Farrell. But on the surface there seems two issues - but they might be linked by "entitlement".....

This tackle was a red all day long, the tackled player didn't dip and if anything, was saved from a full on shoulder tackle to the head by any movement. But Farrell didn't even attempt to do any of the things that are required by a legal tackle.....And looking at the vid seemed bang to rights, not wrapping or getting lower and looking to "impose" on the tackled player.

The connection is with my view of Farrell (Wasps-centric view of course) when he laid out Charlie. That seemed more because he'd been made to look a little pedestrian perhaps? And didn't like it.....And that level of entitlement is what seems to drive him to "tackle how I want to" and to "smack a youngster"....

Neither. Jones was deliberately bizarre. Borthwick is just beige.
When he was one of Jones' assistants, England were playing mostly well - perhaps at times performing as well as could be hoped for. But, (c.f. 6Ns 2018/SA Tour) too often looking like they didn't understand the script.

Regardless - a beige Borthwick that's only doing the forwards (which I think was the case) and didn't have to do media - or not much - was in his element? But like too many experts in many walks of life/business I've come across, you'd probably not have them in charge.....It's quite rare that people manage to be both (expert/in charge)

The current England situation is a result of a number of factors, but after deciding Jones was going to end of RWC '23, a sacking and appointment of a "beige" coach probably wasn't going to go well. And I'm at the point of looking forwards to watching some good rugby (no not from England) and hoping that 6Ns 2024 shows England looking forwards.

Perhaps Borthwick can be a really good "fall guy"?

Desperate times for the game. Just not enough money around outside of 5-6 individuals.
This. And they seemed to have the "hold" on the RFU such that they (RFU?) thought the sugar daddy model was an appropriate one for pro rugby in England.....as these people know best....

I'm guessing more than one Prem club to go this season and as NWW suggests - a virtually amateur Championship.

Cooperation appears to be too much of a dirty word around the RFU....

Whilst this will sound rather petty - I was more than a little pleased that SA thrashed Jones' Australia...Lots of BS from the man about how good the Aussies would be - they seemed rather lost - not unlike England were over much of the last three years......

His core point for me is the crux of the problem. The PRL marks it?s own homework.

The worst thing that can happen for elite rugby is that the 10 limp on. Interest will wane, the game will die. One more unfortunate soul to the wall and it is too obvious that it's untenable and change must happen. Bad for whoever that is in the short term but it's what the game needs.
This. I'm afraid it is going to limp on until it's too late for the game in England.

Some pointers from the training squad to what England might look like post RWC. I'd be pleased if Tom W gets to the RWC, but more expect him to be given the chance for 6Ns 2014. Post world cup. I'd be keen to see Martin involved, now he's got Prem time and has shown what he's capable of and VPR ditto. I'd hope that the indications of younger and lower/no capped players is an indication of where the team is going post WC. Hopefully England are looking at this RWC as the one off chance that it is for those who've not performed over several 6Ns back to 2020 (when it looked ok but never kicked on)

The hope is that the 2024 6Ns is taken as the start of a new cycle to RWC 2027 and that England hold their nerve as "retreating" back to players well the wrong side of 30 at the first hint of problems will only make worse, surely?
