Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Tier 2 Update - RFU
« on: April 23, 2024, 03:14:48 PM »
I hope you are right Coddy, I really do. I also hadn't quite appreciated how low the attendance for Champ games is. You are right that any interest in those lost clubs, however low, could only be a boost & you do wonder why the other clubs aren't keener?

For me it all depends on the composition of the squad/management, the competition they are playing in & the length of time before things actually happen.

All the marketing in the world isn't going to get new fans to watch a team of unknowns play a club they've never heard of.

Is it even Wasps if its just a franchise team with no link to the past other than a few old players fronting it & a badge? Even if it is will I care if they play in a competition I might have serious reservations about?

Maybe other supporters have made up their minds either way but for me, I can't decide until I see where it all ends up.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: US league anyone?

Usual inaccurate click bait headline:
Quote
Exclusive: The US is an option for Wasps? revival, Kenny Logan reveals

when of course no where in the article does it say that, it says:
Quote
?Plenty of people want Wasps back. It seems we?ve had every league in the world ask ?do you want to come back and play with us? ? including as a US franchise in Major League Rugby.?

No one said its an option or indeed likely. If playing in the URC wasn't nonsense enough, now we get this!

I think Wasps would probably average 2-3 thousand a game in their first season back

What are you basing that on Coddy?

Not being argumentative, genuine question.

As far as I can recall it has always been a 25/26 reentry (if it is to happen). The PRL planned all along to up the funding cap next season and the RFU seemed to suggest after that levels off a change can occur

Thanks, that makes sense (sort of!)
It's been reported that the RFU/PRL are keen to see the 3 broken clubs back in "Tier 2" because of the supporters, their history, investment potential etc etc. but IMO I Can't see Wasps, (or LI & Wuss) attracting the support necessary to make it worthwhile getting them into that "Tier 2"

The interesting thing for me is that the French clubs actually want English players. Given that they have quite strict rules on foreign players in each squad & all of the southern hemisphere to chose from I wonder if English players are relatively cheap compared to others & what that says about salaries in the prem!

Season 2024-25 will be a Championship of 12 clubs, comprising the 11 existing Championship clubs and the winner of National One (Chinnor RFC).

Council approved a process for existing Championship clubs to validate and evidence their ability to meet the ?essential? minimum operating standards, and other matters, in order to participate in the new Tier 2 league, which will ultimately be decided by the Tier 2 Management Board.

So no room for Wasps, or LI & Wuss next season.

So is there a "Championship" next season with a new potentially expanded "Tier2" the season after? Is that what is being proposed?

I think its more likely that the Champ clubs, seeing that the RFU & PRL want the 3 lost clubs back, are trying to use that as a bargaining chip to get a better deal.

While his word do sound very patronising is he actually wrong?
Out of the English qualified players not playing in England how many would actually be in the squad?
Marchant, Arundell & Willis perhaps, but any others?

After their recent tankings by Northampton and Bordeaux-Begles, I'm pretty certain it's well under way already.

But then only a few weeks ago the destroyed Quins. I expect them to be in the mix for play offs, sadly.
However, undoubtedly they will find it harder to compete at the top level when cheating is more difficult.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: So what do we think is happening?
« on: April 04, 2024, 04:23:52 PM »
I think a franchised prem 2 will happen, with or without all the Champ clubs being involved.
No idea whether that will have promotion to prem 1 or promotion from whatever is below prem 2, nor whether any promotion comes with non playing requirements like un-realistic stadia or other nonsense like how many social media followers you have!
When? can't see anything being in place for the 24-25 season given the current massive gulf between the PRL & Champonship.
Not sure I would want to actually be part of such a competition, but that will depend on the details which don't exist at the moment.
Equally I don't think I would want to be part of the URC either (no salary cap, no relegation/promotion, pretty unrealistsic away days, dubious quality & no England players in the team) and I am not sure that would ever happen anyway either.
As for a 28k stadium in Kent & sustainable finance etc, sorry, but in the absence of a competition to play in I can't believe any of that is going to happen either.
So option 1 seems the likeliest outcome IMO.

I didn't watch the game but I understand Northampton were pinged for 9 not using it after 5 seconds during Friday evening's game. Luke Pearce was the ref.

Luke Pearce did a very good job of hurrying the game along. Pinged Saints for too long at the ruck, & didn't allow time wasting of any kind.
Wasn't to sure about him hurrying Fin Smith along with a conversion though, he's allowed 90 seconds, no ref should be hurrying that up, IMO...

Exeter did even less, which is Wonky?s point.

Really?
They took an academy player, who had never played in a prem game & within a season he was an England international.....
If they had done nothing he would still be a squad player, which, if Wasps hadn't gone under, I suspect he still would be. IMO of course.

I watched Sale trounce Execeter this pm.  Exec. got one unconverted try, scored by Feyi-Oboso (think I got that last bit wrong, sorry); he was described by Topsy Ojo as an example of how Exec. took raw, untrained talent from Universities and Championships and turned them into extraordinary players.  I nearly threw the TV out of the window. I used to like Ojo but was shocked by his lack of research.  Quelle prat.

well wasps did very little for his development, he played 2 Prem cup games, that was all.

The Dutch banned these pitches years ago.

Not quite, its due to take effect from 2030 onwards
https://ministryofsport.com/the-netherlands-to-phase-out-artificial-turf-over-health-and-environmental-concerns/

& even then they can't say for definite they are dangerous, just that they might not be safe:
"Tempering the findings to a certain extent, cancer specialist Bob Lowenberg pointed out, ?There is absolutely no evidence that artificial grass pitches are bad for you, but we can?t definitively say they are safe. I think there is every reason to be concerned about artificial grass pitches.?
