Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Tier 2 Update - RFU
« on: April 24, 2024, 12:03:54 PM »
I hope you are right Coddy, I really do. I also hadn't quite appreciated how low the attendance for Champ games is.

If you're referring to ealing they're a bit of a weird outlier as they're effectively a club elevated far beyond their support levels and infrastructure by virtue of having a sugar daddy owner bankrolling a squad they'd never be able to afford otherwise.

Average attendances for the season to date below - there's quite a varied number- but I think most are quite self explanatory for why they're high/low compared to the others!

Average Attendances:
Coventry 3440
Bedford 3063
Doncaster 1884
C. Pirates 1611
Cambridge 1411
Caldy 1182
Nottingham 1158
Ampthill 1069
Ealing 1008
Hartpury 994
L. Scottish 608

What's the source on that, Robson9? I'd be interested to see how Cov & Bedford stack up against Prem attendances for season to date.

Interesting numbers.

Sort of related, and seems like the best place to put this.... here's a quiz on the starting line-ups for the last 4x seasons.

https://www.sporcle.com/games/tcullen746/opening-match-line-ups-wasps-rugby

I got 84%, but kicking myself because I missed some obvious ones!

Preference would be for #3. New games, new opponents, new grounds to visit. Two fingers up to the RFU.

Without getting into the whole "what is Prem 2" thing (especially around P-shares for current Prem clubs etc) and whether the RFU want to emulate the successful French Top 14 / Pro D2 model (difference being they all have an equal say across all 30 clubs) and *if* it can be made to work then option #2 would be agreeable.

Realistically though? #1

RIL on Twitter / X reporting that Sarries are after Sam Spink for next season.

Sam's in Australia playing (pretty well) for Western Force in Super Rugby.

Edit: that said, I see they got hammered at home on Saturday. Sam played the full 80' though.

Wish him well, a shame.

On his day he was electric. Suspect that without the injuries he could have been even better - imagine him adding value to the resurgent Azzurri now.

Go well, Matteo.

Also, btw, forza Italia! What a performance yesterday.

How'd you manage that Wonky? I click the button and it just directs to the same homepage, nothing happens.

Tried on Chrome and IE, both same.

+1 same.

Interesting that funding is in place. Assume the stadium in question is Sixways.

Remaining question is whether the revamped "Championship" is a suitable competition which would tick the boxes.

Yeah, assumed there would be loads but couldn't think and type at the same time. Some very obvious ones in there!

Cheers.

Not sure   -  you could be right.  But considering it's Jimmy I reckoned he deserved a mention at least, especially as he is still playing.    Is Ash still coaching?

Still coaching at Moseley, also involved in Midlands Central Academy (the Wasps DPP replacement) I believe.

Can confirm that involvement.

Also, looking at that list, and how some of the players have come through and made names for themselves this season it really does give you a sense of "what might have been".

Ah well.

Elliot Millar-Mills called up by Scotland.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/68066065

Ah, the famously Scottish Elliot Millar-Mills whose sister Harriet has 60 England caps  ;D

To be fair, their Mum is Scottish (according to Wikipedia).

Are there any other instances of siblings representing different national sides?

Wasn't there some concern about Viaplay reducing their footprint back in the Summer? I looked at the options for Top14, but there was a suggestion Viaplay might drop their UK coverage of it and concentrate on other markets.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Kent!
« on: October 24, 2023, 08:01:30 AM »
I'll buy into it.

Kent is way too far for a regular commitment, but away games will be the staple. As others have said there will be a lead-time of some 5-6 years where we'll be Worcester based in all likelihood, so in the meantime that's a happy medium.

A trip to a "home" game will be quite the adventure!

https://wasps.co.uk/club-announcements/wasps-announces-plans-for-new-stadium-development-in-kent/

The club is actively engaged with Sevenoaks District Council to identify a suitable location and ensure that the development meets both the needs of the club and the broader community.

Building on the rich 156-year history of Wasps, this move signifies a new chapter in the club's journey, reaffirming its commitment to professional rugby. In a statement on 17 October the club discussed its strategic journey since October 2022. Having faced significant challenges with regulation and funding, the club has persisted with its determination to revive Wasps at the highest possible level.

As the development progresses through its planning stages, Wasps will be actively exploring temporary facilities to underpin its operations in Kent. Whilst determined to establish a base in the southeast of England, the club has also agreed an option of utilising Worcester Warriors? Sixways ground for both training and playing purposes, without in anyway replacing Worcester Warriors RFC and indeed committed to assisting their return to competitive rugby.

A Wasps spokesperson said: "The journey of Wasps has been one of passion, resilience, and commitment to the game. Our determination to secure a new, sustainable future for the club has never been stronger. By working with Sevenoaks District Council, we hope to build a long-lasting legacy that acknowledges our storied past and charts an ambitious future.

...

As a Cov Wasps fan, that's a hell of a trek for "home games"!
