Wasps Rugby Discussion / Cray Valley Paper Mill v Charlton
« on: November 04, 2023, 08:55:08 AM »
Just watched a news piece about Cray Valley Paper Mill who will be playing Charlton tomorrow. Despite dizzy heights football's top leagues have reached, football has maintained the connection between the levels of the game. Contrast rugby putting up barriers to promotion and even having different rules for lower leagues.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / England v Chile Match Report
« on: September 23, 2023, 08:12:17 AM »
After a beautiful soporific display of ball handling that would challenge the leather working skills of a master sadler, England are sailing through to the knockout stages.

There were times in the game where it started to look doubtful as errors by Chile went un-cheered and the fist pumps looked decidedly lack luster. It turned out there was nothing to worry about, Borthwick was on the case. He was seen to mumble something to Sinfield who clearly had no idea what Borthwick was on about, but brought Ben Earl on. The change was immediate, fist pumps, double fist pumps, whoops and cheers all flowed with aplomb.

The RFU made a robust statement pointing out that it is now clear that England's critics are totally wrong. The statement noted how England have demonstrated their creativity, pointing to the multitude of slightly different ways to kick the ball. The RFU council also commented "It is about time the nation start to realise they are watching the game incorrectly and have misunderstood the England games. They need to learn to celebrate with the enthusiasm demonstrated by the team."

CEO changed, finances heading in the wrong direction. Sounds familiar.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Wasps FC
« on: May 22, 2023, 09:32:43 AM »
Does anyone with links to Wasps FC know what their thoughts are about a semi-professional Wasps RFC starting from the bottom?

Starting at the bottom seems like it could be quite a ride and in some ways I find it more appealing than some of the other options floating around.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Cap relaxation for older players
« on: September 06, 2021, 08:58:50 AM »
Just read the article about Banahan linked below. His experience is probably mirrored by many players that get dropped by a club they have a strong association with, Haskell springs to mind. If clubs were exempted some of the cap for players like these perhaps it would give a few more options for players and clubs. For example a cap exemption/reduction for players that have played at a club for something like 8 years (not necessarily consecutive) and or academy graduates, perhaps limited to half of the games per season if the exemption is used. I think for some players it would help with a transition to non-playing life.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Wade visiting

On Twitter it looks like Wade made a surprise visit to Pudsey. I wonder who else he has met whilst over...

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Jackal Penalties
« on: June 06, 2021, 03:52:21 PM »
Just watched Courtney Lawes win a jackal after having his hands on the floor, actually looked off balance. We have been pinged quite regularly for slight touches of the ground, Dog recently getting pinged for touching the ground has he scooped up the ball in particular sticks in my mind.

I don't agree with the interpretation of touching the floor with a hand automatically assumes you are off balance, I wonder if it has been changed?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Knock on
« on: March 01, 2021, 11:38:39 AM »
Smales said something like "It was off his knee" when asked if the ball had been knocked on when fumbled by London Irish at the weekend. I don't claim to be an expert, but I am pretty sure the knee cannot be used to 'kick'?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Worth a listen
« on: November 11, 2020, 05:32:54 PM »
Hi, just listened to Rob Baxter on The Rugby Dungeon pod cast. He is very generous with his answers where others would be more guarded. Found it very interesting and lots of insights that are probably useful for more than just rugby.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Saturday weather

Heavy rain
14mph wind gusting 30mph
15C

Personally I would prefer it to the scorching sun the last time they were there. Just hope our scrum goes ok

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Latching in the 22
« on: October 16, 2020, 04:42:42 PM »
I hadn't realised before hearing Ugo Monye in the Rugby Union Weekly pod that if you latch onto the ball carrier in the opposition 22 and are then tackled, the latched player  can seal off the ball. I had always thought that latched players had to roll away. Seems like an odd rule to me.

Noticed a few comments about Dan's quick take, suggesting it was poor officiating. Not seen anyone point out that if Bristol had got on with playing the game rather than questioning the decision then they would have been in a better position to defend. Nothing in the laws says you must wait until the opposition has finished arguing with the referee.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Sale v Harlequins
« on: September 22, 2020, 07:59:36 AM »
That was entertaining, an enjoyable mid week rugby fix that I felt more interested in than the European games. They both really wanted it, but at times each did their best to give it away.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Smithy
« on: September 03, 2020, 10:46:23 AM »
Just been listening to Jack on the Rugby Union weekly. Very interesting and he came across very well.

By the way, he doesn't half remind me of James Cordon, so in my mind I call him Smithy, well it's better than Dobby!
