Wasps Rugby Discussion / Kent!
« on: October 23, 2023, 04:04:30 PM »
https://wasps.co.uk/club-announcements/wasps-announces-plans-for-new-stadium-development-in-kent/

The club is actively engaged with Sevenoaks District Council to identify a suitable location and ensure that the development meets both the needs of the club and the broader community.

Building on the rich 156-year history of Wasps, this move signifies a new chapter in the club's journey, reaffirming its commitment to professional rugby. In a statement on 17 October the club discussed its strategic journey since October 2022. Having faced significant challenges with regulation and funding, the club has persisted with its determination to revive Wasps at the highest possible level.

As the development progresses through its planning stages, Wasps will be actively exploring temporary facilities to underpin its operations in Kent. Whilst determined to establish a base in the southeast of England, the club has also agreed an option of utilising Worcester Warriors? Sixways ground for both training and playing purposes, without in anyway replacing Worcester Warriors RFC and indeed committed to assisting their return to competitive rugby.

A Wasps spokesperson said: "The journey of Wasps has been one of passion, resilience, and commitment to the game. Our determination to secure a new, sustainable future for the club has never been stronger. By working with Sevenoaks District Council, we hope to build a long-lasting legacy that acknowledges our storied past and charts an ambitious future.

As a Cov Wasps fan, that's a hell of a trek for "home games"!

Wasps Rugby Discussion / OT - Racism in rugby
« on: December 22, 2022, 09:17:17 AM »
Fuming this morning.

Read this article, and seen more on twitter now about it too: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/64058150

This is incredible. Disgusting. Also, this is a club which has Marcus Watson and Jacob Umaga among the playing staff; peers of Cherif Traore the victim in this "prank". I can't believe this is a thing in 2022 Europe.

That said, of course I can, and it is. Racism continues across society and sport (see Azeem Rafiq and Yorkshire CC for a close-to-home example).

There was an interview with Paolo Odogwu a while back I think, where he said something along the lines of: "we all have these 'Rugby against Racism' patches on our sleeves, but no-one's actually doing anything". If I've misquoted him then I apologise, but that was the gist.

I don't want to get all BLM and 'take the knee', but the fact this is still happening... FFS.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / RPA interview with Ben Harris
« on: December 20, 2022, 01:47:13 PM »
On the RPA site:

https://therpa.co.uk/news/2022/12/ben-harris-interview-life-after-wasps/

IN THE NEXT OF OUR SERIES OF INTERVIEWS WITH FORMER WASPS AND WORCESTER PLAYERS, WE'VE SPOKEN TO FORMER WASPS PROP BEN HARRIS ABOUT HOW HE HAS FOUND THE LAST FEW MONTHS..

What has the last few months been like for you emotionally?

Yeah, it’s been pretty tough. I'm lucky because I've got a few things going on outside of rugby, but it’s been tough because I'm still injured as well. So, I’m trying to get there with the rehab, I’m struggling with my hamstring as well. But if you sit here and cry about it, it’s not going to get you anywhere, is it?

Ideally, I'd like to be pain free when I’m walking around the house, never mind playing professional sport, but it is what it is.

How has your family been at this time?

It has been difficult. This situation of course bothers me, there are certain bits I’m really angry about, and there are things I can’t control, so I don’t let it affect anything else out of rugby because it's absolutely pointless.

I can’t make the club run the business correctly, I can’t ask them why they decided to do this four or five games into a Premiership season rather than doing it in the pre-season, they must have known this was coming, smart business-people would know that.

The club have signed people from all over the world, who have brought their families over to come and represent this unbelievable club and now they’ve not got a job. I’ve got stuff going on, but trust me, I wish I was still playing rugby. I wish I was fit and healthy, unfortunately, I'm not and the RPA/Restart are helping me pay for that and see surgeons as I’m struggling.

Of course, it’s impacted my family life, but I’ve just cracked on. I’ve not expected anyone to do anything for me, I’ve got out there and networked, and worked closely with my Development Manager, Luke Cheyne, and we’ve been out to a lot of businesses, and I’m pretty set up. Once I’m back fit and raring to go hopefully rugby is still there for me, but if not, I’m not going to waste an opportunity to go out and meet people and so on and so forth.

Talk to us about that moment you were told you were being made redundant, what was it like?

It was like it wasn’t real. I thought there had got to be a ‘but’ coming like you’re going to drop this news on us, but there’s going to be a buyer and you’ll be able to be reinstated on the same contract, you’ll be playing in the Championship next year, that’s what everyone was led to believe.

We were made aware on the Wednesday we would probably have to go into administration because there’s not been a buyer for the club, so we’d have to regroup, go into the Championship, we’ll build our way back up.

We got a message on the Saturday, about the meeting on Monday at 1pm. Everyone was not a bit jokey, but a bit relaxed about it thinking they were just going to confirm we were going into administration. There were three or four people who we didn’t recognise who were the administrators who led the meeting who said: “As of 12:40pm today, Wasps Holdings were under administration and as of now I’m here to make you aware that you are all redundant.”

That was his opening line – and it must have been tough for him to deliver. It was the first bit of honesty we’ve had in a few months.

It was just a shock and you’re looking around the room and look at legends of the clubs, Joe Launchbury, Dan Robson, the Willis brothers, they were all so upset. Seeing legends of the club and game just in absolute floods of tears around you, and you’re having to console them. It’s not a nice feeling and it’ll probably stay with me for a long period of time.

How important has the RPA and your Development Manager been for you at this time?

Luke is probably one of the best guys that I’ve ever met, he really is a top bloke. He is fantastic at his job, I can only speak about what he did for me (but I’m assuming it’ll be the same at other clubs he’s been at), but he’s a brilliant enthusiastic bloke who cares. He doesn’t beat around the bush, if he says he’s going to do something he’ll do it for you, and he’s always there for you if you need it.

He’s been our outlet if we ever needed it, and then alongside Ben Morris who was our Player Representative for the RPA, he was fantastic. If he didn’t know anything, he’d find out within five minutes and tell us where to go/what to do etc.

We never felt like we were on our own, I thought the RPA, Luke and Ben were fantastic.

Restart has helped you when it comes to fronting some medical bills, can you explain that for us…

I tore my hamstring off the bone. That was six and a half months ago, and I should be back training 100%, feeling fit, no pain whatsoever but I’m still struggling with it. So, Restart have again been brilliant. I applied for it, and they paid for me to see the surgeon who has requested scans and injections.

It’s just nice to know that they are there for you. It's something you do really take for granted as a professional sportsman the medical care of things. If you need a scan, you’re having a scan in the afternoon whereas most people have to wait six months for it so we're very lucky to have that care and attention paid for by Restart. It’s a massive help for me and anybody else that needs it.

What’s next for you then Ben?

I want to get back fit and play again. But there's also things in the pipeline. I'm a qualified electrician to start off with. Luke put me in contact with one of the Business Club members of the RPA, MPH Sports, and I’m set to deliver several workshops around the country, speaking about properties and how the income I’ve earned from them has helped me over this time. I've got a little gym in Leamington and coaching is one of my big passions as well.

The popular ex-Wasp is named in the Samoa squad for their NH tour this Autumn, facing Italy, Georgia and Romania.

Obviously a NZ cap previously, he is a "new cap" for Samoa. Stephen Luatua also named as a "new cap" too.

Lining up alongside the lines of Theo McFarland, Chris Vui and Alapati Leiua they could be a good side come RWC2023.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Article - Who are the real Wasps?
« on: September 08, 2022, 09:02:11 AM »
From today's Telegraph:

Wasps

Who are the real Wasps?

Inconsistent also-rans or enigmatic challengers? This question, no doubt, will be posed to the players by Lee Blackett himself. It has been a fraught summer and recruitment plans were put on hold due to financial uncertainty. Even so, Blackett picked up some gems.

Vincent Koch and John Ryan were captured as tighthead prop was targeted for improvement, which made sense given Wasps only won 85.5 per cent of their scrum put-ins last Premiership season.

Only Bath and London Irish were lower. Sticking with the Exiles, a 42-42 draw on May 1 in Brentford, immortalised as the afternoon on which Henry Arundell convinced Eddie Jones, encapsulated Wasps’ fragility. They had been leading 39-14 with 20 minutes left.

A great deal depends on senior statesmen like Joe Launchbury staying fit and a group of youngsters – Charlie Atkinson, Alfie Barbeary, Jacob Umaga and Jack and Tom Willis – continuing to progress. Sam Spink, a sturdy outside centre, can establish himself as well. Meanwhile, there will be a toss-up for the 12 shirt. Burger Odendaal, another new signing, is the direct option with 30-year-old Ryan Mills, disrupted by injuries for so long, more of a second distributor.

Player to watch
John Ryan: Released by Munster just before Christmas, Ryan turned 34 last month and won the last of his Ireland caps against Japan in July of 2021. Still, he could be one half of a fearsome double-act with one of Biyi Alo or Vincent Koch, when the latter returns from Springboks duty, that would shore up a problem area and lay a sturdy scrummaging platform for Wasps.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / International Allegiance - Kerr-Barlow
« on: August 24, 2022, 10:37:59 AM »
Not strictly Wasps related, although with Mala and Vaea Fifita having swapped allegiance relatively recently there's a link.

New Zealand RWC winning scrum-half Tawera Kerr-Barlow has announced his availability and desire to represent Australia in the '23 RWC. He's 32, and hasn't played for NZ since 2017. Born in Australia, so eligible for them now.

This is the first major Tier 1 -> Tier 1 switch and raises the possibility that a player could win the RWC for two nations...

Unintended consequences of the re-nationalisation rules being less stringent than originally proposed, I think! The original proposal was for only T1 -> T2 nations, to help rebuild the PI nations international sides - the likes of Charles Piutau and Mala representing the country of their heritage.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Wasps spending profile
« on: August 23, 2022, 08:27:30 AM »
Snippet of article from the Telegraph around how clubs are managing their spending profiles. The full article (the second half - the first half of the clubs, alphabetically, was published yesterday) is here: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/rugby-union/2022/08/23/premiership-salary-cap-special-report-part-two-clubs-squad-building

Wasps
Possible excluded player: Joe Launchbury

In a summer that saw a swathe of established professionals released from their clubs, the situation at Wasps was particularly tough. James Gaskell, Rob Miller and Marcus Watson were among those to leave. Watson, now of Benetton, and Gaskell, joining Shokki Shuttles in Japan, have had their onward destinations announced.

Lee Blackett conceded that he could not compete with the price that Scarlets tabled for Vaea Fifita, citing “the way of the Premiership at the moment”. Thomas Young has also moved to Wales, with Cardiff, while Malakai Fekitoa and Jeffery Toomaga-Allen opted for Munster and Ulster, respectively.

Blackett is admirably open. He admitted that financial uncertainty was also the reason for Jimmy Gopperth’s departure. After discussions in December, Wasps explained that they needed a couple more months to determine whether they could table another offer. In the interim, Leicester Tigers pounced.

It is not all doom at gloom, though. Tighthead prop was clearly targeted for recruitment, and Wasps acquired John Ryan in January after the 24-cap Ireland international was released by Munster. A month prior to that, it was confirmed that the club also lured Vincent Koch away from Saracens with what must have been a significant offer.

Other arrivals include Burger Odendaal, a flinty centre from South Africa who will have come markedly cheaper than Fekitoa, and former Glasgow Warriors lock Kiran McDonald. Immanuel Feyi-Waboso is an intriguing addition to the back division, too.

Will Haydon-Wood, fresh from establishing himself at Newcastle, joins a squad that is high on homegrown talent from Tom West to Sam Spink via Charlie Atkinson and Jack Willis. Blackett has used his contacts in the Championship to find players such as Elliot Millar-Mills, the ex-Ealing Trailfinders prop, and former London Scottish lock Theo Vukasinovic.

Joe Launchbury, the club captain, is likely to be the excluded player – if one of those is required – with Brad Shields and Francois Hougaard among the highest earners. Amid some financial troubles with regard to HMRC and their stadium, though, there are important renewals to land. Alfie Barbeary, Dan Robson and Tom Willis are all thought to be out of contract next year.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Talking points with Lee

Sounds encouraging. Serious ambitions to be a "skilful" team, and to build on the Wasps core.

Attack let us down last season, big work-on, and sounds like we want serious grunt up front.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Squad 22/23
« on: August 16, 2022, 09:40:41 AM »
So bit of a change from the pitch / finances discussion... this is what the squad looks like for this season, I think. See if I've missed anyone, and then it's a "first game XXIII" selection game!

1. West, Harris, Martinez, Hislop
2. Cruse, Frost, Oghre, (Van Vuuren)?
3. Koch, Alo, Millar-Mills, Ryan
4. Launch, McDonald, Dodson (injury cover)
5. Stooke (inj.), Cardall, Theo
6. Shields, Nemo
7. JW, Morris
8. TW, Alfie, Curran

9.  Dobby, Porter, Wusty, Hougaard (okay, he's a winger too :) )
10. Umaga (inj.), Atkinson, Haydon-Wood
11. Bertie, Mehson
12. Burger, Mills, Hartley
13. Spink, Simonds
14. Kibirige, Paolo
15. Crossdale, Minozzi

Anyone I've missed? We still look light at centre for me (lot of reliance on Mills not being made of glass this time around) and despite the cover at lock it's still a concern until ES is fit.
