Wasps Rugby Discussion / Red Cards
« on: March 13, 2022, 11:48:16 AM »
I’m going to play devils advocate here but does anyone else think that the prevalence of red cards for high tackles is making a mockery of the game at present. Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally in favour of doing everything possible to make the game safer but not at the expense of rugby being an entertaining sport. One player goes into a tackle with poor technique and his entire team is penalised by being reduced to 14 and 9 times out of 10 lose the march as a result.

What doesn’t rest easy with me is that if you lose your rag and deliberately and with considerable malice punch an opponent you get exactly the same sanction as going into a tackle standing upright. Don’t forget that an “upright” or choke tackle is a legitimate technique to create a maul and earn a turnover.

Just an idea but how about some sort of “Orange” card? The guilty player is sent off permanently but the team can bring on a replacement after 10 minutes so it’s a halfway house between a red and yellow. The guilty player is left understanding that he has to improve his technique and the team is weakened by losing a first choice player and being reduced to 14 for 10 minutes but it is far less likely to dictate the result.

Thoughts?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Defensive Alignment
« on: January 12, 2021, 03:16:30 PM »
Lima has been on the end of some justifiable criticism for his defending recently so watching Fridays match back I was curious to know where he was when Redpath scored. He put in that lame clearance kick that gave Bath possession around 30m out then seemed to disappear. If you watch the build-up, Umaga drops back to the full back position. I wondered if we were adopting a sort of "twin sweeper" formation to give us a little more strength should our front line defence get breached but Jacob is clearly in front of the posts rather than guarding half of the pitch, when Redpath makes his sweeping run over to the right, Jacob has to come across at such an angle it was always going to be easy to step him. Lima is over on our right, he appears in some of the views of the try but it looks like he was much too far over giving Jacob too much space to guard.

Is that a defensive formation we've used before that I've not noticed? Or is it just a recent reaction to some of Limas lame last-ditch tackling? Jacob is certainly very reliably defensively (lets ignore his rush out of the line for Baths first try that contributed to the massive overlap), his tackling in particular is excellent.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Will Rowland's departure a done deal?
« on: December 29, 2020, 03:08:02 PM »
Just wondering- in hope more than expectation- if Will's move to Wales has been confirmed rather than a widely circulated rumour?

It's just been reported that Welsh Lock Jake Ball is to retire from International rugby to spend more time with his family in Australia. With A.W. Jones not getting any younger, Wayne Pivac is going to be desperate for quality second row players, can't help wondering if the "balance of power" has shifted. It's all very well for the Welsh RFU to insist on players playing their rugby in Wales if they want to represent the country, but that only works if the nation is successful which they very much were under Gatland. Not so much now. If the best Welsh qualified locks decide not to play in Wales, can Pivac really afford not to pick them? Could we see the so-called Gatland's law quietly abandoned? Or perhaps "modified" to 10 caps rather than 60 before you can play elsewhere. On present form, Wales will be fighting it out for the Six Nations wooden spoon with Italy and that's with their first choice locks.

Will has now played against the Dragons- where I believe it is rumoured he is heading- and experienced Rodney Parade. It may have history but- no offence to The Dragons- the Ricoh Arena it is not. He may be Welsh qualified but he is also an Englishman who'd be playing in Wales with all the "banter" that will entail (For "banter" read hostility). He's also presently playing exciting rugby for the team who finished second in the Premiership last season, the Dragons rarely bother the top of the Pro14, would he really want to go there?

As I say, this is not based on anything concrete, just looking at how things stand and hope that Will is going to reconsider leaving and hold his nerve for the Welsh RFU to realise that they need him more than he needs them.
