Wasps Rugby Discussion / So how far away are we?
« on: November 17, 2019, 02:02:08 PM »
We're a few games in now and we have a solitary win. I'm an eternal optimist but so far I'd class it as Irish - disappointing but we should have won. Glaws - well beaten. Bath - much needed win. Sale - more encouraging and we could have won. Bordeaux - encouraging and we could have got something. So personally I think we're fine margins away. Better discipline, better game management in the final stages and just a bit more precision in the red zone and I think we'll be winning games. Personnel wise our front row looks solid with Owlett and McIntyre now options. JL back at SR with an improved looking WR. Back row options are great with JW outstanding and Vailanu an emerging bonus. LS has looked better and JG is back at 12. Minozzi has looked lively and our wing options are better. I'd still like to see more from Fekitoa. So I don't think we're far away but that's just theory and points on the board are the absolute measure. Do others think we're as close to getting them as I do?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Englands new tight head?
« on: November 16, 2019, 02:27:55 PM »
Having seen him a few times this season it seems to me it's only a matter of time before Will Stuart gets a call from Eddie. Amongst the more high profile (and some welcomed) departures last season I class him leaving as the biggest loss of all.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Mind the gap
« on: November 12, 2019, 10:57:12 PM »
Reflecting on an issue that has struck me looking through our first four squads I'm starting to think the era of Championship players migrating to the Premiership may be coming to an end. Foreign imports, recycling other prem players and academy products seem to have put an end to the possibility of coming up through the leagues. Looking at Wasps specifically last year we recruited Neal, Morris, Atkinson and Le Bourgeois. I don't think we could say any have broken through. We then had the Mike Daniels scenario and this year we're already seeing Vukasinovic slip down the order with Alo not featuring either. Is the gap between the leagues now to big to bridge?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Irish v Tigers
« on: November 10, 2019, 04:49:27 PM »
Irish looked pretty impressive today. That's a decent amount of points they've put on Tigers. The Prem this year really is going to be a quagmire.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Scrum Time.
« on: October 22, 2019, 09:39:01 PM »
This may well have been discussed before but one of the biggest blights on the game at the moment for me is time lost to re-set scrums. On Sunday a conservative estimate in my opinion would be 10 minutes lost. That's a huge chunk of time. Rugby is a long way ahead of most other sports in terms of common sense laws and use of technology. The answer to this is surely stunningly simple - stop the clock until the front rows engage.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Loss to Irish.
« on: October 20, 2019, 07:31:36 PM »
Doesn't seem to be a thread exclusively for this. Just back and overwhelming emotion is real disappointment. We looked lateral and inventiveless in attack. I'd like to know if someone is instructing Sopoaga to play so deep. Kibirige finished well but defensively we have a real issue on his flank. When we camped on their line in the second half the ball was terribly slow and we just employed the "if you miss a tackle we'll score" approach. With such slow ball they weren't going to miss tackles. We have issues (longstanding, not just today) at second row and 12 which are hurting us. We really need Gopperth back. A courple of really odd decisions were worrying 1) To kick for three with 7 minutes left invited them back into our half and then 2) When we won an attacking line out with nothing on the clock we threw to the front when they were never going to contest, making it easy for them to pile in at the front. To try and find positives Willis was different class and our scrum was ok.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Cashless areas
« on: October 18, 2019, 05:15:05 PM »
Just seeing that four areas (Mill, Bakery, Clubhouse, Hospitality) will all be cashless on Sunday. Does this irritate anyone else as much as it does me. I'll be taking cash and spending it wherever takes it. I'm sure I've heard the whole arena will move to cashless soon.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Starting forwards
« on: August 03, 2019, 11:16:16 AM »
We've had a go at selecting our starting back division but what about the forwards. Accepting that front row in particular it's a matchday squad scenario my starting eight would be;
Zhvania
Taylor
Brookes
Launchbury
Gaskell
Shields
Carr
Young

6 is a real toss up between Willis and Shields and I'm excited to see more of T Willis at 8.
